Jeff thank you very much for posting videos that don't try to click bait with doomsday types of titles and thumbnails, like many other finance/investment channels. This is very much appreciated and a big reason why I subscribed to you (and a big reason why I don't subscribe to others). Thanks for all of the great info! Your channel has quickly turned into one of my favorites!

A appreciate this comment as it resonates with me well. It's great to have you here in the community! I love learning more about this stuff together with others. I've been disappointed with my subscription feed more than usual lately. I try not to talk about it much because negativity isn't going to help anyone. For me, I want to make videos that help people with real investing dilemmas. Helping every day people, like myself, to financial freedom is the only goal here. Yes, I would love to make a little money along the way, but slow and steady is okay with me. The crazy thumbnails and ridiculous titles have gotten out of control. It feels disingenuous.

@JeffTeeples disingenuous and an insult to intelligence. Don't be discouraged, I'm certain with your quality of content, if you stay the course, your message will reach more and more people. 12k subscribers is no small feat! I wanted to also ask: Just curious, with the Fed lowering interest rates, are you still holding off on small cap value? Small cap value was a big riser after Trump's victory, a rise that may not mean anything but is interesting to say the least. I've also seen where the lowering of interest rates significantly benefits small cap companies. For context, I have seen your video on small cap value (and appreciated it!). I currently own small cap value as small percentage of my holdings. Thanks!
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
That is a great question. I think small cap value is a solid long-term winner that is poised for a comeback after underperforming for a time. I don't have any immediate plans to add it, but it may be a good idea. I'm more of a large cap guy in general as I'm boring and like the more steady nature, but small cap value has objectively been better in the past. I'm a little torn overall. I don't love trying to time things, but I have to admit, on paper, small cap value is good right now. Just like I've been buying SCHD while everyone else is screaming growth growth growth! It's not that I try to be oppositional just for the sake of it, but often times the masses rides waves a little too long when everything is looking pretty (:

Thank you for taking the time to watch Aurea. Your 6 month member badge looks perfect! (: I appreciate your support. I should mention, JEPQ is AWESOME for retirement IMO. It will likely be a nice chunk of our rollover Roth IRA when we get closer. I have not lost faith in it at all. Great index with a lot of volatility (which ironically is great for cash-flow because options work well with ups and downs). I needed cash now after quitting my job, and then frankly got a little addicted to it past the need haha. I think my other holdings are better for accumulation, but I didn't want to stain JEPQ as 'a bad holding'. It is fantastic for what it does, and I will be making a video within the month about my REAL strategy for full retirement. Roth conversions + JEPQ will be in there (:

@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
My wife and I used to contribute more because I had a 401k as well. This is now part of my E*Trade rollover IRA because I quit my job to start this channel a year and a half ago. Thankfully, the market kept doing amazingly well. We contribute what the spreadsheet says ($3,662 per month). This is her 401k and HSA, and it includes a crazy company match (almost half). So 'we' only contribute about half, but our accounts see inflows of $3,662 per month because of the company help. About $2,000 or so comes from her check. Maybe a little more. I also contribute $100 per week to M1 Finance from this KZbin channel. I consider it a buffer and a bonus to the 'projections', so I don't include it on the spreadsheet to make it more conservative (8% assumed growth and M1 Finance being an additional boost). Honestly man, get started early. If you're already late, get started now. You'll be happy regardless of the magnitude. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is NOW. Don't be the person that complains about not having shade forever because you didn't plant the tree many years ago. This answer is general motivation for everyone, not necessary directed at you. You got the wheels turning in my head haha.

But after being asked a few times what am *I* going to do it gave me the idea for the video. I think Roth Conversion Ladders and 72(t) early withdrawals will be great for people in the $1 to $10 million range. So you were able to get out of JEPQ (shares you sold) after getting all those payments from it, as a long term capital gain, and it was in the green?
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
Hey Oldrin. This is correct. JEPQ pays monthly dividends as long as you hold it. These are yours to keep forever. I wanted to sell it to put the money into my modern 3-fund portfolio. It was carrying an unrealized gain, so I wanted to wait at least a year to sell it. This is because I wanted to take advantage of long-term capital gains to help my taxes. I didn't want more ordinary income within the taxable income. All the gains from my JEPQ (not the dividends, the price gains) were taxed like the favorable SCHD dividends because I held the tax lot for at least 1 year before I sold it. The dividends, unfortunately, are taxed as ordinary income from the covered call ETF.
@martinguldnerAutisticSwanGuru

@@JeffTeeplesdividends received from JEPQ are qualified dividends covered call premiums that are not. I know because I've owned JEPQ for 2 years in my taxable brokerage account and seen it on my 1099 statement.
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
This is correct. Unfortunately 92% of the dividends (last year) were from the covered calls. JEPQ uses holdings from the Nasdaq-100 index, which is extremely low yielding. But you are correct that under 10% of the dividends are qualified. I mention that in some videos, but fail to always point it out. Good call and thank you.

