Step inside ‘Home of Holism’: the home and studio space of House of Grey founder Louisa Grey.
London-based design studio House of Grey’s Home of Holism was born from their desire to revolutionise the concept of the workplace to encompass all aspects of daily life. The space is an adaptive working studio for the House of Grey team and a tranquil home retreat for founder Louisa Grey. “Our new Home of Holism reveals where and how our founder lives and how we work together daily,” studio manager Jemma Horsfall says. “Here, people can experience ‘Circular Salutogenic Design’ and the House of Grey feeling for themselves.”
In this exclusive film series with Bauwerk Colour, Louisa Grey takes us on an intimate tour through her Victorian home in London.
“Circular Salutogenic Design is about creating interior spaces that allow humans to live in harmony with the planet and themselves,” Louisa says. The materials used in Home of Holism are conducive to this idea; they are non-toxic and sourced directly from the earth to promote groundedness, improve concentration and reduce stress. These materials were also chosen for their fundamental benefits, such as water resistance and heat generation, further enhancing the Circular Salutogenic nature of the design. “Living holistically means considering not only how materials look and feel but how they perform to keep a home or workspace running,” Louisa says.
House of Grey’s collection with Perth-based limewash paint company Bauwerk, ‘Silence’, features in Home of Holism, exemplifying how these kinds of materials are inherently good for human health. “Made by using a variety of natural bases, the collection provides a healthy alternative to widely available chemical-based paints,” Louisa says. “They have this very sympathetic and sensitive finish. The colour is just the most sublime colour; very calming,” she adds.
Louisa’s and, by extension, House of Grey’s ethos around work-life balance and how it influences our well-being are embedded in Home of Holism’s design. Like everyone around her, Louisa’s life is an amalgamation of many things - she’s a designer, a working mother, a business owner, a friend, a family member and a colleague. She based Home of Holism on this idea of a holistic life, aiming to reveal the full spectrum of her and House of Grey’s practice.
“We wanted to shape our own healthy workspace that went beyond aesthetics to enhance our daily lives,” Louisa says. “We aimed to create a comfortable home and work environment that people could look forward to coming into each day and leave feeling inspired and energised.” This stems from House of Grey’s rejection of ‘burnout culture’, a symptom of which can be the need to escape one’s day-to-day life. Instead, Home of Holism exists to show people that it is possible to build a life that you don’t wish to escape from. “I wanted to create a sense of just being - of stopping,” Louisa says.

At first, I didn’t like the white oak flooring in my new apartment but now these channels are making me love white Oak because everyone loves neutral colors and it does make you feel better about your space in my opinion I know everyone may not be a fan of neutral, colors, but it also depends on how your apartment is situated now I’m starting to appreciate soft , warm neutral colors in my apartment at 4:40 to 4:51 what a precious little thing😄🖤😄

"It was important for us to have the lowest impact in terms of how far the materials were gonna be travelling." Floors from Harley Street, windfallen ash from East London, plaster from Cornwall, but San Pellegrino from the fridge! If you're going to try and pretend you're saving the planet, at least drink water from the tap!

Thank you for your comment, to reassure you we have a quooker tap which houses hot, cold, filter and sparking water, the San Pellegrino was brought by a dinner guest who left it behind and I did not feel comfortable just throwing it away. I can assure you I personally do not buy bottled water but well spotted : -)

At the heart of Louisa's kitchen is an all-electric AGA eR7 in White. Louisa chose this model because it is fully controllable, allowing flexibility and limiting energy wastage, and it can be powered solely by sustainable energy. Having an electric AGA allows Louisa to use 100% renewable energy, something she feels really passionate about. In fact, it was the key factor in her choice of AGA model. Thank you, team est.
