The instructor knows how to simplify difficult technologies. The uncommon quality among Cisco instructors. If you can understand these terminologies, NAT becomes easy. Well done!

Oh God. Thank you. I was tearing my hair out reading obtuse RFC's and wondering why outside local/outside global are the same values (in which case why tf are they diff terms). But obviously I was unaware of more complex configs such as twiceNAT or NAT-ing destination IP

Yup! That is a perfectly valid use case for Twice NAT =). I wrote about that here: www.practicalnetworking.net/stand-alone/vpn-overlapping-networks/ I wrote more about Twice NAT here: www.practicalnetworking.net/series/nat/policy-nat-twice-nat/

What if you have another host in the same network as A, and that host (let's call it C) uses the same port as A (3333) and sends a packet to the same destination IP+port combination? When host B responds, how does the NAT device know which packet belongs to A and C? Won't all information be the same? Or the source port on C cannot be the same as on A, because if C happens to select the same one at random as A, the NAT device sends it back to C and requests a new port address? I assume at least that the NAT device uses the ports in order to keep track of which packets belong to which hosts, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
@PracticalNetworking3 жыл бұрын
Ahh, you're describing exactly the situation that forces a Dynamic PAT to change the source port on behalf of the host (Host C, in this case). I unpack it in more details in this article: www.practicalnetworking.net/series/nat/dynamic-pat/ Or, if you prefer video form, I also unpack it in this (free) NAT course: classes.pracnet.net/courses/network-address-translation

Nice explanation! So the outside local address will always be the same as the outside global address ? In that case what is the point of having 2 types instead of one ?
@PracticalNetworking4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time, yes, but not *all* of the time. There are instances where the Router is translating the Outside host address. You would see this in cases Twice NAT: www.practicalnetworking.net/series/nat/policy-nat-twice-nat/#twice-nat
@lucas931774 жыл бұрын
Thanks yes indeed and I just found out that they are also different when using ip nat outside for translating the source from a host outside to an inside host !

@PracticalNetworking3 жыл бұрын
@@gauravtrivedi80 No worries. I understand. I've updated the codes for Udemy on my site: www.practicalnetworking.net/classes/ The Udemy coupon codes won't let me create a long-term coupon for less than $16.99. I know Udemy runs sales which drops courses to $10~ occasionally. When they do that, they take 1/2 the course fee. =/. Where as the instructor created coupon all the funds go to the instructor. The TLS course is only available on my own teaching platform. That course has been six months in the making and isn't something I could be comfortable with Udemy selling at $10 =/.