Do you still recommend JEPQ?
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples 28 күн бұрын
I do. It is my favorite high yielding asset by a wide margin. I should say that it is important that the risk is understood. If someone needs access to that money in the near term, it isn't the best. The Nasdaq-100 comes with some volatility. But it is my favorite 'long-term' index AND it produces awesome cash *because* it is volatile. In retirement when I have a huge portion of JEPQ in the Roth, a market crash will be fantastic. I will be living on dividends at that point and won't care about the base asset value. The crash will bode well for the dividend yield (it loves a high VIX) AND the reinvestments (at least 20%) will buy more shares per dollar, which produce more dividends. It's a weird concept, but a market crash is amazing for dividend investors that don't sell shares to pay the bills (via 4% rule) assuming all bills are covered, and then some, with the dividend cash-flow.

How will SCHD perform if long term bond rates begin to rise from 4 to 6%?
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
SCHD will outperform bonds over any duration because of the superior long-term price appreciation and more importantly, the higher yield on cost. I can't say what SCHD will do tomorrow, next month, next year, even in the next 3 years. But I can tell people they will lose a lot of cash-flow and value investing in bonds at any time in their career. This has never yielded different results in well over 100 years. Own a piece of a company always beats lending money to a company. Even considering crashes.

Hey Jeff, thanks for the video. Could you please clarify regarding the VGT and QQQM proportion, cause in some cases it seems that it's going about 50%/50%, but in absolute numbers seems that proportion looks quite different, in the table that you've provided, so what is the best compostion for these two? :) And touching the JEPQ topic, this step was made as you value long term perspectives of SCHD better than having dividends from JEPQ here and now, right?

@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the comment. I like my value (SCHD) and growth (VGT + QQQM + VUG) to be a third each of my portfolio. I find SCHD to be the best value holding for my needs (there are other good ones of course) so it gets the full 1/3 of the value section. VGT and QQQM are split up within the 1/3 of growth. VOO gets the full 1/3 of the cornerstone. VGT is my favorite holding and has been for many years now. But I like 'a little' non-tech in my growth at this point. QQQM gives a nice mix for me.
@rssharma9
@rssharma9 Ай бұрын
@@JeffTeeples I got it. I understand that part. I only want to point out that for young investors, it doesn't make sense to divide the available money equally between Value and Growth; I myself would allocate 80 to 90% to Growth and the rest to Value. But if it makes you happy and comfortable that way, then it's all good. Thanks for the explanations everyone.
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
You are 100% right. I couldn't agree more. I happen to be a third of each because of my risk tolerance and being in my mid-40's. Younger people, generally speaking, will want a growth tilt. Older folks will definitely want a value tilt (unless they have huge portfolios and a lot of cash, then growth + 4% rule is fine).

@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
Oh man Lance, that is an incredible milestone. Your portfolio is looking good man. I plan to keep both QQQM and VGT in my growth section. The lore behind that is that I'm a huge tech bull, always have been and likely always will be (nothing to do with the current market, AI, blah blah, just seems to always be the 'next thing' in general for the last 30 to 40 years). That said, VGT is 100% tech, and even I got a little suspicious about *that* much tech. After diving deep and realizing (at the time) QQQ had actually outperformed VGT in the last 20 years (this may have changed now, but it is at least close still), I thought QQQM would be a nice balance of 'still tech heavy' but not 'only tech'. But then I realized I do love tech enough to keep my favorite ETF VGT, so I landed on 75% tech in growth (about half of each) for my long-term planning. I sold a chunk of VGT to get started in QQQM. But then decided to let it ride and to (eventually) put 'new dollars' into QQQM when growth becomes underweight. Long-term, I'm happy with the 50/50 mix of them. When retirement, which I'll make a video about soon, I'll lean more to SCHD in the taxable account, and JEPQ in the Roth IRA accounts. I may still have some QQQM and VGT at that point, but when I can cover life with passive income I'll tone it way down.

