Yeah but to extend the metaphor, the knowledge that I *am* the traffic doesn't make my boss any more likely to let me work from home. I live just down the road from Greenham Common, in 1958 there was a nuclear disaster where a B-47 loaded with a nuclear weapon caught fire, leaking uranium and plutonium particles. Just like AWE Aldermaston, it has been linked to higher cases of cancer in the area. There was a lot of finger pointing between AWE and Greenham Common but it does seem to have originated from that B-47 bomber disaster

I live in nearby Basingstoke and have my whole life. We don’t get those little blue pamphlets so if it weren’t for my interest in nuclear history I wouldn’t know what to do in an emergency, not that it would make much of a difference I’m sure. Besides what I’m trying to get at is that residents of Basingstoke (and most likely Reading & Newbury which are all within the 2nd zone) have no clue about what is going on so close to our homes, the dangers and what to do if it all goes to shit. AWE is a huge employer for Basingstoke and I know several people who have worked or do work there. AWE is promoted in local schools and colleges offering STEM opportunities, apprenticeships and jobs. As someone who is against nuclear weapons I found it strange and dystopian how at 16 AWE was promoting itself to students like myself. I understand that it does provide jobs and STEM opportunities but at its core it is a nuclear weapons facility, something very destructive and evil (in my opinion) and the fact that most people have no clue what is going on beneath our feet and are complicit in continuing to help build the UKs nuclear arsenal while completely oblivious of the consequences baffles me.

@Digitiser3 ай бұрын
Well, you're right, but I didn't mention them because the US ones aren't aimed at us.
@MightyJonE3 ай бұрын
@@Digitiser On that point, nor are Russia’s entire nuclear arsenal aimed at us 😊 But my initial comment was a reaction to your line, something like “UK has 260 Trident missiles, Russia has about 6000 [possibly more like 5500] and if you just haven’t - yourself...” Failing to mention the US has the same number (btw, principally because Russia is purposefully matching the US + its 3 main NATO allies’ figure), and that that entire Russian arsenal isn’t aimed at us, gives a skewed impression, and one backed up by emotive language. We should be equally concerned of the combined same number of warheads in the hands of US/NATO as these also combine to make an unsafe world, especially as the Pentagon and US politics generally has become more maverick globally since 9/11, with the Pentagon taking more control of US foreign policy. Where from the late 1980s, nuclear war was considered unthinkable due to the realisation of Mutually Assured Destruction and nuclear winter destroying all life, several years ago The Pentagon drew up plans for the case of making a first-strike limited nuclear war, as reported by either journalist John Pilger or Noam Chomsky or both, I forget who now. The US has increasingly been making more daring and provocative military actions around the world, increasing tensions, over the decades. Even against allies - the US, for example, has almost come to war on a few occasions with Britain in the 20th Century, most notably when it drew up war plans against Britain in late 1920s/early 30s because it saw our trading dominance as a threat to their own ambitions of Empire. The only thing that stopped the US was the rise of Nazi Germany. This was the subject of a C4 documentary around 2000 - the war plans are in a US war museum, forget where. So frankly, wouldn’t even be surprised if there’s the odd US warhead aimed at U.K. and even Europe for whatever paranoid reasons! Lol So back to that OG statement - can’t ignore the US out of the nuclear equation. And if US increases warheads, so too will Russia to match 😊

You know physicists figured a way to set off a Hydrogen bomb without 99% any radiation fallout. It's thought Atomic missiles have the same tech now, massive blast radius without the radiation. The difficulty is separating the truth from the propaganda. My old man worked in a barracks in Mill Hill north London signing nukes in and out. Peace time RSM his official job name was office worker. He took me to work with him a few times in the summer hols because my mum was wheelchair bound and I was a right little git. That was 1972 - 75. Walking passed the armed guards into the air strip he pointed at a carrier with a large missile on it. Cruise. He said. Adding, not even supposed to exist and much less be in Britain. James Bond was fighting guys with Polaris ten years after it wa defunct. When the Greenham Common demos were fighting the arrival of Cruise it was actually Trident arriving because Cruise was defunct. The barracks was called Inglis. Bombed by the IRA. Closed around 1990. Nuclear warning signs erected around the fence of the demolition site. New homes since built on site and all hushed up. I'm unsure about the danger of explosion issue. But in 1980 the blast zones were 50 miles approx with 150 mile fall out zones. My dad died of leukemia aged 69. If you haven't watched it. Watch the drama Chernobyl from last year. It's a classic eye-opener. It's not so much how much truth we're told but rather the majority of official secret lies. Great upload as always.
