Inside Ivory Coast's hidden gold rush takes a look at the gold mining industry in Ivory Coast. For a long time mining was seen as a dirty alternative to a more wholesome farming lifestyle. But some of the richest gold-mining potential in Africa is luring hundreds of thousands of Ivorians off the land and into the mines.

I grew up there, the thing is bigger countries will hear about this and bring the tech to get this going using labor from the poor people then they’ll pay them a little which in their eyes is a lot. I’ve seen a lot of businesses there that are family owned and making millions but the workers barely get anything

you can't abandon your agriculture or you will always have to rely on other provinces to get your food. you can still dig for gold but when you let your people suffer, especially if you don't use the profits for your community. gold mines dry up over time.

This really opened up how I think about countries like this in Africa. They're basically a century behind the developed world, but they are catching up as the realize the value of there natural resources. However I think that as they grow and experience many of the same things that countries that have already industrialized did, they will know what not to do. It's a culture of extremely hardworking people, Ithink they will prosper much sooner than most expect.

Natural resources (outside of petrol) no longer contribute significantly to national wealth. Africa will never be able to rely on its natural resources to make itself rich. Security, education, free trade, and transition into a service-based economy will make them rich. Resource-poor nations like Japan and Switzerland have no problem succeeding in a global economy because human ingenuity is magnitudes more valuable than natural resources

Are you OK? Mercury is very expensive and these folks watch every drop!!! They are not slinging it around like holy water! That is left wing bias that infers they are spilling mercury everywhere!!! You have mercury all over your house sunshine. You careful with it? Got a curly-cue light bulb? That is mercury vapor!!! Got a themometer, you got mercury :) Got central heat and air? You got mercury switches!!! Got a car that a light comes on when you raise the trunk or hood? You got more mercury switches! 99% of mercury contamination comes from electrical power plants and the manufacture of chlorine. That is a fact!!! You ready to give up electricity? Your old lady ready to give up Chlorox? You are far more of a mercury polluter than these people!!!

I read about that the classical mining companies had the obligation to build roads, schools and hospitals for the host countries in addition to the wages, and operation costs. Now the scenario changed into this; labors are suffering and indemnities are lacking.

government should set up a proper mining operation in that region and aid the workers with modern machinery so they wont have to pollute the soil with mercury .... They are damaging the environment for the future - they should not punish the villagers for trying to make money by shutting the operation down , they should have been smart enough from the beginning to see and opportunity to make a change and invest in that regions mining industry .

Africa has the opportunity to exploit its potential by making sound investment decisions. The gold rush in the Ivory Coast is one such example. The country is so rich in mineral wealth that one only has to dig a few meters to encounter gold. African governments run by socialist dictators are holding Africa back. Open the markets, open Africa for investment now!