I'm a VGT guy personally. All options will be done for me through something like JEPQ in retirement. I like the passive approach. The QQQM in E*Trade is my nephews holdings. I used it because I didn't want to have to manually separate VGT and XLK each video, haha. He'll be off my custodial account in E*Trade in about a year (he just turned 17). Funny story, I would have done the same with QQQM. I would buy him SCHG instead to keep them separate as well. However, he had QQQM a lot longer than me (I chose it for him before I was interested in buying it). The Seeking Alpha and spreadsheet only have my holdings. E*Trade is the only area with his stuff right now.

Thanks for watching and for the comment. If this is in a tax-protected account then that is alright. For someone that is 8, I would highly recommend QQQM over JEPQ. It will (*very* likely) produce greater total returns over the next 40 years. JEPQ is made for people that need cash-flow right away, and is rough on the tax bill (if in a taxable brokerage account). Either way, investing for the future is great!

@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
This is a great question. I do actually have a little (around $15k in E*Trade) in Roth IRAs. My wife and I worked and fell in the 22 to 24% bracket for years with our combined income. I focused on contributing money to our traditional 401ks to get the tax brake in the year the money was earned. This saved 22 or 24%. When I left my job to start this KZbin channel, we were able to both contribution to Roth IRAs on the side. Now it makes sense to take that path. This is the first full year. When she is fully retired and all we have is this channel (I make under $1k a month still here), we will start to aggressively fill up the full 10% and 12% tax brackets (might be 15% again by then) with Roth Conversions each year. Ultimately all our money will be in a taxable or Roth account well before the RMDs in our 70's. But I played the long-term tax game with a strategy I think will save us the most money before we hit 65 to 70. I'm making a video about this soon.

This is a great question. My cash is in different places so it isn't as easy as dropping a decimal to get the figure on a snapshot. However, that is what I use the spreadsheet in this video for. It takes all of my holdings and gives me a cash % on the target allocation page. When that gets above 10%, I know it is time to buy. When it is below 10% I know it's time to wait and add more to cash. I update this every Friday to see what the coming Monday (my buying day) looks like. Have done it since before the channel. I only 'tracked' the snapshots since 1/1/2022, but have been using the sheet far longer than that. One day I realized it would be cool to keep history (:

@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
Absolutely! That is a great plan, and if you stick with it (especially when the market crashes and everyone else is running, you keep buying) you will be very wealthy down the road. The money you put in during a crash will make you wealthier than other contributions. Just stay the course and invest no matter what is happening. Overlap is very misunderstood. It is not (always) a bad thing. At all. Those funds are fundamentally different and if each section of your portfolio is treated as a category (growth, cornerstone, value), you effectively have 0% overlap. I need to make a video to explain this concept further because a lot of people think overlap is bad (which again, it can be sometimes).

I was looking into ABBV,JNJ, or BSX (a lot in healthcare) I want solid growth but I would also want good/stable returns. Should I get into XLV instead of the ETF that holds all of them aswell as UNH and ELI? Of course I will be DCA into any of them.
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
First of all, congratulations for investing at 20 years old. I'm retroactively very jealous of you (: I would build a solid foundation of ETFs up first, personally. I do think you have solid holdings for your individual positions, but it is a lot harder to time entrances and exits with individual holdings in general. And unlike ETFs, they can't go to ZERO (or close to in many cases) when things go awry. You're young, so I would personally lean heavily on something like VGT or QQQM (or both) to get exposure to all of the major tech players over the years. I would certainly have VOO and SCHD as well in the cornerstone and value sections, respectively. I'm 42 and I like a third of each (growth, value, cornerstone). But at 20, you can afford (and even flourish because of) major crashes if you don't panic sell and you keep DCA in. I would lean something like 40% VGT or QQQM (or a mix), 40% VOO, 20% SCHD. Again, you don't have to do exactly that, but the point is that if you DCA in over multiple decades you will be looking great! Stay the course and keep learning. You'll be happy for it later on in life.

