So, I just googled Clarissa because I remember her reporting from Ukraine and speaking pretty good Russian. And now, here she is speaking Arabic! After doing some research, I found out that she also speaks French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and even a bit of Mandarin! That is amazing! CNN hit the jackpot by having her as a reporter!

Yeah, Russian and Arabic languages are indeed needed for her. She covered those people a lot. Not sure why she studied French, Italian, and Spanish though 🤣

I am Lebanese. No Fareed you’re not an expert in this region. Syria is not similar to Iraq. You are dead wrong. You are comparing apples to oranges. They’re not going to revert to tribalism or ethnicities. Syria is now free of Iranian influence and the rule of a ruthless dictator who between him and his father ruled for 54 years. Syria has huge potential in this region. Its people are not extremists and its society is multicultural. They will revert back to their nature which an accepting, diverse and open nation and will embrace its Arabic heritage. It will take time but they will rebuild the country and have a new beginning.

I do hope that you are correct. History, sadly including Lebanon, teaches us otherwise. Egypt, Yemen, Libya, Iran, Iraq, ….. it’s a long list…. Afghanistan, and, for that matter, the Balkan’s in the 1990’s as they torn themselves to bits. But, we are all hopeful that Syrians can create a free and prosperous society for themselves, their children, and their grandchildren.

The simple compassion that Clarissa shows to that woman in the start, a simple gesture of holding her hand, says a lot about Clarissa and how that gentle bit of human contact is so important in these times. You can tell from the fiery determination of these Syrian civilians to find their loved ones, they will dismantle the entire prison with hammers, stones and their bare hands if they need to, to find their family and friends.

@@inthendwealldie I only speak English and French. Admittedly, subsequently picking up a little Italian was fairly easy when working in Hotels near the border, and I can understand some Spanish now, purely through osmosis. But learning Romance languages, a Slavic language, Arabic AND Mandarin is bonkers dedicated and for someone who also travels, writes and keeps abreast of foreign affairs, well-you're definitely part of the Big Brain Club, no doubt.

US inmates earn an average of $28/month. “Prisons function as plantations. The USA has 25 percent of the world’s prison population, 2.3 million people. Forty percent of them, by the way, have never been charged with physically harming another human being, and we’re less than 5 percent of the world’s population. “Approximately one million of these incarcerated men and women work for profit-making corporates in prison sweat shops. They can’t organise, they can’t protest their working conditions. Indeed, if they do they’re immediately sent to solitary and these corporations don’t pay into social security, so they’ll get out after 40 years and have nothing although they’ve worked 40-hour weeks for most of their lives.
