It hits me hard when they show that the mom is run by Sadness and the dad is run by Anger, yet it’s still a happy family. This shows how multi faceted emotions are. Sadness doesn’t always mean upset, it also means compassion, empathy and understanding. Anger isn’t always rage, it can be passion, confidence and determination. Fear can be cautious or strategic and Disgust can also be pride, standards and morals. You don’t need to be happy all the time in order to be whole. Your emotions don’t define you, it’s your perspective that defines your emotions.

The point where Sadness says “dad doesn’t love us anymore, I should drive right?” And instead Joy pushes her away and takes over is an important example of toxic positivity in this movie. The reason sadness keeps “acting out” is because Joy keeps pushing her away and not letting her take over when she’s supposed to. The same happens when the mom comes up and has her talk with Riley at night. Without realizing it her mom puts an enormous amount of pressure on her daughter to be happy all the time which just isn’t healthy or natural.

I think joy's compulsory optimism was her idea of protecting Riley. Of course you want to protect the ones you love from "bad things", but allowing yourself to feel sadness is important. Even Joy gets sad during the movie.

This movie is INCREDIBLE with color theory. Riley: striped shirt as they're moving with all colors on them to show theyre in harmony, or so it seems. yellow jacket on the first day of school because she's still young enough to be excited. Striped shirt sans blue and yellow at the dinner table because all of her emotions are fighting for control with joy and sadness gone. Black jacket because she's emotionally shutting down. Emotions: joy has blue hair, backing up the theory joy and sadness go hand in hand. Disgust has a purple ascot, suggesting disgust is mainly motivated by what scares us. Anger is wearing a red tie showing how when were angry, we can't see, hear, or feel anything else. Think, "seeing red". And finally Sadness is wearing a white turtleneck as a combination of all the emotions, like how all light is combined to make white light.

@mischr13 2 жыл бұрын
Respectfully....I need to talk about this. Every. Single. Time. someone talks about Inside Out we have to see this comment. ALL movies use color to communicate, it's filmmaking 101. I'm sure some thought went into the colors but not as much as people seem to want to think. A lot of colors are just complementary and tertiary colors and that's why they were chosen. Then people ignore when colors don't go along with what they want the theme to be. Why is Joy's dress green? Do you think happiness is full of disgust? Ofc not. Disgust is the opposite of attraction, so it can't really mix like sadness and joy. truth is, green is a secondary color of yellow, yellow and blue are complementary. So those colors look great together. simple as that. It'd be really boring if every character only had one color. Fear is wearing white...so is fear a mixture of all emotions? Fear is probably our most basic emotion, it's a physiological response, so I don't think so. Bing Bong is pink, so is he mostly anger with a bit of white (every other emotion)? That'd be really weird if the joy of an imaginary friends were cuz kids were balls of rage, eh? The part about anger having a tie doesn't even make sense. He's wearing a tie cuz they're trying to do a whole "work place" theme and he's a male character. Both him and Fear have ties on. Ties don't make you unable to see, hear, or feel? The funny thing is the movie is more charitable to the emotion of anger cuz they say "He cares about things being fair." which is valid and necessary. Anger doesn't make you blind and unable to hear or feel. Anger is VITAL if you care about things like justice. Then Sadness is wearing a turtle neck cuz she looks like the voice actress' character from the office, going along with the whole "work place" theme. (which has it's own myriad of problems but that's a discussion for another day lol) The other persons comment about how the lightbulbs are only blue or purple is flat out not true. You can see other colors of lightbulbs.. The lightbulb they pick isn't even blue, so I'm not sure why it's relevant. By that logic why was Sadness needed to back out the idea? Fear could've done it too, right? In this case the lightbulbs are just in shadow so they have mostly cool tones, it's not like they were trying to say something about how only fear or sadness can back out of ideas. Obviously I like this movie a lot otherwise I wouldn't have noticed all the flaws with your points. Sorry you had to be the one to deal with me finally getting fed up but I am SO tired of seeing this same comment on every video about this movie. I feel like there was some post about this movie and everyone was like "whoa that's deep" but didn't think about it for two seconds longer than that. 😮‍💨😭

Apparently there are some kids' novelizations from the point of view of the different emotions, and Sadness explains a bit about why she was there so quickly when Riley was born. I'm paraphrasing, but she said something like "Look, I could tell that the world was big and loud and kinda cold - and who was gonna know to get Riley a blanket if I didn't teach her how to cry??" I definitely have had to remind myself of that sometimes with our kid, she just turned one.

yep. kids have a harder time recognizing what they’re feeling, especially a baby who absolutely can’t, so crying is a way to release. it gives you some good chemicals to help you regulate and get back to a baseline. also reminds me of the purpose of pain in general. its lack of comfort is there so we know when to do basic things, like eat and go to the bathroom.

