The story of Kilmainham Gaol and its connection with Irish history culminating in the execution of the Easter Rising leaders.
As part of RTÉ television series of programmes commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising, ‘Discovery: The Ghosts of Kilmainham’ explores Kilmainham Gaol.
A prison fortress for over 100 years Kilmainham Gaol is described as
The Bastille of Irish Nationalism... for generations a symbol of oppression and tyranny.
In this scene from the programme a young boy and girl, brother and sister Tim and Minnow Gallagher., are seen visiting the Gaol. As the names of each of the executed leaders of the 1916 Rising are called out a gunshot sounds and a cell light goes out.
Patrick Gallagher writing in the RTÉ Guide, 8 April 1966, describes the programme as follows.
The Ghosts of Kilmainham is a programme evoking the spirit of this prison, a film in which the camera explores the jail as it now is, attempting to conjure up the shades of those countless men who lingered in its cells over so many generations.
‘Discovery: The Ghosts of Kilmainham’ was broadcast on 11 April 1966. The programme was narrated by Aindreas Ó Gallchoir and Chris Curran with a script by Patrick Gallagher.

The murder of our late leaders only fulled what was to come especially my hero's Michael Collins and my great uncle who fought alongside Collins..... Been there many times and it really brings home what those great men did 4 our freedom and to be a sovereign state, Not many took on the mite of the British empire and won especially a small country like ours but when you have men like Michael Collins and pearse and Connolly b4 him we couldn't lose.... I'm not going down all the shit that came after it or going all political because those days are behind us the Brits are alrite now🙊😂 But like any country including England we are allowed to celebrate the lives of those great men and women who fought 4 our freedom and sovereignty, I'm so proud anytime I go and pay my respects at Collins grave and all of his comrades names that are written around his grave that my great uncles is amongst them as he once told me he like many would of died for him but he lived a long and happy life until he died in 1989 aged 94 and it'll be Michael Collins 100th anniversary this August.... I sincerely hope they are never forgotten 🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
