PLEASE PRAY FOR SOUTH KOREA! South Korea is currently at a pivotal moment in its political history, grappling with influences that threaten its democratic framework. The country, officially known as the Republic of Korea, stands in stark contrast to its northern counterpart, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea. Despite these names, the political ideologies in both countries are markedly different, with North Korea following Juche, a form of Korean nationalism and self-reliance mixed with totalitarian rule, and South Korea practicing a form of democracy. However, the term 'democracy' itself has become a point of contention within South Korea. The Democratic Party, one of the major political entities in the country, has been criticized for policies that seemingly align more with communist ideologies than democratic ones. This irony is not lost on the populace, especially given the historical context and current geopolitical tensions involving neighboring China's communist regime. The situation escalated during the tenure of President Moon Jae-in, who was accused of harboring Juche sympathies and whose election was marred by allegations of fraud. Since then, concerns have grown that communist influences have permeated various aspects of South Korean society. In response to these critical issues, the current president felt compelled to declare martial law, signaling the severity of the crisis to the nation. Amidst this backdrop, a significant political awakening is unfolding across South Korea. Citizens of all ages are taking to the streets in support of their president, whose approval rating exceeds 52%. Despite this, the mainstream media, which often echoes the perspective of the opposition party, fails to adequately report the scale of public support. The underreporting of these large, vocal demonstrations highlights a profound disconnect between the narratives portrayed in the media and the reality on the ground. This growing divide is more than just a media bias; it represents a critical moment of change where the citizens themselves are becoming increasingly engaged and vocal, advocating for their views and shaping the nation's political future. The movement signifies not only a challenge to the prevailing media narratives but also a robust defense of democratic values in the face of rising authoritarian influences. This dynamic struggle underscores the complexity of maintaining a true democracy in a region fraught with ideological conflicts.

As a Korean at the age of 53, I had never ever imagined I would experience martial law in my life before the night December third. Of course I knew there was martial law in 1980, but I was just 8 years old at that time. I just saw some pictures and a few tv dramas of the time. So I actually didn't know what martial law is and what would happen if controlled by martial law. I can't explain how furious and nervous I feel now. I am willing to do everything I can to protect the democracy of my country. That's why I was one of the huge crowds in the rallies held in Seoul. It takes me almost 10 hours to get back and forth for the rallies. It doesn't matter because I LOVE my country, South Korea.

One of the best explanation by a Korean poster: "As a Korean, I would like to elaborate on worst things that dems in Korea have been doing that possibly lead to the martial law so far. (current parliament out of 300 seats, 180 seat is taken by dems which means they have 100% control over almost everything) 1) Refuse to update the law against spy: government wanted to update the law against spy to not only cover N.korea but also other countries with prime example being China as they could be working together. Dems have repeately refused to update this law. 2) Update the most absurd government budget every known: They reduced the budget of president's office, prosecution office and police office down by 100%, literally 0$. I'll explain the reasoning behind this on my next point. Not only that, They reduced budget placed for safety of ppl and wellbeing by substantial amount. 3) Most impeachments ever in the history of this country: You have to know abt Jae-myeong Lee (the leader of Dem party). He has been under numerous investigations for many years now. The list is very long but the most important ones are violations of election law, connection with gangsters, perjury, corruption and Remittance to North Korea. President Yoon really wanted to give him justice so he put lots of effort into Lee's investigation. Dems have Initiated impeachment proceedings against 22 government officials, and after they won the 180 seats in the parliament, they forcefully impeached 10 more ppl. The list included more than 7 inspectors, Minister of Public Administration and Security, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, Auditor General and Minister of Defense. Just to run down the country and protect Lee to make him the next president. 4) Connection with North Korea: Members of dem and MANY of labour party including higher ups (they are basically a team here in Korea) were actively caught spying for North Korea. Some of them actually got caught meeting North Korean party members secretly overseas. 5) Refuse to pass any law and objects literally anything that would benefit the country just for the sake of putting down Yoon's rating I understand Left and Right have different roles and idealogy but one thing that must be common is for the benefit of the country and the people. What dems in Korea have been doing is to literally run down the country just so that ppl would hate Yoon, thus win the next election or impeach him to gain power again." S. Korea being close to China and with a pro-US stance it's a good place to practice for China. What's happening in South Korea may eventually happen in the US. And actually it did happen in the US 2020 election. Election to favor Beijing Biden like it did with former president Moon Jae-in who is a China shill. Culprit in both cases? Communist China!