@SevenEllen
@SevenEllen 2 жыл бұрын
The part where Riley's train of thought derails and you guys joke she can't think is actually closer to fact than we realise: When we react emotionally, our cerebral cortex can't function to make us produce critical thinking, allowing us to think clearly. This is probably why we say things like "I wasn't thinking" when we do stupid things, which we always do when we're really angry/scared. When we're angry we lash out, and when we're terrified, we panic and think the worst or burst into tears and feel like the world's ending.

51:54 did y'all miss the scene where they did in fact get a call from her teacher? Lol For me, this movie also really highlighted Toxic Positivity really well. And how the more you ignore the "bad" emotions and feelings, the more it wears on you and can lead to depression. Especially in kids. As someone who moved a lot as a kid (I lived in 6 different states as a kid) I DEEPLY empathized with Riley in this. There were lots of times I stifled my anger and sadness for the sake of my family and was ignored when I brought it up anyways. And I suffered a lot of depression. This movie will forever be one of my favourite Pixar films.

I have suffered and dealt with Depression for most of my life as well (as well as with suicidal thoughts and self harm). Depression gets misinterpreted as feeling “sad” when that’s not the case - It’s not feeling anything at all. It’s having no energy, and particular no willpower, to do any of the things you love to do. True Depression can literally make you want to stay in bed all day rather than doing any of the hobbies you loved to do, because that’s where it’s the “safest” and the closest thing you can do to escaping reality when you’re in a very dark head space. I think this film depicted Depression at the end of the film perfectly.
@kiml.1565

Yes, definitely -- at the end of the movie, when she can't feel anything, when she's numb to all the things that used to make her feel good or excited, when she just slumps against the window and IS EMPTY, that's such picture perfect depression. Sadness brought her out of depression -- she got the energy and was able to vent her unhappy feelings, and talking about it helped her loved ones understand, and receiving comfort from them helped her get to a better place emotionally. From the inside of that depression, it feels like too much effort to talk about it, it feels pointless, it won't help, other people couldn't understand, etc... Which is why long-term major depressive disorder is so insidious, and why therapy is an important method of treatment. If you don't talk about your problems, you're always dealing with them on your own. The movie beautifully captures this idea: what sadness does is it brings your troubles to the surface, which is the only way that people can understand you and help you.

There are different types of Depression. You seem to experience melancholic where yes, it does tend to result in feeling nothing and very little mood reactivity. But for a lot of people it IS sadness being an overwhelming amount of what they feel every day. In atypical depression (very common despite the name), you can feel joy, anger, disgust etc. but usually sadness and darker feelings and thoughts are overwhelming most of the time. Someone with atypical depression may seem fine around friends and even feel good around them. But then they leave and the darker thoughts and feelings flood back in the second they are alone. Most people attribute depression as being latter and melancholic depression does need acknowledged more, but that doesn't mean it is the true form of depression. Depression can take away your feelings completely but it can also be so cruel as to only leave you enough to cry every day and question what is wrong with you and why you can't just stay happy.

Same, sadness had a lot of the same mindset I have and Joy was painful to me at first. But seeing the character development it actually helped me sort through some of my own emotions in the aspect of sadness plays a lot bigger part in my life but that doesn't mean there isn't a time for joy. While depression can be very difficult, and the pressure of growing up and being mature is there, joy still allows a level of return to those childhood like feelings that give us the motivation and drive to be inspired, to create, to enjoy life. Idk tbh, but this movie taught me more about the way my mind works than I care to admit, it being a "kids movie" and all. But digging into it's writing and the way everything was designed gives a whole new meaning to the movie.

