I got this 150 point fibre (fiber) optic lighting kit from eBay to check out the quality. It seems quite a nice design.

A very long unskippable ad for an ebay optic fibre kit was played for me here in Australia. I ended up watching the whole ad because it was interesting.

A tip: For a wider viewing angle. Instead of using those caps that you were talking about, you can melt all of the the ends with a lighter and they form little beads at the tips. Discovered this by accident.

I actually bought the same kit recently (in 300 point and with a motor that provides "twinkle"). I used it to enhance a high-quality space-themed canvas print. Worked quite well, and the remote control enables a decent enough amount of customisation

Didn't know this was available. You can carefully drill out that gland-nut connector and put at least twice as many fibers into it; although I'd think that more lamps would give you more choices of colors and colors can be mixed by combining fibers into different openings. Thanks, Clive for such a great idea!

I bought an expensive LED controller. Expensive for my budget. Around 20 dollars but it is a big money in my country. I accidentally unpaired my controller. Then I was browsing your videos came along this wondered what it is. Started watching saw the same remote and I knew that you were showing how to pair stuff. It worked. Big thanks to you man! I love your videos!

51 steps per color are completely logical. THe controller uses a three byte RGB color value (#000000 to #FFFFFF) each byte (#00 to #FF) contains the value for each of the colored LED. so you get brightness values for each color from 00 to #FF what actually are 255 (decimal). for ease of youse the controller increments and decrements these values by 5 for each button press, so you get 51 steps for each color (51 by 5 equals 255 equals #FF).

I love to say that i have been a fan for awhile and thought I'm not the smartest nor do i know much of what the specific components do, i myself always found myself to tinker and disassemble things just for the fact that I'm bored and want to see how something works and I just love moments like "Is this glued in? Oh... well it was, just need to fix that in a second." Idk its just the small jokes you make and the random things that happen keep bringing me back, plus as i said I love to take things apart.

My tablet just decided to take me on a little involuntary tour of the links on your page, deleting my totally completed comment that I was proofing at the time. The up side of that is that I have now started this video 3 times. Each with another ad, of course. The first time was just the ad you can skip, which I did as usual at 4.9 seconds. The second and third were the same with the addition of a pop-up on the third. The second may or may not have had a pop-up, I wasn't on the page long enough before my tablet's delayed response fit bounced me back off.Thank you for all your awesome videos. You have been a major motivator for me to get back into electronics. It's a great time to have such a hobby, when I was younger there was not such a wealth of free information available as there is today. Plus everyone is throwing out tons of great salvageable electronics nowadays. Half the time I plug the stuff in and it still works just fine. Then I usually take it to bits anyway. Thank you for that.

The reason to cut the fibre (fibre cleaving) is to make sure the fibre end is a clean, flat surface so to allow the most light to go through. Being a fibre light show and not 5Km of data transmission, its not too important.

Tim Morgan they have been doing ads over here too but it honestly doesn't change anything for us. Both visa and MasterCard provide apps that can use the NFC and have done so for a few years now. That was about the time they both pushed to get paypass and paywave to become standard so now most places have NFC eftpos machines. Did the UK have a similar thing to us? I am in Australia by the way.

We've had Apple pay and contactless debit/credit cards in the UK for over a year now. I've literally only ever seen the Android Pay logo on a shop once lol, though I'd imagine android pay would work where ever apple pay and contactless works as its just NFC? I have a contactless card but my bank hasn't setup with android pay yet. Though depending how easy it is to use I'd probably just stick to card. Pull my wallet out and tap it on the machine without even opening it... be useless if I have to actually unlock my phone or open an app etc.

Those old high quality fiber optic balls lost their novelty and no one wanted to pay $300 for them any more. Also they didn't last forever, the fibers continually tangle and clump together from the rotation, the light burns out, the motor strips, and the color gels fade from the heat. I scored one long after they disappeared by asking a guy at a flea market "do you have any of those old high quality style that used to cost $300?" Yes, I sure do. How much for it? $300. Only one I ever had but it didn't last long. They sure were pretty.

What'd be nice, would be to have several of the RGBW LEDs, each feeding a different part of the bundle of fibres. So you could have multiple colours on your ceiling (etc) at once. You could do it with these just by ordering several kits and mixing the fibres up on the ceiling, or you could split the bundle into a few smaller ones, and have a unit with several LEDs to drive it. Does it do fading between colours or just flat switching? You could maybe replace the 8051 with an AVR or PIC, and program in some better effects. It could use the existing hardware. Unless the 8051 is a weird one with high-current driving for the LEDs, but it's not, right? Maybe a computer interface would be good, use one of the generic radio modules and connect it to a PC to send the light control signals. This is something I might do to my house if I were decorating. Bet it can be pleasant in the right place. Even, maybe, just a plank of wood on a stand, with fibres fitted into holes, would make a nice lamp.

I pay for KZbin red as it's honestly the only platform I watch videos on. I don't care about any tv shows (Besides the grand tour on amazon) and seldom have time to watch movies. So paying for KZbin is worth it to me. Thanks for your many great videos Clive!