not sure where u get this source from but this sounds like something an American would write instead of a Korean. if u look back at the history of S.Korea in more detail and think about it, they have a long history of corruptions while being a Pro-USA and highly capitalistic society. Most Asian countries like China were pretty poor back so they could not possibly have any influence over S.Korea politics at that time apart from sharing the same anti-Japan sentiment due to what the Japanese did to them during WWII. you mentioned Jae-myeong Lee (leader of Democratic party) but here in S.Korea they are the opposition part. The one would declare martial law is President Yoon Suk Yeol and is right leaning political wing (Note that they do not have a Republican party so left and right wing logic of Americans may not apply accurately). Considering how fast the locals were able to stop the martial law and kick him out of office it is visibly clear that President Yoon is not very likeable so no sane Korean would ever support this guy. Another point u mention is corruption but lets revise the history a little and u will find corruption scandals like the scandal between the rich chaebol former CEO of Samsung and former president Park Geun-hye were well known in S.Korea and the around world if u hate the Samsung brand. All this happen while they were being Pro-USA so think about it before u try to sound u know Korean history or kissing up to USA government in a western media channel. Ohh btw...the US government also have multiple military bases around the world including S.Korea with the reason of PROTECTING S.Korea from the North yet when S.Korea almost became the new North Korea they were no where to be found... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

First one must read the Republic of Korea Constitution and see President Yoon was authorized to declare martial law in emergencies and times of war. The martial law was not like the past. In the short 6 hours it was directed at the National Assembly and not the people as in the past. People who came out were close to the guns of the military and not shot by the guns of the military as in the past. One would have to witness all that occurred prior to the declaration, the president's wife was setup, budgets that would allow the administration to investigate activities taking place in the nation was unilaterally cut, it was believed the election was tampered with, government information was hacked, impeachments, and the chief of the opposition party was indicted for illegally sending money to North Korea and other charges. The President complied with the Constitution, when he complied with the outcome of the National Assembly vote. The martial law was only 6 hours. Therefore, it was a lawful act, not rebellion or insurrection as claimed. The opposition party came to the Constitutional Court, they wanted to withdraw the rebellion charges but the whole complaint was based on rebellion. Figure that one out. The judges did not appear to be neutral. However, the lawyers for the President only used the law to diminish weak positions. The President need only justify his actions to protect the country as much as possible, at least the portions that are not classified.

I think it's important to make a distinction between the government vs. Korean people's attitude towards Japan. I disagree with the notion that the attitude towards Japan has been "improving" among young Koreans. It is rather the current government and its pro-Japan stance, along with its media sponsoring pro-Japanese sentiments and contents to sway their opinions. Any political belief that is counter to Japan is slowly becoming a taboo for this precise reason.

I'm very confused about the doctor strike. I replayed it twice. They said they make $220k USD annually, the highest in OECD countries. Yet they're protesting that they get paid low wages and work long hours, so much so that the Medical Union guy claims their initial wages (without stating if the initial wages are the $220k the narrator mentioned) are on par or lower than convenience store clerks and part-timers. But since the only number stated was the average salary of $220k, let's do the math: 80 hours a week for 52 weeks with a salary of $220k, in U-S-D mind you, works out to $52.88/hour. Either this was poorly edited, they're wildly ridiculous in their claims, or I need to move to South Korea and live like a queen with a mere part-time job that'll put me in the top 10% in the States alone. Someone please clarify that bit.

220K are attendings/consultants. The main bulk of any hospital is made up of the resident/'junior' doctors. Quite literally in 2020 the average fresh grad from med school in the UK would be making less than a barista per hour with longer hours and more responsibility. The 80h per week is never inclusive of on-calls. Also 12h shifts per day is what may written into the contract, but usually you'll find on-calls and the day team working shoulder to shoulder with the next shift because of sheer caseload. For reference? Monthly basic pay was ~£1800 per month for doctors out of Med school (with an ongoing and building student loan).

