Iron smelting is said to have begun in Awka. The rest of Igboland, even Yorubas, visited Awka in search of iron implements. Their Obi is called Ezeuzu, which means king of iron smelting.

This is a really great video! Such an important site when piecing together the history of civilization and should definitely be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Given the importance of iron production to human civilization, what is learned about this site and the people who lived here could add much to understanding how civilization and societies developed.
