M1 garand is the first really succesful and battle worthy semi auto rifle. I have a 1941 SVT40 and after having tried the M1 I've to say it is sturdier, smoother reloading, not fumbling with gas valves, and vastly superior sighting arrangment. It is a rifle that in a pinch, I would carry in combat today.
