Inside Story - What triggered the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh?

Some have called it the 'frozen conflict'.
A long-standing dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
But fighting that began on Saturday is threatening to destablise the region. At least 30 soldiers from both sides have been killed.
It is the worst violence since a 1994 truce ended a war in which Armenian-backed forces seized the territory from Azerbaijan.
The region of Nagorno-Karabakh is predominantly ethnic Armenian, and placed under Azerbaijan control in 1922 by then Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin.
The Armenian population of this mountainous, landlocked enclave began a push for unification with Armenia.
And as the Soviet Union broke up, a full scale war began in 1991.
The Armenians took control of Nagorno-Karabak in 1994 - after the deaths of around 30-thousand people.
So, what’s the impact of this renewed tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan?

Azerbaijan tried to invade and raise their flag in the capital of Artsakh, Stepanakert, by April 24 (the day of the Memorial of the Armenian Genocide) as an ultimate slap in the face. But in four days their entire blitzkrieg offensive failed miserably. They sent soldiers who fought in the ranks of ISIS to scare us, didn't work. They used high-tech foreign weaponry, didn't work. They were cowards and sent ethnic minorities to fight, didn't work. Azerbaijan isn't a homogeneous country like Armenia, it has Lezgins, Avars and Talysh folks that don't want to go to war. The state police of Azerbaijan brutally cracked down on these people who didn't want war and they enlisted them bu the thousands so they can fight against Armenians so they can build up their hatred towards Armenians who are just defending themselves. This meets the criteria of a minor genocide. Azerbaijan is a country which runs on fierce Armenophobia, so much so that being called Armenian in Azerbaijan or being accused of having an Armenian origin is enough to give a person the right to take you to court and sue you. Just imagine that. This is an inhumane country which decapitates the bodies of dead soldiers and parades them on social media to the amusement of its own retarded people. The soldiers who committed these war crimes get the highest commendations afterwards. This is what we, the Armenians, are up against ladies & gentlemen

Real Azerbaijan use to exist and locate in Northern Iran where over 20 million Azeris live right now. The current Azerbaijan is a fake state which created in 1918 by Lenin right after Russian revolution of 1917. Over 90% ethnicities in Soviet Azerbaijan historically have nothing to do with Iranian Azeris. Nagorno Karabach which historical Armenian name is Artsax forced into newly created republic of Soviet Azerbaijan. The USSR does not exist anymore. All republics declared independence, so the Nagorno Karabach declared it's independence as well. That is not just typing and talking but there are tons of documents which proved and presented to UN. No one can deny that even current Azerbaijan government.

@@MrMturko44 The name of that region is Artsach and if you were alive before 1917 you should have heard that name for sure. Beforer Russian revolution the territory of current republic of Azerbaijan use to have many separate regions of different Caucasian ethnic groups called Caucasian tribes. Soviets abolished all those regions and created one Azerbaijan Republic and placed also Artsach in that newly created republic. In 1920 Nachichevan was Armenian as well but over there Turks successfully wiped out Armenian population same way as they did from Kars and Mush in 1915. By looking on historical facts and even on small timeline in this post you can clearly figure it out who is threatening whom and for how long. As an addition of my post I should remind you that Turks are nomads from Mongolo-Tatarian remnants tracing from Mongolia to Anatolia by promoting destruction and death to many nations and looks like in 21st century their goal remains same.

Erhan Kater, first off let me apologize for Samuel Vardoyan's uncivilized behavior, then let me tell you a couple of facts you should know, Karabakh is not only populated by Armenians but also houses over 3000 Armenian historical monuments, whereas there are 30 Muslim monuments there. Paper and international community is too overrated, a fact is a fact even if everybody denies it and a lie is a lie even if everybody believes it, Armenians ruled Karabakh ever since 400BC and even Azerbaijan's Wikipedia page admits that, seriously, check that out. That being said, Azerbaijan came to existence in 1918 thanks to dictator Stalin's decision, which complicated a lot of things. When Soviet Union broke down Karabakh declared itself as an independent country, that's when not even Azerbaijan was a sovereign country, they wouldn't have done that if Azeris didn't treat them like dogs and if they didn't have the numbers in people to do that there, like you said, it's a very complicated issue here. But, you can't trust YOUR and YOUR NATION's rights to the international law, would you trust the protection of your own house to the mayor if a thief showed up at your doorstep? Let's say you do that, what if they fail to help you out? Would you give up? Would you watch the thief sit and enjoy your house while you're living in poverty? The international community failed us so many times that not only we lost land, but lost millions of lives in the result. Trust me, we wouldn't fight for something that we didn't think was 100% rightfully ours, we value each life much higher than Azerbaijan seems to value theirs. And there are clear 4 resolutions (822, 853, 874, 884) adopted by the United Nations Security Council which CLEARLY demands armenians to leave occupied Azerbaijan territories IMMEDIATELY and UNCONDITIONALLY. These resolutions allow Azerbaijan to defend its own territory and Azerbaijan hasn't done anything ILLEGAL, since they are inside their territory which is INTERNATIONALLY known as Azerbaijan terriroty. Reading this comments section as an ethnic Armenian is very sad. This isn't a one sided problem, its an issue of giving back Nagorno Karabakh back to Armenia (where it belongs). However, Armenia should be considering reaching a permanent peace through conceding some of the land which is not part of NKR back to Azerbaijan, not all of it of course. This way, Armenia (and Azerbaijan) can economically benefit, and have an oil pipeline running through their country. It would also make both countries safer without war. I unfortunately have to say that Mr Papadapoulos is full of hatred towards Turkey which did not surprise me as understood from his surname. Ngorno Karabagh was put under Azerbaijan s soverignty by Stalin as an autonomous region , that is partially correct , but none of the guests have mentioned that Stalin at the same time has elongated Armenian territories to the south till the Iranian border by granting Azeri soil to Armenia , with the aim of preventing Turkey to become a full neighbor of Azerbaijan and beyond. He also deported the Meskhetian Turks of Georgia living along the Turkish border to Kazakhstan ,an act which very few westerners even remember. Nevertheless , whatever has happened in the past should not be an obstacle for all the peoples of this region to have friendly relations. I think all the countries of the region should find the way out to have friendly relations and stop primitive hatreds of centuries , if they want to prosper in peace .I think Mr Putin was the only person to prevent further bloodshed , and one way or another , he has solved the problem very wisely , at least temporarily .

