Awesome stuff. I grew up across the road (like really) from Claremont Speedway. There was a driver who raced there called Des J Nash. I’m pretty sure he went there and raced once. Possibly also at World of Outlaws. His nickname was ‘The Outlaw’. I reckon I’d like to see Knoxville one day.

Knoxville also has a dark side that seldom, if ever, gets mentioned. Two incidents I witnessed. At a weekly Saturday night show, early 70s, wingless. During hot laps, they announced a crew chief (mechanic, back then) was going to hot lap this car (I think it was dark blue) instead of the normal driver. First lap, I was in awe. Fastest car on the track, by far. Second lap, hit the wall in turn 1. I knew he was dead on-the-spot. He was. Show went on. Knoxville Nationals Champion, Jan Opperman, was sort of a long-haired hippy/gipsy non-conformist free spirit associated with the drug culture. Jan persuaded and convinced his brother Jay Opperman to come and race at Knoxville too. Soon after, Jay was killed there. Back when 2 quonset huts aligned the backstretch. Opperman won the Nationals driving for Cahill. He almost won another driving for Speedway Motors #4x. But a big burly guy with a uni-brow, named Dick Gaines passed Opperman on the last turn of the last lap driving a white #11 for Karl Kinser.

This is motorsport and it is dangerous. My first ever night at Knoxville in '06 was when Steve King crashed. It's the dark side of the sport that hurts. Toby