Hey Oscar. Thanks for watching and for the question. I think having QQQM or VGT as your only growth holding works just fine. A combination of them will give you between 50% (QQQM) and 100% (VGT) tech in your growth section. I'm a major tech bull and I used to roll with VGT for 100% tech there. I prefer a mix now to get about 75% tech in my growth section. Bottomline is that QQQM is just fine for your growth section, but mixing them (split dollars within growth to make sure it is still balanced with value overall) doesn't hurt at all.

I like SCHG better than VUG. I only have VUG because it is the only decent option in our HSA. I would have 50% QQQM / 50% VGT if I started from scratch today. Thank you for watching and for the question. I don't have any thoughts past the video insights. I love JEPQ and will have it in my Roth in retirement. Right now I prefer my modern 3-fund portfolio holdings in the accumulation stage. QQQM will (and has) outperform JEPQ, even with dividends included, because of the higher expense ratio of JEPQ and the nature of covered call ETFs lowering the ceiling in favor of passive income. In retirement, I will care less about maximum growth and more about passive income. JEPQ is great for that. Also, in my taxable account the dividends count as ordinary income and they push my wife and me into a higher tax bracket. That is another negative with this current flow.

I think JEPQ is great to be clear. I sold it because I'm in the accumulation phase of investing and the non-qualified dividends and lack of total return compared to its index (Nasdaq-100, QQQM) are better suited for retirement. I'll use JEPQ in my Roth (so the ordinary income doesn't hurt me) in retirement for sure. And I'll reinvest some of the cash-flow just like you said. For now, I like the modern 3-fund portfolio and it's qualified income better in this stage. It is nearly impossible for JEPQ to outperform QQQM over a long period of time. This is because of the expense ratio and the ceiling capping of the nature of covered calls. It makes less total returns on upswings by design, because it shields downside with juicy cash flow. It will be a flatter return line (this is with dividends included) than QQQM over time, assuming the market goes up (which it always does when we zoom way out). That said, I look forward to juicy JEPQ in full retirement in the Roth!

It was more upper 40's I think, but I don't base selling on profit or loss. This was based on my portfolio strategy for the accumulation phase. JEPQ was a temporary Band-Aid after I quit my job to start this channel. It will be a permanent fixture in retirement most likely. I think JEPQ is great for what it is.

@charlielipthratt7291 Ай бұрын
@JeffTeeples - I was surprised that you sold it! But I get the non qualified dividends dilemma. I've got a .05% chunk of JEPQ in my Roth to fill in the cracks and raise up my early retirement dividends. The plan was to sell it along the way as SCHD and other dividend payers raised their payouts each year. And that might still happen, but it's done so well that I bought 8k more when it dropped under $50 in Aug! I think it's going to be hard to give up those returns if it keeps paying 8 to 9% and slowly moving up.
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
Hey Charlie. Oh I'm still surprised too. I loved the 9%+ cash-flow so much. It was a tough one to walk away from, but I assure you that is temporary. I'm making a video soon to show my full retirement plans and JEPQ along with Roth Conversions will play a key role! I love JEPQ, and my feelings about it haven't changed. I'm just focusing on long-term total returns with qualified dividends at this time. I think QQQM and VGT are better for the accumulation phase. Its a hard cut because I 'love all my children (ETFs) equally' haha.

Any decent funds that track bitcoin (like IBIT) but pay a small dividend (under 5%)?
@JeffTeeples

I have no idea about this one. I only have read about the spot bitcoin ETFs that traces price (like IBIT). For me, BTC is not a dividend play, more of a dark horse with potential crazy price upside. I keep it to a small portion of my portfolio.

So am I correct in saying you’ve grown this from 80k in 2012 to 1.4M in last 12 years???? How much are you putting in each month out of curiosity?
@JeffTeeples
@JeffTeeples Ай бұрын
Hey Kevin. That's correct. I have returned around 16% in that time (outperforming the market by quite a bit). But even with just using VOO or VT the power of compound is crazy. The numbers from the back test are 'close'ish' to being right. I mean, we did put in more as we made more money. But I have to use a consistent figure in the scenario on portfolio visualizer. I don't know what we had in 2012 to be honest, I just use $80k as a guess. But the numbers used in the back test are 'pretty close' to reality.

Haha, love it Roy. Man, we have a lot in common even outside investing. My friends and I were obsessed with sports cards (and sports in general). Used to go to a local store called Nick's Picks and buy cards on a weekly basis (in addition to renting a video game for the weekend at another place near by). Oh the good ole days (: Thanks for watching and being a pillar of the community here. It has been fun.
