Do you have any details about the light sensor component? I am wanting to modify it so that the LEDs are always on full brightness and do no dim. If I could find a datasheet on the device it would help.

So basically.. The amazon dot is NOT a SBC that runs an OS such as Linux?

I've found that board mounted USB ports creates a failure point in that when a cable is plugged in and gets bumped it has the risk of breaking that solder connection. Is there a way to "ruggedize" board mounted ports to avoid this, or is a jumper with panel mount the best if this is a concern?

Yes, I'd suggest you use a connector with mounting holes. Also sometimes using a through-hole connector instead of SMT can help a lot.
