It's actually like one hour and thirty minutes from San José. People (tourists and foreigners) confuse Alajuela with San José. The airport is located in Alajuela (not San José) even though it's called SJO. Source: I'm a local

I drove to the airport right after this visit and it only took me 30 minutes to SJO 🤷🏼‍♀️

The places that I would recommend would be in Arenal so probably a bit far from San Jose, although I am sure that there are many near the city or not far from!
