Inside a wearable ozone meter with alarm.

This fairly expensive unit is designed to monitor ambient ozone levels and sound an alarm and vibrate if they exceed a preset threshold. I'd guess it is intended for factories where ozone is used in processing.
Inside is a fairly standard sensor, possibly based on tin oxide technology, that changes resistance according to ozone level. The case has clearly been repurposed from one designed for up to four separate round sensors. That means the sensor is mounted well inside which slows down the units response significantly unless a flow of air is directed at it.
This unit came from eBay. I was hoping it would have greater sensitivity and resolution at the lower levels for ambient testing, but it seems more suited to detecting higher levels.

The CCS811 VOC gas sensor I've used in a project has a similar 48 hour burn-in period and takes 20 minutes to run-in (stabilise) after each power up. The datasheet for the CCS811 describes it a metal oxide gas sensor and it has a built in heater and needs to be provided with temperature and humidity readings to calculate estimated VOC or CO2 levels.

Hey Clive, it may be you were right on the money with air sanitation. Even more then you thought. Some latest research suggest either a good ventilation system or where it's not possible or have somewhat of a closed system, filtering and sanitation, are far more effective then everything else (social distancing, masks, hand washing etc.) combined. It's all about air and you'd need biolab grade masks to make any difference. Schools are opening up here and there are special teams set up to check and help with the ventilation. All well and good, however in fall and winter students would sit in cold classrooms. (likewise restaurants, theatres, gyms and so on). Having an air purifying system could be very helpful.

The methane sensors work exceptionally well in his capacity. I had a cast off meter from a national lab that was a gas sensor ( www.apollounion.com/en/p-Combustible-gas-sensor-TGS813-182.html ) hooked to a 555. You would turn it on and let it warm up and then adjust a pitch control to essentially set the detection range. You would adjust it for a click----click---click output in clean air and then when held by a farter, the pitch would rise to a couple thousand Hz. Even a couple minutes after the "event" the unit would scream when the sensor was held up against the guilty pants.

Common (cheap) silicone sealants/adhesives emit ethanoic acid (aka acetic acid, aka vinegar) when they cure. Not good for sensitive components. Or even non-sensitive components if they have fine leads. Silicone polishes and lubricants creep everywhere (almost like superfluid helium). It poses a problem if it creeps its way onto relay contacts, where the arc as the contact opens turns it into insulating crud. Used to be a standard problem in photocopiers. People polished the glass and many months later it worked its way onto relay contacts. Not a problem with mil-spec relays in hermetically-sealed metal cans, but ordinary relays have big problems.

Fun aside for a moment: This level of construction is appalling, considering it's on the open market and for sale. A ten-year-old child could do better (a lot better). I've stopped products vastly better than this - simply because the cost of doing it properly and obtaining compliance outweighed the product's financial value. If you get this wrong - you can be taken to court! We need to stop buying this rubbish, pay a little bit more, make it in our own countries and to some meaningful quality. Also, there needs to be some form of open compliance so that products of value can be brought to market without us spending 10s of thousands. It's plainly obvious listening to you Clive and these comments that we have the talent and it's shameful our hands are tied behind our backs - while others get away with it. Where can I buy a real ozone generator from? As well as a real safe UV lamp 🔦 please thanks

Buy a ozone generator for cpap cleaning. You can find them on Amazon, and for UV, buy one that's a Florent tube. Then do the banana test.

1:40 Sorry, but using a PP, PE or PVC as a filter cap is wonderful filter on O3 and reduces it efficiently to O2. The only innert material is PTFE for this purpose. Also the scaling in ppm is a joke. A typical hot summer will not exceed 250ppb = 0.25ppm on average. 3:26 Strong doubts that this little device creates +4 ppm. The egg or cigar like 12V car plug (7€) can barely create 2ppm. The cheap 220V (600mg/h advertise ~30€) can create about 25ppm for a short time (
