I went underground in a abandoned copper mine in Arizona looking for specimen grade copper ore. The azurite and Malachite specimens I found were far beyond what I expected. I loved this trip. Thanks Ryan and Chris for taking to this site.

I got to dig in the Morenci Arizona mine back in 96. For 20 dollars they'd give you hard hat and take you down in the mine. I filled up an 8 gallon bucket with Azurite, Malacite and Chrysocolla . My friend found a copper hair sticking out of a chunk of Chrysocolla.Thank you for making this video Dan.

This reminds me of when i was younger, my grandfarther, father, and i used to be part of the Gold Prospectors Association of America, and we used to go to plenty of areas that looked just like this but there was one specific area and it was outside of Orogrande Nm. There are some mountains right behind the town that have tons of mines and deep vent shafts scattered around. One of the mines went completely through a mountain. was fun just to walk through it and see the mineral deposits and what not.

The difference between malachite and azurite is the unit cell structure, meaning the way the atoms are arranged. The formula of malachite is Cu2CO3(OH)2 while azurite is Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2. Since azurite is essentially the same but with less OH (hydroxide), the atoms have to arrange in a different way which makes the structure interact differently with light, leading to the color difference.

Welcome to AZ Dan! The blue mineral at 8:30 looks more like a weathered chrysocolla, and the samples at 13:00 look like Shattuckite. Old mine dumps are excellent hunting grounds for mineral samples as many of the old time miners wouldn't keep anything lower than 1% grade. But there are still plenty of great samples that are less than 1% grade.

When you first buy a 4wd vehicle it's a good idea to take it out and find some juniper branches and the like to scrape it against. Get some good scrapes and scratches. Then, when you are on hairy roads, you can concentrate on the footing and not worry about the extraneous stuff! 🙂

5:10 Little addition to the GLOTD: As Chris said, azurite and malachite are in fact not sulfides of copper - they are basic carbonates, which means it's a mixed hydroxide and carbonate. All of the sulfur has been oxidized at this point to form SO2, sulfate and other oxidation products. During the oxidation process, there also has to be a source of CO2 or carbonate ions present. What determines if it's azurite or malachite from a chemical point of view is the carbonate to hydroxide ratio, azurite has the same number of carbonate and hydroxide ions, malachite has two hydroxides per carbonate. When in contact with water, azurite can degrade over time forming malachite, releasing CO2, sometimes creating beautiful pseudomorphs

I grew up in san diego California in the 70s and 80s. During that time me and my fiends explored alot of canyons and other places. Well there was this canyon behind my friends house we used to walk through as a short cut to get to another friends house plus we would use the canyon as a hang out spot. I always used to find these powdery green in hues rocks. Never knew what they were ? Always found em in the gully at th3 botto of the canyon. Or day me and a friend were walking up the Sid of the canyon and my friends food went through Thu ground. We were curious and dug up the dirt. Turn out there was a cave that had been covered over with wood and buried. wasn't a big long or deep cAve just went in about 70 feet.it had wooden piling holding up Thu ceiling and I being a hot humid area the wood was very stable. But we noticed alot of that green dusty rock I The walls. One day i took a piece to a teacher. Turns out it was an old copper cave. There used to be alot of em around the area back in the 20s and 30s. We did find old bottles that were broken and old broken wood boxes but nothing else. We started using it as a hangout spot until homeless junkies took it over.I'm glad we didn't stay using it. An earthquake caved it in a few years later.

I would say, it is up for debate, whether you can call azurite and malachite sulfides, as they do not contain sulfur. They are oxidized/carbonized from sulfides, but alk the sulfur is gone. Cabonates or carbonhydrites, not sulfides in my book. Beautiful stuff, you found. 👍💪👍🌞🌞

Azurite is Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 while malachite is Cu2CO3(OH)2. The difference being that one has double the copper and one extra molecule of carbon trioxide... basically you can think of malachite as being the more weathered version of azurite.
