Carbon fiber manufacturing is cool, but it’s been around for 50 years and not exactly new tech or this aircraft. Same with flight simulators. I was hoping they spend more time on the stuff I was really curious about, but they rushed through it. How exactly is it quieter, is it spinning slower? Is it the blade tips? How quiet is it? Like what are the decibels? How many engines can it loose and still fly? How about when it’s hovering? I have lots of doubts because on my small drone, any engine failure causes it to flip and fall out of the sky. I would love to have seen test video to prove it can still fly with those failures.
@charliedoyle7824Ай бұрын
It sounds like a big leaf blower or giant electric weed trimmer, like a big air whoosh with an electric whine. There is no big helicopter thumping or airplane engine noise that travel so far. When it flies overhead at 1000 feet it's pretty quiet; probably barely audible when it's windy. When it's taking off and you're nearby it's not so quiet, but much better than normal aircraft. They manage it with redesigned wingtips of the props and spinning them slower. They can do that because they have lots of propellers providing lift. Electric propulsion systems are also inherently quieter than reciprocating engines. Joby has fewer propellers than other EVTOLs, so they may have less redundancy. Most have eight props, some even more. Joby can lose all engines and glide in if it's within glide-reach of a runway or field. It can lose one engine for sure and still land vertically. I have to think it could lose two and land vertically, but I'm not sure if it can lose two front engines on the same side. It can probably lose over 50% of its engines and land horizontally like an airplane. Having six tilt propellers plus wings with three-axis stability and sophisticated control systems and software make it nothing like hobby drones. These electric motors also are double motors, with two separate windings in one unit. If one unit fails, it powers it's other unit, and doesn't miss a beat. Other EVTOLs have double props hooked to one unit, one on top and the other below it. They all also have three or more battery arrays with three or more different controllers that should fail for different reasons. These things are far more redundant than any other aircraft. And electric propulsion is far more reliable and needs less maintenance than conventional propulsion systems.

Too busy for human pilot maybe, but with anti collision systems it's not a problem, have you seen the drones shows where hundreds of drones are making light show 2 feets apparts while moving in all directions? Airspace is 3D and open while roads are only 2D and linear, there's infinite more space in the air.

Helicopters already exist, these are just safer quieter helicopters.

He said “that’s how easy it is to fly a helicopter”. NOT! All the variables: collective, throttle control, anti torque, cyclic pitch control, etc. coordination is paramount and very difficult or everyone would be doing it 🫤

One of the many reasons that it's not a helicopter.
