theres no bookstores where i live, only libraries. if i want to go to a bookstore, the closest is Barnes and Noble and its almost an hour away. ive only been there once. Not worth the trip for me, i just buy my books online or go to the library. i would love to go to an indie bookstore though.

I’m on the precipice of buying a bookstore in my small northern Washington town. There are days when I question what the hell I’m making this major, life changing decision for. I have a good paying job and a lot of flexibility, but there’s something that just keeps calling me to this place. This affirmed (for today) that I’m making the right decision moving forward. Maybe someday you can come shoot one of these for me. Thank you for this 🙏🏻

This is amazing! ❤️ I love independent bookstores! To be honest, I don't shop in them enough since I work in a chain bookshop (even thou our shops are pretty small compared to others and some of them feel kind of homey and all that connects them is the name) and this is a great reminder for me to try harder and support them (and not to just pay money to my employer 😂)

This is so lovely, Ariel! Independent shops (and sometimes even previously independent and now belonging-to-a-chain shops) are so integral to many communities, and secondhand bookshops are such great refuges from a busy life (or just the rain). Putting a spotlight on them is a wonderful way to support them.

This is great! I think something a lot of people don't imagine about smaller/privately owned stores is the struggle to keep them alive and running well. I grew up in a summer town where I worked at smaller businesses and it was hard to not see the business owners struggle. They have so much of their own personal money and time invested that the employees can easily become invested, too. It's a great vibe, if not a bit stressful. And I totally agree with what she says about having your hands in a lot of pies. Even bigger stores have to do this now (ex: Barnes & Noble); toys, journals, accessories - it's hard not to dive into these markets when big names like Amazon are out here selling EVERYTHING you could imagine.

I hope you're able to come down to visit Victoria some time! It has the largest used bookstore in Canada, and in general a really strong local bookstore presence. Once a year, there's a giant book sale where people line up around the block and camp out the night before to get a good place in line!
