Using rare picture archives from the concert vaults and European television, a prominent team of critics and musicians focuses on the music of Genesis from both the Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins eras to understand how this remarkable work lasted for more than thirty years. The documentary covers the band’s albums from Trespass to Duke, featuring interviews with band members and experts, as well as live performances and studio footage.
The film was part of a series of documentaries about Genesis that Carruthers made, covering different periods of the band’s history. The film was released in 2004, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, the last album that featured Peter Gabriel as the lead singer. The film explores the creative and personal dynamics of the band during a time of transition and experimentation, as well as the impact of their music on their fans and the industry.
The documentary features many songs from the albums that Genesis released between 1970 and 1980, such as Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, A Trick of the Tail, Wind & Wuthering, …And Then There Were Three…, Duke, and Abacab. Some of the songs that are played or discussed in the documentary are: The Knife, The Musical Box, Supper’s Ready, Firth of Fifth, The Carpet Crawlers, Ripples, Afterglow, Follow You Follow Me, Turn It On Again, and Abacab.
