The funny thing is there's still a story that makes sense, even though you don't see the emotions. There's a girl named Riley who grows up with her parents. They move to a new city. She doesn't fit in at school, because she's new, and gets into an argument with her parents, causing her to storm off into her room. She misses a goal in hockey, making her angry, and wanting to leave. She has a nightmare later that night, giving her the idea to go back to her hometown. She eventually realizes her mistake, and reunites with her parents, in tears because she misses home. Her parents agree, and says they miss home too. The best part is this makes a perfect story, and it would make a perfect Pixar short film.

Inside Out honestly feels better this way because it gives us room to appreciate Riley. It really reinforces the point made in the sequel that our emotions don't define us.

@@yay29823Don't get me wrong, I love the emotions. They all contributed to this movie. But ever since the sequel dropped, I realized I overlooked Riley. Hell, I wasn't even excited about her and only about her emotions until I watched the sequel. Like I said earlier, the point of the sequel was to not let our emotions define us. That helped me appreciate HER story.

Riley's parents are quite good at parenting. Of course they're not mind readers and thus limited in what they can do, but they're pretty much everything you can expect from caring parents.

I think the dad was a little quick to get angry with her when she was upset at dinner. He knew full well she would likely struggle in a new environment, especially at her age, and could've tried to ask her then what it was she needed. Of course, the fact that he didn't, makes it more realistic and shows that parents aren't perfect. Better still since they made sure to really talk it out with her in the end.

I'm not sure if this was what the writers implied. (Because frankly speaking I'm really kinda slow. 💀) But I always feel like the person themselves have some slight control over their emotions in their head. That's why throughout the movie, Sadness gets this strange urge to touch the core memories and has the power to change it suddenly. And then when Joy and Sadness are sucked out of HQ and Anger takes over, it's like their way of showing how being unable to express your Sadness, will make you end up expressing Anger in the end.

Honestly Inside Out is really a coming of age story that has been cut up into pieces and had all the emotion stuff fit in between. None of the little world inside Riley’s head is supposed to be literal, more a metaphysical representation of the emotional changes we go through as we grow up. Especially when having your whole life changed around so suddenly like Riley had.

The way that inside out portrays that moment of realization is beautiful throughout the movie Everything is so bright showing her positiveity through life and building up to the moment she runns away the colors grow increasingly more dull showing how she feels dull and depressed but after she realized it wasn't right to run away(when sadness came back) the colors brightened back up again because she remembers her parents and she knows they care (It also shows in her face just before she leaves)

Feels like Pixars short films and animated shorts. Doesn't have direct conversational dialouge more like an internal monolog type thing often reflecting emotions and events through sound and visuals. The shorts always to me feel like they have deeper metaphorical meaning than the movies.

Rewatching this hit really hard as someone who went through the same thing (minus the calm parents and no language barrier part) as riley and at about the same age too. Back when the movie came out I hadn't moved yet and I didn't remember what the movie was about up until now since It's been quite literally 9 years since it came out...

Such a heart-wrenching scene that I relate to so deeply, as someone who also moved away from her hometown at age 11. I’ll always love the first Inside Out for its depiction of this.

When I see it this way. I can see how Happiness was damaging Riley. She had always been putting a happy face for everything. Dad: “Where’s my happy girl” Mom: “Well you’ve stayed a happy girl...” She never communicated that she wasn’t well so she never received the attention she needed from her parents. And she allowed to be sucked up by her emotions to the point she couldn’t care less about her wellbeing.

12:58 before she bumps into the guy, She smiled even when she felt embarrassed. Our parents do something that we think it’s embarrassing, but it shows that they care enough not to care about the world around them, but focus on their child. We would need more parents like this. Not perfect parents, But ones that would love you without a second thought.

in this format, i can really take in Riley. Like, i kinda teared up at the end like i usually do but it was a bit diffrent because instead of viewing the story from her emotions point of view it’s through like Riley’s. which like i know that her emotions are apart of her and the entirety of the movie IS her perspective, but strangely this format makes me feel closer to her character more than anything. I noticed a lot of small details about her character i never noticed prior.

i kind of enjoy more this movie without the emotions part because it was meant to entertain the audience with silly adventure while also explaining how it works inside her brain, the story its more compelling to me as an adult now which is wow im an extremely hater to the new pixar and disney movies but this and the sequel are actually so nice and good, its actually emotional and well written both of these movies