Notice how Joy has the same colored hair (and eyes) to Sadness. They could have made Joy’s hair be blonde (like how they created the hair of the other emotions to match their bodies), but they chose blue - almost like Joy and Sadness need each other and are bound together (like yin and yang). I don’t know if this was the intention on the writers’ part, but if it was then nice symbolism there. I also love that whenever Fear tries to stop Anger from taking over control of the panel, Anger always overpowers Fear, like how it is irl. I love this movie so much ❤️ ETA: it seems like Stef brought up the hair color thing (and the possible symbolism of that) at the end of the reaction, so that’s cool lol This is why I love your guys reactions: You pay close attention to details (and hidden implications of how scenes can be presented) while watching films and it makes your videos so much more intriguing to watch :)

One of the many great things about this movie is the idea of the console. When Riley is a baby, the console is barely big enough for one of them to stand there, and definitely only one of them can control her, but there isn't a lot to do to "control" her other than touch the console and make her feel something; as a baby, everything she feels is at 100% and very straightforward. She's happy or she's upset. When Riley is a toddler, the console is upgraded and gets bigger, but it's still only wide enough for a few emotions to stand there and the controls aren't all that complicated; she has a rich inner life but she's still a child and she's still limited in her scope. As she becomes a teenager, there's another new console, which has lots of complicated functions because she is getting intellectually and emotionally more complex. And this is when we start getting "mixed" emotions, because she's capable of complicated feelings and nuanced understandings of the world. Thanks for the reaction! You guys have had some amazing insight in the movies I've seen you react to, so I'm really excited to see more.

Joy really didn’t understand the need for sadness is perfectly healthy. If you continue to be happy all the time without feeling anything else, it’ll switch to toxic positivity . Which could lead to numbness and Riley not being able to understand emotions at all. Riley had to feel sad because she had to uproot her entire life. So all her memories turned into nostalgia.. sadness + Joy. This movie did an amazing job in describing how emotions work ❤️ Thus why sadness was compelled to touch the core memories.

I think that's also why Sadness started acting out by touching memories. She felt "suppressed" by Joy like Riley was.

The scene where she comes back home and says that she feels like they need her to be happy always gets to me... My dad died the day after my 10th birthday and everyone kept telling me I was "so strong" and "you're handling it so well" when really I think I felt like I had to be that way so that my mom wouldn't have to deal with my sorrow along with her own... Also within a year she was remarried and we moved to a tiny island (population 406, school had 28 pupils, 4 teachers, one of them being my mom) and I remember not wanting to even bring the subject of my dad up, especially in front of her new husband, because they didn't make it clear that I was allowed... 17 years later I still feel uncomfortable when people call me strong... I've watched this movie multiple times, and watched so many reactions and I still cry every time I watch that scene... Your reactions were great and I loved what you had to say about it... We need to normalise showing sadness, and not propagate toxic positivity.. Especially for children!

When I first watched Inside Out the full emotional impact this movie can have on people actually didn’t hit me until we walked out of the cinema and I had a discussion about it with my friends. A friend of mine was suddenly really quiet when we discussed it and needed a little time to himself because he was so deeply touched and affected by the depiction of mental health problems, especially by the core islands breaking away one after the other. It’s not my all time favorite Pixar movie but it is definitely a really important one.

I never noticed that but wow, def weird they'd let her walk in a new city by herself, especially the first day! (I've been walking to school by myself since second grade, but it was in a real small town and school was 2 blocks away XD) This is by far my favorite pixar movie. It's such a neat way of depicting healthy emotional balance and embracing even the ones we see as "negative". The scene where she breaks down in front of her parents is the first time a Pixar movie ever got me. Sometimes it's hard to remember how things were at that age... but I remember how upset I was hearing my best friend (who had moved to our town from another) talk about her old friends and how insecure that made me feel. So many good small moments you don't catch the first time around.

Bing Bong saying "Take her to the moon for me" wrecks me every time, especially bc not long before this movie came out my nephew lost his grandpa from his dad's side and it was my nephew's first experience with death. I remember when I 1st saw this movie I was 11 or 12 and very depressed. I really liked it when I 1st saw it, and basically spent the whole movie trying SO HARD not to cry (because my mom was next to me haha and i didn't want her to see). I think it explains it pretty well. I mean obviously, you can always come up with plot holes or "what if" scenarios when you really try to think about it, but being about the same age as Riley back then, I really connected with it. I think it was especially because I always got the whole "you're 11/12/13 etc... you can't be depressed! you don't even know what being tired is!"(🙄), so it was pretty validating for me in that aspect. I remember when I was 11 or 12 and being shocked when I heard adults say that because I and most of my friends at the time were struggling pretty hard with it. I also just thought when u were an adult, it suddenly got better. now it sounds dumb but I think it came from the "when I move out/ am on my own it'll go away" idea which isn't how it works entirely. I also think that the message abt sadness is really important. when ur depressed, someone telling you how important sadness is or that you should embrace it can be annoying since you just want to get out of that state. it is a necessary thing to learn to balance tho. toxic positivity can be an issue too and I'm glad they touched on that with the mom telling Riley to keep smiling and be their "happy girl" for their sake, despite her real feelings. the bing bong scene isn't even what made me sad. for me, the really sad lines were when they say "we can't make Riley feel anything" and when she walks through the door and her parents hug her at the end. THAT scene DESTROYED me. sorry for the lowkey trauma dump but this movie has a special place in my heart and I think it's a good tool for kids to work through complicated feelings like depression or learn that sadness is an important emotion sometimes and that it's okay to not always be happy.

