There were valves to flood the tube with water and equalize it's pressure with the exterior water before the outer door could be opened. Also, valves and an internal tank to dump a tube full of water into to empty the tube and allow for reloading while submerged.

@paulfarace95955 ай бұрын
Depth pressure is the only real issue. Forward momentum for a fleet sub is at best 9 knots and doesn't pise an additional amount of stress.

Great video, Paul. Great conclusion on how the fish were loaded aboard the sub. BZ to Evan for crawling the length of the tube, both fore and aft. It seems the manual system would be a liability in a combat situation, especially if a destroyer is coming right down your throat. Two questions, Paul. How was the water drained from the tube after firing? What was the maximum depth from which a torpedo could be fired? I know that some were fired using sound bearings while below periscope death. Designed in the late 30's so was likely considered an unnecessary extravagance for a boat that was supposed to be very deliberate in its sneak attacks that were in support of a nearby fleet. Had they known that it would literally be a boat alone against heavily escorted small convoys and the rapid pace of the action it entails they likely would have taken the extra effort. There is also the additional load and complexity on the hydraulic plants to consider. Given that the torpedoes were prone to flooding if left in a flooded tube for too long, it's amazing that they were able to wait as long as they did to open the doors and still have them ready.

@@paulfarace9595 with 600psi per tube, and with 4 fish being discharged at one time that's 2400 psi, is pressure being compressed at that time or is there a high capacity pressure tank and what is the max pressure capacity of that tank? are the compressors always electrically operated or when surfaced do the engines run the compressors? since compressed air is also used to surface how much air pressure is need for a boat to surface.

If the torpedo is fired by compressed air then when you open the tube how does the air stay inside?
@exsubmariner5 ай бұрын
When the torpedo tube is loaded with a weapon ready to fire first you had to flood the tube with sea water once the pressure is equalised you open the bow cap. the tubes is fired by an air reservoir pushing compressed air into an operating tank filled with sea water. this inturn pushes sea water into the rear end of the torpedo tube at 2500 PSI which pushes the torpedo out of the tube . This water RAM system prevents bubbles from reaching the surface The bowcap is then shut and the torpedo tube is drained down when empty the rear door can be then opened to reload