They are just wildly ridiculous in their claims. So no one is supporting their cause except the doctors themselves. This isn't the first time they've gone on strike, and they've been extremely hostile to any policy that tries to touch their wallets (division of medicine, increasing the number of doctors, etc.) and have done everything they can to frustrate every reform. The medical reform is probably one of the few good things Yun has done that has gotten public support, although his other mistake was not suppressing it earlier and letting them strike like this.

Pure greed. Their actions are selfish in that.. walking out means many patients couldn't be served.. and their resistance against increasing the Jr Doctor quotas means they also prevent/bottleneck any possibility of having more jr doctors to spread their workload across.

CNA Insider was probably unable to update w/ recent news but this was not a sudden declaration of martial law. It was carefully planned in advance but failed spectacularly due to a number of factors (irrational motive which nobody including the military could get behind, weather, swift response by lawmakers and the public, etc.). The military (particularly the Korea Defense Intelligence Command) received detailed orders by Yoon on who to detain/execute and had set up interrogation and detention centers months in advance. Yoon is well known to be a serious alcoholic who has set himself up in an echo chamber with a wife who believes in shamanism. You've got to be quite something if you can get 90% of the country to turn on you before you finished half your term. How did Korea end up here? (Probably applicable to a lot of Asian countries) Vet your politicians properly and don't vote for party - vote your conscience. Just because a person had a certain position or credential does not mean that person should be a politician or cares for the country. A single person can ruin a nation in less than three years. A single proper vote can stop that.