I imagine Riley is probably in exactly the right circumstance to fall between the cracks, too -- she's new, so the teachers and staff aren't used to having her there and might not have missed her, or might be more inclined to figure that her parents kept her home from school because of something relating to their recent move.

"Inside Out" is truly one of my favorite movies. I'm definitely not a kid anymore, but I still relate a lot to Riley, even as an adult. I've moved a lot in my life, and I have Autism, PTSD, ADHD, and severe Anxiety/Depression. I have a lot of repressed trauma/memories/emotions that I don't know how to navigate and regulate (which therapy is helping me with). But watching "Inside Out" every now and then forces me to remember that Sadness is essential. I repress emotions big-time; even Joy can be pushed away somehow, leaving no one truly "in charge" of the controls, if you will. Or EVERYONE tries to take over at once. OOOORRRRR -- sometimes I feel an emotion so INTENSELY that it just... Completely consumes me; it seems to erase all rational thought, and then I'll crash and burn and go numb after an intense emotional dump -- whether that be Sadness, Joy, Anger, what have you. So, I very frequently have a hard time regulating and identifying my emotions in general. In therapy, I'll often refer to "Inside Out" and address one of the "core" emotions in order to get to a potentially deeper issue. For example: "I feel Anger because I think I'm jealous of so-and-so because I'm insecure about (blank), and that could explain why I'm having really bad Imposter's Syndrome today." I have a really hard time allowing my emotions to have "equal" control, or just allowing myself to feel a certain one at all sometimes -- like Joy. I'm AFRAID to allow myself to feel Joy (Can we say "SELF SABOTAGE," anybody?!). My psyche is all out of sorts, but I at least understand that and am willing to work on/take steps to heal/allow myself to feel what I need to. And I cannot thank Pixar enough for that. "Inside Out" truly helps me to walk through my own head.

This tangent might not make sense but I’d like to share my perspective. Riley has spent her entire eleven years of life in Minnesota, so of course she’s upset to be in a new, busy, city setting. She IS sad, but she knows her parents are stressed so she’s doing her best to smile and make things easier for them. The comment made by her mom at 12:05 most added fuel to that fire. Even so, sadness is still clawing its way to the surface, shown through Sadness’s sudden urges to make past memories blue. Since Riley is pushing Sadness down and forcing herself to be happy, Joy is disregarding negative (NATURAL) emotions and not bothering to see things from the perspective of her coworker. Additionally; I enjoy watching people react to this and seeing it slowly dawn on them that Sadness wasn’t trying to mess things up, she was instinctively doing her job.

Fun fact! When this movie came out I was visiting family in South Korea and I saw it with a couple of my cousins. I didn't know this until I watched it again in the U.S., but when shown in Korea Pixar changed the vegetable that Riley hates. In Korea, kids actually like broccoli, but HATE bell peppers. So when baby Riley refuses to eat her vegetables, she refuses to eat bell peppers. When Riley and her mom get pizza, there are bell peppers on the pizza. I think I read somewhere that this wasn't unique to Korea and Pixar actually did that for most other countries since kids' hatred for broccoli is not universal. Also, as an adult who moved 7+ times as a kid, I felt like this movie really encapsulated the emotional turmoil you feel and the struggles you have as a kid to effectively process those emotions. As the eldest sibling of 5 kids, I felt that it was my responsibility to act happy and excited about each move, but it was so draining and I wasn't giving myself time to process my sadness or fear. It turned into exhaustion which led to numbness and I had a really hard time feeling happy or sad. Like Riley, talking to my parents made things a lot easier, as they were compassionate and helped me talk through what I was feeling. There were some other neurological issues that started expressing themselves as I went through puberty, but that's a whole different story. Anyway, thanks for the commentary! I really enjoyed listening to it while doing work around the house!

Btw! Schools do call or email parents when the kids aren't in school in America. If the parents don't already arrange a scheduled leave, then it's marked as an unexcused absence. I was sick and didn't go to school and they emailed both my parents and I. For my cousin, since he is in middle school, they called and left a voicemail. Most kids hack the system and all provide their emails or phone numbers for their absences, though.
