Inside One of Newcastle’s Oldest Theatres - Tyne Theatre and Opera House

This video covers the history of the tyne theatre and opera house, located on Westgate road. This is the second largest capacity theatre on tyneside but doesnt get the same level of recognition as the theatre royal on grey street.

Absolutely fascinating building! Laurel & Hardy did a 'walk on' here in 1932 and apparently Pavarotti loved the acoustics in here. Thanks Jordan 👍

I've gone to my daughter's dance show every year, for the past 10 years here. It's a wonderful old building. Pleased it's now listed as grade one. Something we should treasure. We need to save the cooperage!

Hi It Actually has 5 levels at the front not the 3 as you say. The half moon windows at the very top, are the windows to the Gods Bar, and then there is a room above that which does not have windows but has a small door at either side to give access to the roof at the front, this room is accessed through a door at the rear of the gods.

This theatre was originally called Balmbras.............it’s where the ‘we took the bus from Balmbras and she was heavy laden’ from the Geordie anthem Blaydon Races.

Is there a genre split in the type of shows staged at resp. Tyne Theatre and Theatre Royal? It'd be sort of silly if they competed with each other.

They both do a pantomime. But the theatre royale mainly focuses on musicals whilst the Tyne theatre does all sorts