@charliepark1971

Yoon was a presecutor for ~30 yrs. His political arch-enemy, JM Lee is claimed to be the victom of Prosecutor Office’s power abuse. JM Lee has 4 confirmed criminal records and is currently in many different trials including corruption cases. JM Lee is also a strong leader of the Democratic party which is the majority party among the South Korean national law-makers. Despite being the president for 2.5 yrs, Yoon has been emasculted by JM Lee. Lee has passed numerous bills to impeach 22 of the government officials Yoon appointed. Lee has also passed bills in the Congress to start special prosecution investigation on Yoon’s wife, Gun-hee Kim. Yoon has been using his presidential previlege, a veto, to stop this from happening. Why is Lee so desparate to target Yoon’s wife? And if so innocent, why doesn’t Yoon just cooperate to investigation? It’s because there is a long history of the Democratic party trying to bully and demonize the First Lady Kim. Circa 2022, the First Lady was approached by a Korean man named Jae Young Choi. He approached her by saying he is her late father’s good friend. And then he gave her a $2,200 Dior bag. Despite her strong refusal, Choi forces and manages to leave a shiny Dior pouch in her office. Choi recorded all of this with a spycam on his watch. He even recorded a footage of himself buying this Dior pouch at a store. And one day released to media. South Korean people got enraged. They began to deem Kim as a bribe-taker, a corrupt, crooked person. Combined with this incident and many other attempts by the left-wingers to demonize Kim, for example refering her as “Julie”, an alias she used when she allegedly did prostitution. Obviously this is totally ungrounded fake news. She actually comes from a wealthy family. But these scandals were enough to make her the 2024 Korean Marie Antoinette. Yoon’s approval rate kept dropping as these fake news altogether successfully demonized Yoon and Kim. Yoon’s arch-enemy JM Lee has been using this as the justification of the 4 special prosectuion investigation bills on the First Lady. The interesting part here is that Jae Young Choi, the guy who planted and recorded the Dior bag to the First Lady, is suspected to be a North Korean spy. He’s been a semi public figure in Korean media and best known for his glamorizing of the North Korean dictators the Kim’s. He claims himself to be a pastor that frequently visits Pyeongyang. So long story short, although Yoon threw the biggest curveball to the world, it is also true that South Korea is being screwed over by a North Korean spy. This is why in his recent speech, Yoon used the word “anti-state” forces. Although usually a taget of mockery for being ungrounded conspiracy theory, Yoon has suspicions and animosity towards the General Election office too. On the other hand, JM Lee has strong fandom and he is the biggest prosepct for the next South Korean president if Yoon gets impeached in Q2 2025. Lee, with his stronger than-ever-before Congressional power (his party currently holds 190 out of 300 seats in the Parliament) has completely cut down the 2025 budget for Yoon’s presidential office and the Prosectuion Office a few weeks ago. This is all because the South Korean democracy is still growing and changing. Our constituion was last revised in the late 1980s. In the 60s-80s, the political power was on the executive branch, and we had two dictators. So when the constituion was written in the late 80s, they took away a lot of the power from the president and gave it to the lawmakers. Now Lee is fully exercising that right. Yoon said enough with the bullying from a criminal and declared martial law.
@chrisp1961
@chrisp1961 Ай бұрын
This view does not portrait the truth behind the Korean politics and the reason behind the Marshall law accurately. Yoon, as the commenter noted, had been a prosecutor for over 30 years and was the chief prosecutor, who President Moon appointed to prosecute then impeached Ex-President Park Geun Hye. The problem with the Korean prosecution service is that it has sole unchecked power to investigate, indict and not to indict any crime, real or fabricated. Too often the prosecutors used this unchecked power to fabricate crimes to extort from businessmen or eliminate political adversaries. It is well known that any recent retiree from high office can amass millions within a year of the retirement simply by making phone calls to his former subordinates on behalf of a criminal. Korea stock index is deeply discounted not because of the Cold War instability but the stock manipulation is rampant for the perpetrators can pocket so much more than they need to pay for these phone calls. During military dictatorship prosecutors collaborated with the military strongmen to crush opposition and protestors. As the nation became more democratic, there remained no system to check the enormous power of the prosecutors, who acted as a single entity and became ultimately corrupt. As Park Geun Hye was disposed of, President Moon, who rose to power inadvertently, appointed Cho Kuk as the Minister of Justice in an effort to curtail the powers given to prosecutors as all presidents before him wished to but failed. Alarmed by this prosecutors targeted Cho Kuk as their uptime enemy, and eventually jailed his wife with allegations of forging volunteer certificate to be used for a college application and him alleging his daughter’s scholarship award as a bribe. Evidences were fabricated, and not even judges could raise a flag afraid of becoming targets themselves. Meanwhile police investigation found Yoon’s wife, Kim Gun Hee, was involved in stock Price manipulations and profited from the proceedings, but the prosecutors drooped all her charges for only prosecutors can initiate indictments. Against all odds Democratic party and it’s leader Lee passed a law for a special prosecutor, but Yoon vetoed the bill; Korean presidents often faced similar prosecution, but no one ever vetoed a bill directly involving investigations on corruptions of immediate family members. Accusations on Yoon and his wife are abound including the latest of which his election as the president was also a result of meddling on public polls. The person who was responsible was recently arrested , surfaced were and among many evidences recordings of Yoon’s own voice directly linking him in election meddling. This fiasco drove Yoon not only in a very low public opinion but also under imminent criminal charges. The declaration of martial law was the last straw he needed to hang on.
@charliepark1971
@charliepark1971 Ай бұрын
@ While it’s true that historically the prosecutors have abused their unchecked power, a lot has systematically changed since the military dictatorship and such things rarely happen now. Cho Kuk was indeed a target by the prosecutors but I must clarify that the evidence against Cho Kuk and his wife were NOT fabricated. All of their charges were reviewed by different judges of the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. Some of the charges ended up getting cleared but a big majority had irrefutable evidences. To say all of these judges knowingly accepted the fabricated evidence in the fear of themselves being targeted by the prosecutors is an insult to them and the Korean judiciary system.

