Bought many Michelin tires in 40 years. Motorcycles, sports cars, minivans. Never disappointed, they were at the upper price range but handled the best and were good against punctures. All were made in their own factories not outsourced like a lot of big brands do now. I have Michelin defender T&H on my honda odyssey now, best you can get for that application.

As an exercise in exacting design and manufacture, the landing gear mechanisms for large aircraft are things of beauty. Totally under appreciated by most of the flying public. That 777 main gear assembly seen at 07:37 is, in my view, a work of technological art.

If you’ve ever landed in an airliner, thank the people who designed, and fabricated these marvels. It’s unreal the amount of force these tires have to endure during their short life.

I am thinking we at A/A were getting around 200-230 landings out of our Good Year tires and the max retread was 2-3 not sure on that part

300,000 flight hours on the 787 engine cannot be correct. Aircraft are typically retired at less than 100,000 hours. My guess is 40,000-60,000 hours top on an engine. We changed our engines every 20,000 hours or less

20,000 hours on wing is pretty exceptional for an engine. You may want to check your numbers. 300,000 hours is about 34 years.

It's good that we, the public are allowed to see the strenuous testing of Landing Gear for Aircraft on Videos like this, it gives People the confidence to get on an Aircraft & get off safely, but it still beggars belief that Planes the size of the Ukraine's Antonov, Boeing's 777 etc can take-off & land with Tons of Cargo time & time again with ease, very good Video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Prior to retiring, I spent 40 years in aviation as both a maintenance technician and pilot and the 300,000 hours between overhauls got my attention too. I think whoever wrote the script for her to read needs to go back and check the engine specs ...

Google does confirm it can cost up to $6000 for a single commercial plane tyre and even less depending on which plane tyre. Seeing planes have between 6 to 18 tyres, it really adds up really fast.

Well let’s see…40 hrs a week x 52 weeks in a year=2080 hrs. 300,000 % 2080= 144 yrs. Sounds spot on to me.

I remember we had problems with retreads from two different manufacturers for medium sized aircraft. We had to collect the damaged wheel sets and ship them to each manufacturer. I think in the end the DOM insisted on no more retreads. It was pretty costly as the tires were not high on cycles and sometimes damaged wheel assys and brakes.

Serviced or replaced every 3000 take off and land cycles. this is about 4/5 years flight time, but they do have minor maintenance and services in between.

Routinely they check those every 10k hours or like 3k cycles, give or take depending on a plane. With expendables replaced like pumps and so on. 2 years should be fair to say.

Louisville used to have one of the biggest aircraft tire maintenance facilities in the United States. Hundreds of workers changing airplane tires all day. But the Aircraft Maintenance Union would protect even the laziest employees. Finally, the customers got so tired of the Union that they moved the company to Brazil. One guy told me that you didn’t even have to do anything at the company. Just show up.

Each engine weighs 8.5 tonnes. Imagine the thrust it needs to provide just to lift itself. Then add the fuselage wings a hoard of people and jet fuel

I don't believe the engine rebuild hours is correct (around time stamp 10:20) as 300,000 hours is a little over 34 years, when planes are looking at retirement. I'd hope the engines were rebuilt more frequently.

I worked as a helo mech for 5 years and $6000 sounds too low of a price for some reason. Some very basic "aviation grade" equipment/hardware easily exceeds that cost

Touching down safely is far more important. As such the treads are designed with the biggest threat in mind, aquaplaning. The cost of replacing a tyre is pennies compared to losing control. Or not being able to stop/ rolling off the runway.

@m r when the wheels hit the runway and you see that smoke coming off them, that causes a 'flat spot' You only have to watch a F1 race to see how bad that is for a tire. A simple electric motor can rotate the wheel to match the speed of the landing plane, thus eliminating 'flat spot' at the point when the wheel hits the runway?

- why don't they spin the tires up to speed before landing? -you could do it with such a tiny little motor - then you wouldn't have the tires wear out as fast, and you wouldn't have to scrape clean the runway / runway lights all the time

The weight of the equipment and cost would not be worth it. And more mechanical failure points, those wheels weigh hudreads of lbs. A motor to get them up to speed would need to be huge, and one per a wheel, 16 wheels and 2 forward wheels. The added cost of maintenance and weight would cost more than just replacing the tyres Landing safely is the priority. Furthermore, most ware on the wheel is done when taxiing on the ground, not necessarily from the landing

I was a crew member on C 141s In the Air Force .. 20.000 hrs was about it for a jet transport . 300.0000 hrs .. ?? That was the days of Columbus.. pay attention to the facts your given lady.

It's a trailing cone with an atmospheric sensor on a tether. It is used on new aircraft when in flight testing for certification.

If Michelin is willing to recap a casing for a commercial aircraft (staking their reputation in doing so) application. I will be happy to know it's their recap my life depends on. People assume new is best. I disagree. New items can fail and do fail. They totally check that casing out to make sure it is all good before recapping it. Now that can be better than new because it unlike new has been proven to be good. To me that makes it better than new. Michelin are the best they know what they are doing.

Did anyone remember seeing these massive tires at the Pentagon on 911 ? How about the 2 giant 10 foot engines ? How about the 2 giant airplane wings ? How about the airplane fuselage ? Any dead bodies ? That's because it was a missle that hit the Pentagon fired from an American Air Force Pilot flying an American Air Force Plane ! That dude at the end was the guy signing off the various jobs so he is responsible for all those people flying in it flying safely, he has normally years of experience and a huge amount of training, so not the easiest job in the world one of the hardest.

@@StarrDust0 the guy is a licenced aircraft engineer , type rated probably A,C,&E rated, courses that are not easy to pass and expensive to pay for and as I say he is RESPONSIBLE on his signature for that aircraft being released to service, I doubt from your post whether you actually know what the word responsibility means but try googling licenced aircraft engineer and you might get an inkling of what actually happens before an aircraft can fly

Not 300,000 hrs. More like 20,000 eng. flight hours hrs.(EFH) on average, for wide body jets (long haul). For narrow body jets(usually short haul) , eng. flight cycles (EFC) rather than EFH may determine overhaul time.

I think they meant that the turbines are good for 3,000 hours, not 300,000 hours as 300,000 hours is equivalent to 34.2 years. I know that modern turbofans are good, but I don't think that they are that good.
