The Britannia Hotel Manchester is one of the worst rated hotels in the city and maybe even the UK with some of the worst reviews on Tripadvisor. I stay a night in this hotel for a mini city break/holiday to see what its like and explore the inside of the hotel.
Is it really as bad as the reviews suggest? Find out in this video

I think I've stayed in worse hotels in M'cr during summer exam lol 😂 of course I think by now those buildings may have been demolished already - near Old Quarter, during my Uni years there, that area was really ran down (much cheaper than Britannia, I can't complain - student life)

The southern part of the city centre is dominated by grand warehouses, almost all of which have been redeveloped into other uses. Portland Street is home to a number of them and in almost every case they have been turned into hotels. This warehouse was built between 1851 and 1856 by Travis & Magnell at a cost of £100,000. It is made of sandstone and had 5 floors, each built in a different architectural style. Today it is the Britannia Hotel,, it still has its original, spectacular staircase and in the entrance it has the Watts and Company War Memorial.

Thanks for vid was thinking of booking a coach holiday which is staying here seen other worrying videos with much worse rooms. You got a better room because maybe you're walking round wi a camera? Btw beautiful tapestries on walls and breakfast triangle hings was tattie scones (Scottish potato scones)

When you first went in it was very impressive, the room not so much but what do you want for the money. I didn't think the breakfast looked bad, I thought the bacon looked nice. You could have gone back for more if you were still hungry or had some cereal.

Honestly don't see how you can complain if you're staying in Manchester for £37. I've stayed well outside the city centre for more than that. At that price I think the only dealbreakers are 1. bedbugs 2. uncleaned bathroom and 3. a bed that has clearly not had clean sheets on it. Don't think any of those things apply here. As for Britannia, I've said this before on another channel, but they provide a budget travel experience while keeping some of our oldest, grandest hotels. If they weren't around these beautiful buildings would either be demolished or else have their soul ripped out and turned into featureless sterile boxes inside. I think that would be sad. I'm not saying Britannia don't have their faults (their owner and CEO doesn't pay tax in the UK, which is a really big issue), but I think they do okay for what they charge. Enjoyed this thanks.

I wish they’d slowly renovate and up the price of their hotels. They could be incredible boutique hotels with grand ballrooms in many instances. Although location for some is an issue as they lean towards single night business or coach travel stays. For the price you can’t complain but now I’d usually choose to pay £100plus for somewhere more cared for and modern.

A bargain, for the price! For people who value the aesthetic grandeur (if not somewhat faded, in certain areas) of the original ART DECO fixtures and fittings. At the low prices Britannia charge, it's no wonder refurbishing those lovely, original architectural features is overdue, in places! - As long as the room is basically clean (as it was), I would happily stay there. Why not try the Prince Of Wales (still with it's Grand Ballroom) in Southport? or The Adelphi (full of architectural gems!) in Liverpool? One can 'feel' the history, all around.

That's not bad value mate , you can get cheaper down south but it will be some soleless Travelodge devoid of any character with exactly the same hygiene issues. The potato bread was more than likely a tattie scone or potato cake as we call them here in the north , at a tenner I'd have gone back for a second helping 🤣 All the very best for the New Year 👍

Britannia hotels highlight bad chain management. Always give the impression that owners skim everything possible as dividends while not investing in rooms, staff or infrastructure. Really sad because many of the buildings are architectural gems and clearly grand hotels of their day.

As for the noisy room? You could have gone to reception and explained you wanted to get a quieter one. The problem with these magnificent old buildings is that you either need really deep pockets or a way to increase profits. Like function rooms, grand venue rooms for weddings etc. I think the overheads were a drain on this lovely old building. I imagine getting that chandelier cleaned isn’t cheap. I didn’t notice an open restaurant either. I felt the breakfast was a little lacking in quality. However I imagine that back in it’s day this would have been THE place to stay. But sadly Premier Inns and Travel lodge type hotels ruined the need for grander places to stay.

two little milks enough for one cup. the picture on the wall is in a stupid place. the massive draft then means noise can come in too. the room is very dark must be so you can not see the marks etc in the room. really for the room and place the breakfast should be included. think I would rather go to a place that offers more for £10. with the noise you have to put up with.

Outstanding Hotel for the price. Upkeep cost must be expensive. Breakfast looked good value if you had gone back for seconds & it saved you going out looking for a cafe which would not have been "All you can eat". Looked quiet. Was it after Christmas ? I would stop there & ignore reviews. People who leave bad reviews usually have a chip on their shoulder and are blind to the good points of a place.

Interesting balanced and fair review. It was obviously a grand hotel many years ago, now it’s in technical terms a “dump”, but it was cheap so I suppose for a central location in a big city it represents “value for money”. Personally I would have taken a look at Tripadvisor reviews before booking and very probably not even considered it, the last time I spent a couple of nights in Manchester, indeed the only time, I paid around £100 per night and that was perhaps 20 years ago and frankly it wasn’t that great even then (one of the big well-known hotel chains). Looks to me as if the overall assessment of this place in most reviews is accurate, but I admire you for venturing there 😉.
