I agree that it's very impressive! 85 metres is pretty nuts for a wooden building. Hell that's more than 30m taller than Vancouver's (which is wood and concrete) and nearly 3x the Treet

When I visited the Empire State building, the craziest thing to me were the windows on the top floor. The window frames were wooden and you could tell very old. You've probably seen similar window frames in older buildings that were 1 or 2 floors high, except here we were on the 80th or 90th floor. It took me back in time, imagining how it must have been for people working in this building in the 1930s, cracking a window open at a slant for fresh air.

My first trip to the Empire State Building was in 1970 when I was a young boy. When I got out of the Yellow Cab, my mother said, "Look Up!." If she hadn't put her hand behind me, I would have fallen over backwards.

3:00 and 3:40 - if you ever visit the Empire State building, one of the most striking features are the window frames. You can see they've got that very old early 20th century style to them you might be familiar with if you've ever been in an older building, but you're >80 stories up! It gives you a feeling of just how old this building is and how impressively massive it is for the time it was built because you won't find windows like that that high almost anywhere else on earth.

Glad they gave this grand lady a facelift. I went up to the observation deck in 2008, noticed it was much like the rest of NYC. Extremely ambitious in its day but never maintained like it should have been. Place had that NYC layer of grime on it, noticed deferred maintenance in that the building still had its original double hung, aluminum sash single pane windows. Which of course were leaking.

Question about the Empire State Building. When you go to Wikipedia it has the Empire State Buildings hight at 1,250 and listed as the 7th tallest building in NYC after One World Trade Center, Central Park Tower, 111 West 57th St, One Vanderbilt, 432 Park Avenue and 30 Hudson Yards. However, it says if you count the Empire State Buildings antenna it's the third tallest building in NYC standing at 1,454. Only shorter to One World Trade Center and Central Park Tower. Why isn't the antenna counted in its overall height? The antenna is part of the building right?

I worked there in the 90's. Always freaky when the old school window washers strapped in and climbed out the windows. The bathrooms needed an upgrade back then, hope that's included too.

Otis was originally in Yonkers, NY. As a Rye, NY resident having commutted to Grand Central Terminal over a 30-year period and now a Chelsea, Manhattan resident since 2004 I've never been to the Empire State Building. Go figure.

I have to wonder whether the increased energy efficiency, hasn't come at the expense of its fire safety. Do the new materials support combustion? And, if they DO combust, do they release toxic fumes?