Dear Al Jazeera, please do a bit of research before discussing the topics. For your knowledge, the current battle is happening in the internationally recognized territory of Azerbaijan. By saying international recognition, I mean recognition by every single United Nations member state, yes including Armenia, as not doing so should result in tons of sanctions. But how that region ended up being completely Armenian populated? Because 30 years ago, Azerbaijani families living there were violently forced out through physical torture and armed brutality. Both countries have been negotiating on the region’s status since then with no result because the current status quo benefits Armenia, and particularly Russia to keep both nations under control. The conflicts stem from incorrect borders! The borders of Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia are all wrong. This is based on the following; - The entire region was ruled by the Ottoman, Persian, Russian Empires. - The treaty of Turkmenchay caused forced migrations, and changed the border of Iran and Azerbaijan. So yes, International Law recognizes NK as part of Azerbaijan because of the principle of nation-states. It puts all states under one umbrella, irrespective of whether your borders are correct or not. A good example; The entire Africa has incorrect borders, yet all of the states are internationally recognized. This is a clear paradox. The law is there, but the source of that law is fuzzy. a) Davit Garedji Monastery is historically part of Georgia, yet it's legally under Azerbaijan. b) The Iran/AZ border is clearly incorrect - stemming from the Treaty of Turk. To show the craziness of your borders; The monasteries in NK, seem to have been built in the wrong country then. Christianity spread west to Armenia and not east to Baku. I don't know of many countries that have the same make up, i.e. you have the religious buildings, but the people don't follow that religion. Christians count for less than 3% of the demographic. Nevertheless, AZ won the war, and in impressive fashion. Years from now, Azerbaijanis might realise that they fought a war for a territory that MIGHT not have been theirs to begin with. Where I will agree - the IDPS from the 7 regions have the right to go home. Armenia was/is 100% wrong there.

You should understand that all the conflicts in the territories of the former USSR countries have been organized, orchestrated and sponsored by Russia with the only aim not to let those states to run out of the orbit of Russian influence. It is their lovely way of conducting business. Seeing Russia as a beneficiary for perpetuating the conflict because it sells arms to both sides is an incredibly short sighted analysis. It wouldn't take long for a reasonable person to look at the types and amount of arms sales from Russia to both sides of the conflict to realize that the cost to benefit factor of keeping these two nations as arms clients would be remarkably far below the benefits Russia could attain in a larger scale of geopolitical game in caucuses' region specifically and at a larger scope of political game internationally. This analysis of presumed benefit from selling very few and very outdated arms to both sides as some hidden nerve point that somehow causes Russia to perpetuate the conflict is extremely infantile and a sign of inadequate understanding of cultural and socio-economic contexts Russia is entangled with in both countries to the conflict. Even if you exclude the larger picture of the geopolitics and center just on the socio-economic, political and historical ties Russia has with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, you would be a complete fool to arrive at the conclusion that Russia is somehow the beneficiary because of the ongoing arms sales relationship. On the surface it may intuitively appear as something that makes sense but that's just that - scratching of the surface. A true scholar with any weight to their perspective, would not be satisfied with the mere "follow the money" principle. One has to also analyze how much of the money we are looking at and the worth of such economic connection on a larger scale of the geopolitical chessboard.

Shame for Al Jazeera. All three persons are defending the Armenian point. All the subtitles are only in defence of Armenians. Well, I am really fed up with the claim that as if Nagorno Karabakh was Armenian territory and sometime gifted to Azerbaijan by Stalin. First, it is bullshit. The word Karabakh is itself Azerbaijani word, meaning black garden. Can you imagine that Armenians called their territory by Azerbaijani name? Second, if even to assume that it is a true fact, so why you blame Russia for conducting a war against Ukraine? Russians also claim that Crimea was a part of Russian territory, ceded to Ukraine by the Soviet leadership. And it is really true, the undisputable historical fact, which you cannot say about Karabakh. So, why you don't back Russia in their war against Ukraine? Third, if that's a case, so why only one nation, the Armenians should have a right to return the territory, once, as they claim, belonged to them. Just incorporate into the international treaties the right of every nation to return its historial territories. Let the Turks to reestablish the Ottoman Empire, allow the British to restore their empire, eradicate the US, just because some 400 years ago they did not exist. Why the hell only one nation is to be entitled to such a privilege?

+Ilyas Guliyev First of all there is region in Armenia called Cheremushki so based on your mentality that must be historicaly Russian land, right? Also the name Karabach replaced by Persian Chan during Iranian ocupation of Armenia in 18th century and the name before that was Artsach. Do you need more info, or that is enough. Entire Iranian history books are clearely saying that, so what is your problem.

Translation: Ancient times= Past 100 years for Azeri people. For other people Ancient times means 1000's of years ago. Karabagh name is Artsakh and it's been our land for 1000's of years. So, please stop talking about ancient times.