At NO POINT did she try to push the bag away, or protest the gift. The statement alone nullifies anything else you have written. A pity, since you wrote so much. About martial law. Basically South Korea is being attacked from within by The Opposition Party, North Korea and China. About the use of special forces. It was right out of a Kurosawa film. The president got a tip off from Kyrgyzstan high officials on the same day and Yoon, the president of S. Korea sent two groups, one "bad cop" and one "good cop" to two separate places. While the bad cops were doing their thing - about 100 forensic specialists entered another building. The forensic team knew exactly where the servers were and was able to copy the hard discs into an image and leave quietly while the "bad cops" were getting much of the attention. Notice no one was shot or hurt or arrests made. There was communication between special forces members to NOT bring ammo - the weapons were empty. 7.62 rounds would shred people and you saw no blood. Most of these liberals forget that S. Korea is still at war with North Korea and over the years North Korea agents have committed assassinations and terrorist activities. "North Korea has a history of state-sponsored terrorism against South Korea, dating back to the 1950s. The most notable attack is the hijacking and bombing of Korean Air Lines (KAL) Flight 858 in 1987. Two North Korean agents, posing as students, hijacked the plane and forced it to divert to Pyongyang, where it was blown up, killing all 115 people on board." Another is the police have known not to take orders from the president's office. So, the military was sent. How would they know who was in the building with rampant North Korean sympathizers and spies everywhere. I reckon they needed that many hours to make an image of the servers. So far after the initial forensic they found communications and millions sent to North Korea. And even traced Huawei and Tencent that led to China. It will take a few more days for the forensic to finish and then they will publicly release their findings. Both North Korea and China were rigging elections in South Korea - this was what led to the martial law. Earlier this year North Korea flew 5 drones over Seoul and one even flew over the president's residence. A Chinese student was found to fly a drone near USS Theodore Roosevelt docked off Busan. The authorities found 5 minutes of video from end to end of the ship. For those who supported the coup from the North were duped.

To ensure police do not enter South Korea’s National Assembly in the future or interfere in legislative matters, there are several mechanisms and practices that can be implemented or reinforced, rooted in constitutional law, institutional norms, and public oversight. Here’s how this can be achieved: 1. Strengthen Constitutional Protections for Legislative Independence - The South Korean Constitution already guarantees the independence of the National Assembly. These protections could be reinforced through: - Explicit Prohibitions: Clear laws preventing police or other state forces from entering the National Assembly except in extraordinary, well-defined emergencies. - Judicial Oversight: Require any decision involving police entry to be reviewed and authorized by a court to ensure compliance with democratic principles. 2. Legislative Rules and Protocols - The National Assembly can adopt or strengthen internal rules to explicitly prohibit unauthorized entry by police or external forces. - Protocols should outline: - Conditions under which police may request access (e.g., imminent threat to public safety). - Procedures for approving such access, involving high-level officials or independent oversight committees. 3. Independent Security Force - The National Assembly could maintain its own independent security force to manage internal matters and handle potential threats without relying on the national police force. - This force would be accountable solely to the Speaker of the National Assembly or a bipartisan oversight body. 4. Civic Oversight and Media Transparency - Encourage transparency and public accountability by: - Broadcasting legislative proceedings and maintaining open communication with the media. - Ensuring public awareness of any attempts to involve police in legislative affairs, deterring undue interference. 5. Penalties for Unauthorized Entry - Establish strict penalties for unauthorized entry by police or government officials, reinforcing the principle that legislative spaces are sacrosanct. • Disciplinary measures could also apply to legislators or officials who request or allow unlawful police presence. 6. Bipartisan Cooperation - Political parties need to work together to protect the integrity of the legislature, setting aside partisan conflicts to prevent misuse of law enforcement for political ends. - Bipartisan agreements can explicitly limit circumstances under which external forces may intervene in legislative processes. 7. Public Demonstrations of Commitment to Democracy - South Korean citizens are highly engaged in their democracy. Public support and mobilization can serve as a deterrent to actions that undermine democratic norms, including police overreach. By combining strong legal frameworks, institutional safeguards, and civic vigilance, South Korea can continue to protect the sanctity of its National Assembly and prevent unauthorized police intervention. This would help maintain trust in democratic institutions and uphold the rule of law.

This is the kind of comment that looks great on the surface but is load of hot bullshit of you look a little deeper. Also what happens if foreigners with 0 understanding of the cultural, political, and economic fabric of South Korea insert their opinion. In the past 4 years of Biden's presidency, South Korea has quietly been infiltrated by CCP sympathizers with roots in the Korean democracy movements of the 80's and 90's. Sounds too unbelievable. Sounds too illogical. But think about the ideals of those leftist student movements and is it really a surprise Leninist ideals appeals to the DPK? Look deeper. Start with the 2016 impeachment of President Park Geun Hye and the media portrayal of her actions during the Sewol ferry disaster. A dirty president, but the impeachment of a one-term duly elected president the right action? From that point, look at President Moon's record. Foreign policy with North Korea especially. And relations with China/India (more subtle but indicative). Posturing to secure South Korea neutrality in a potential war between nuclear powers, leaving Japan the only reliable East Asian ally capable of defending Taiwan and Southeast Asia from Chinese forces. On January 7, 2021, a resounding majority of Americans would have denounced President Trump's 2024 reelection bid. In three years, the country opened its eyes to the maddening deterioration of individual rights against the increasing power of the state. I do not like Trump. Or Yoon. But interestingly enough, I have never thought it necessary to choose what I liked. Because I can only choose the leader that will protect me and my right to be free from tyranny. Don't forget COVID.

