Inside Norway's $47 Billion Floating Highway

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is in the process of creating the world’s first floating highway. The Coastal Highway Route E39 will cut down a 21 hour travel time between the Norwegian cities of Kristiansand in the south and Trondheim in the north by at least half through the elimination of seven different ferry crossings. These crossings will be replaced with bridges, tunnels, and the innovative new Submerged Floating Tube Bridges which give the Coastal road its nickname. But Norway has its work cut out for it, as a project of this size and scale with the use of the floating tunnels has yet to be completed anywhere else in the world-- and attempting the historic roadway project will cost more than $47 billion.
With many fjords to safely traverse, the project is getting help from Universities, researchers and engineers all over the country. Though the project isn’t expected to be completed until 2050, they’ve already got a head start on constructing their first floating tunnel called the Rogaland Fixed Link or Rogfast. While the construction has allowed them to work out some kinks, it’s also cost $2 billion so far-- and that budget is growing. Norway aims to maintain its pristine natural beauty with these hidden highways, but first they have to figure out how travelers can remain safe at 150 feet underwater. Check out our video for all the details on this innovative new highway-- and how the rest of the world may soon follow in Norway’s footsteps.

From the perspective of someone playing Simcity or Civilization, this is obviously really fascinating and exciting. From the perspective of someone who's terrified of drowning or being trapped underwater, I'd be more than a little anxious that something terrible happened (e.g., natural disaster, terrorist attack) causing me to die a watery grave.

you need to play Subnautica. And if you intend to do, do yourself a favor and never look anything up about that game. If you look it up you'll spoil 50% of its magic. Many players - myself included - wish to get their memory wiped out so they can experience the wonders of that underwater-y game all over again. I don't guarantee that you'll cure your water phobias after playing the game, but you will definitely look at the oceans differently :)

If you don’t agree with a border, let your neighbor onto your property. Leave your doors unlocked at night. In fact, keep all your lights on and your doors wide open. Let people do what they want. sounds good but once those waves get rough and the sea pushes the concrete tunnel, bear in mind that concrete is only good in compression and not torsion or swaying, its going to be a big big problem. I doubt a buoyant float or some cables will stop it from flexing in the ocean unless there is some new type of concrete that is flexible and I don't think that will ever be possible lol.

The 47 billion dollars, if distributed instead to each household ($20,800), would go a long ways towards the purchase of an electric car, which would cut gas usage dramatically.

Hey experts, I have a question. Have the designers considered about any density changes in sea water. I feel like that it will affect to the upthrust force on the floating tube parts for sure. Also, will the sea water rising due to global temperature affect on this floating highway?

@silvergreylion 3 жыл бұрын
Water density change will be the least of the concerns. Sure, there will be a minor difference from meltwater in the spring, but not enough to be a real problem. Sea water rise is currently about 2.2 mm per year, and daily ebb/flood is much, much more than that. 100 years = 22 cm rise, not a problem. There needs to be moving elements between each pontoon and the concrete tube it's attached to, to adjust for ebb/flood, and that's where I see at least a few problems. Anyway, I think the biggest issue would be a big storm forcing water into the fjords, raising the level a few meters, *and* putting a sideways force on the pontoons, as well as the submerged tube. I'm quite certain it's not possible to design something which would withstand those forces, at least not without blowing the budget completely out of proportions.

@@silvergreylion with those red pontoons (?) on the surface they showed which would enable traffic to pass safely through… what if someone deliberately crashes into it… I know that these kind of things are rare in Norway but there is always that worry

Yes, lets rather stay safe inside our own homes for the rest of our lives and fear everything. And easy terrorist attack? Should the entire humanity sink to a level where we avoid everything because something "could" happen? Trust me, it's still more dangerous to go to a mall in the US than using one of these tunnels once ready.

Been thinking about this Highway idea for years and other variable highways to make trips less long. But most cities only listen to millionaires and Billionaires to see what's possible.. Thank God engineering is taking a massive upgrade over time. I remember Elon Musk mentioning a tube style highway in an interview. Be looking for more videos on these incredible builds.

Norway solves that with increased tolls for driving on that road, so the users pays for the roads they use. Usually the price is set for a duration of 20-30 years I think? So after that the road is "paid for" and they remove the tolls.