I have watched this video twice now. Once yesterday, and today. In both cases have had the pre-roll skippable add at the beggining. No popup adds during the video. Watching in the UK. Hope that helps :) PS love the videos Clive :)

Pre-Roll skippable " B and Q " advert when viewed with Chrome browser. : Pop Up box advert with 'close box' when viewed on Firefox. (No idea what the crappy badly animated pop up ad was for, closed it quick to get it out the way) : Keep up the good work Clive. Your info and opinions are very much appreciated.

hi Clive just a little note to help with the number of strands and the reason for the larger fibre holder ( cable gland ). When you use the set you will need to cut the fibres closest to the light box. When this is done you will have leftover fibres that can be used for the next circle etc that will fan out from the light box. I hope you know what I mean?.. So when it's all finished you should have more than doubles the amount of strands used. When bound with tape and put back into the gland It will be about 400 strands used. Cheers

I´ve modified a poundland (Or "Euro-shop" in Germany) fiber light. It was just a sealed microcontroller cycling trough colors with three leds. I´ve completely ripped out the circuit, added an 12v 3W RGB LED spot and a Led strip controller. I put in a boost converter, so I could use the battery compartement. Unfortunately, the 3W LED drains the battery very quick and they get very hot while operating. It looks very good tough, and you can control it too.

1:40 Skippable ad here. US. Whenever I view my videos on my channel, I always get an add regardless, unless I look at them through the edit mode in video manager. That would be cool to put on a set of stairs, either going on top of the steps, or out the front face of the steps. So many possible applications!

I can thing of another use where you use the bit with the stub into a large tos-link connector and run the other fibres to the other rooms then on to the tos-link DAC which will feed the back of the music system in that room you know what I mean piping music from the main room to any room in your house and no other ugly cables to be seen.

What I got last night was an ad for Acura that I could skip in 5 seconds. The past few vids I've watched today including loading this one have had an ad that I had to wait 10 seconds to skip. In this case it was an ad for Impastor. First time I've seen the longer wait times on those skip buttons. :/

the amount of various parts amazes me, for instance, where did they get that metal enclosure from? is it just for this project or is it mass manufactured? and where does the metal come from? who digs up the ore for that metal and how is it produced? there sjust so many components and so many people and lines down the chain of production and yet its still so cheap since we've gotten so good at doing these things.

Hi Clive, is it true that the internal reflection is achieved with a coating? A plain perspex rod will behave in the same 'light guide' way with no such coating. The light leaks out wherever the surface isn't polished doesn't it? Brilliant videos, as always - thank you for hours of educational entertainment. Will.

I found this to be very interesting and very informative. I was hoping that you would have shown it in a ceiling as an example. Also, can this unit be set to "twinkle" so to speak, or can it be set to fade in and out into the different colors, rather than just abruptly changing from one color to the next. I really do appreciate you response if you're able. Thanks.

I appreciate your very quick response, but is the unit you're referring too as affordable, or close to the price of the unit in this video? I'm aware of units that have the rotating wheel, but the ones I know about are very expensive. They come from weidamark.com.

Nice video. I am thinking of making something with fibers like that. See... since a bit over year my wife and I have this new hobby: *Geocaching.* I try to make a flat plane where I put the fibers in several patterns. Instead of using a LED light source this kit came with, I want to have to _"visitors"_ bring a bright flashlight. And instead of having the fibers meet at one single point, I want to create a small ridge, a channel where a the flashlight can slide over. By sliding it from left to right, some fibers are going to be lit. This way a simple animation happens at the visitor's side of the construction. At the end the visitor will see a number or a GPS coordinate _they_ have to go next. It seems like a cool little crea-cache, as the geocache community calls it. The trick for me is to make the patterns on a board, and have the fibers stick to it. I will cover the plane with "mirror foil", since that fits a certain theme I have in mind. Do you think it makes sense to spray paint chrome colored paint on the fibers? I just want to make sure to not loose too much light, since I don't know what kind of light the _visitor_ might bring. And I noticed that the fibers spilled a lot of light. I want to try to keep as much light inside the fiber until it is shown to the _visitor_

You could drill a panel with a grid of 5 x 7 dot matrix style holes with the fibre bundle making up the words and numbers, and the unused positions with a stud of identical but unconnected fibre protruding. I wouldn't recommend spraying the fibres with paint. They have a thin coating of material to make them work that could be damaged by solvent.

Don't think I've seen "Pre-roll" Ads on KZbin since very early on. I get the ones interspersed in the middle of videos, though I don't think yours are often long enough, and it's a bit random. As in, if I watch the same longish video 15 times, I'll get an ad in it maybe 3 of those times I play back. In this video, on first play-back, I'm only seeing the caption ad with the close button on it, which I only ever click if the advert is incredibly offensive, which can happen. It changed to a different ad twice, that I noticed, during playback.

No pre-roll, only a "Home Loan rates from 3.41% by Mozo" banner centered across the lower part of the screen, along with a "Gmail for Work" sidebar ad. Can't recall what I normally get. I run adblock but have your channel whitelisted.
Run LED strings on USB chargers and power banks.