The current president of South Korea has been fighting against the dictatorial opposition party for the past two years to uphold liberal democracy. He views resolving issues with the fraudulent election system as a critical measure. Recently, he declared martial law, intervened in the National Election Commission to gather significant evidence, and subsequently lifted the martial law. However, the opposition party used this as a pretext to file for impeachment. The leader of this opposition party has a criminal record with four prior convictions and is currently facing trial for various criminal charges. Despite this, he has been delaying the trial through all possible means and is using his party's lawmakers to disrupt constitutional order. His ultimate goal is to forcibly impeach the president, hold an early presidential election, and take the presidency for himself. This individual is a pro-North Korea and pro-China politician.
@DataMus

You make it sound like he was the one who lifted it. His hand was forced. He deployed military personnel to STOP lawmakers from veto-ing the martial law. A democratically protected activity. Seok Yul, the egghead, tried to use MILITARY FORCE TO PREVENT LAWMAKERS TO STOP THE VETO-ING. REPEAT. HE USED MILITARY FORCE. We are lucky that he failed and the unified desire for truth and democracy amongst the people prevailed. Could you imagine what kind of monstrosity he would have committed if he was successful ?

The leader of the opposing party has been sentenced guilty for sending money to N.K. enen under the U.N. prohibition. He is criminally guilty but he is not arrested. The money sent can be used for N.K. neuks and dictationship. I am afraid that S.K. could be ruled by politicians siding with N.K. agaist U.N. and the U.S.A.

I am surprised to see that some far-right activists have left very favorable comments for riot leader Yun. These activists believe that foreign people watching this video clip will rely on their comments and thus be convinced to have a positive impression of Mr. Yun. These activists do not know what martial law is. I firmly believe that these people who leave far-right comments here have never experienced martial law. I saw in 1987, when I was in my early 20s, how hard people had to fight in the streets just to get a fair election. If the martial law planned by Mr. Yun were to happen as he wants, the National Assembly of Korea would be closed and many people would fight hard in the streets to overturn the martial law. Mr. Yun and his ally would impose strict censorship on the press, and Korea would see and hear only what Mr. Yun wants them to see and hear. Under martial law, a new, illegitimate parliament formed by Mr. Yun himself would pass many laws that could restrict basic human rights. And Mr. Yun would surely try to extend his rule beyond the limits set by the Constitution in the name of eradicating anti-state violence. Anti-state force to Mr. Yun includes anyone who has a different opinion from Mr. Yun. South Korea would have fallen into an authoritarian system like the one in the 1970s if the attempt to declare the marital law had not failed. I am so sad not because Mr. Yun declared martial law, but because some Koreans who think they are only elite English speaking Korean really believe that Mr. Yun is the savior and martial law is indispensable. Please stop polluting this site with biased comments and please stop misleading foreign people who watch this video clip to understand Korea.

There’s no in-depth reporting on why Yoon Suk Yeol made this decision or what's happening within the Korean government. It doesn’t address what he meant when he mentioned other cabinet members being fired, nor does it explore the concerns about alleged communist sympathizers in the government. I’m not looking for reporting that pushes a particular narrative; I want a more thorough and objective investigation.

From a person who has lived in Korea for the past 12 years, I find it highly offensive that a foreigner who only watches mainstream media can automatically assume the protestors in favor of impeachment are in favor of democracy. Lee Jae Myung, if President Yoon's impeachment is confirmed by the courts, will implement policies that put American liberals to shame. To understand how this can be, first know that Koreans do not value individual liberty as much as America. Know that for most Koreans, democracy is prosperity and if the Chinese promise at the expense of freedom, right now a large majority of Koreans are willing to accept that deal. We wait for Trump. Musk. Or anyone who values the real meaning of individual freedom and human rights, not just the words the obfuscators use.
