Guatemala is famed for their iconic “chicken buses” (also known as camionetas)… but where do they come from? And how do these bus conversions take place?

For our latest documentary, we got under the bonnet of Guatemala’s camionetas.
Across several days, we travelled to a number of Guatemalan reconstruction garages to learn more about the art of transforming written off U.S school buses into Guatemalala’s public transport. Think bold lights, colours and chrome.

Has the fatality rate changed? I have traveled on them a few times and they are great. I felt safe and no problems.

I really wish we could tell you, but we were unable to find any more recent statistics. Having said that the footage we sourced was relatively recent. We’ve never had a bad experience on the camionetas either, but that’s not to say that things don’t happen. Thanks so much for tuning in!
