When Ray hosted the show I was 12..& as a young kid..I thought he was cute. And he brought something to the show..that just isn't the same now..My teacher told me in high school..that he had died-I couldn't believe believe it!! I liked Ray as the host..R.I.P Ray, 🕊 🙏

Ray Combs was the first host I remember. I remember watching the show as a little kid on CBS and also on WWOR 9. I also loved the show Family Challenge he hosted. It was around that time I heard he killed himself. It was so tragic. He definitely could have gone on to greater things. And would have been a perfect host for The Price Is Right.

I remembered Ray Combs from seeing Family Feud in the early 90’s. He seemed like a happy and jovial guy who, to me, was the best host at that time. Steve Harvey is probably the funniest overall host but he doesn’t have the charm that Combs had. I guess what happened with Ray is proof that someone can look happy on the outside but can be barely holding on. It only takes a couple of bad things happening to push people into doing awfully sad things. RIP Ray Combs.

Richard Dawson was charismatic (and a bit creepy...), but Ray? Ray was full of energy! His young soul absolutely fit the needs for a great game show host. Had he not take his life, I and a few other people can see him as a good replacement for Bob Barker on the Price is Right (sorry Drew!)

As usual Facts Verse presents not nearly all the facts. Combs was under heavy financial distress which included his home in foreclosure, and his marriage had ended in late 1995. He also felt pigeon-holed as a game show host and wanted other opportunities in entertainment. His career, finance, and family breakdowns were too much for him to bear, sadly. RIP

@@crowmedicine4520 What a heartless person you must be. You have NO IDEA what it is like to be anyone but yourself. Thousands of people struggle with real depression not some made-up sadness, but chemical imbalance which makes it nearly impossible to 'learn' as you say to overcome things. And who ever labeled struggles as an excuse? That's like saying a person with broken legs cannot walk a hundred miles in a day. What's their 'excuse?' No, it's a logical REASON that they cannot.

In July 1994, Combs was involved in a serious car accident. He sustained an injury in one of his spinal discs, leaving him in severe and continuous pain. Combs also struggled with financial problems after the failure of two of his comedy clubs (Caddy Combs and the Cincinnati Comedy Connection) and his home in Hamilton, Ohio, went into foreclosure. In September 1995, he separated from Debbie, his wife of 18 years (with whom he had six children). The couple attempted to reconcile, but later refiled for divorce. Combs made several attempts to resurrect his television career. He taped a pilot for a talk show called The Ray Combs Show, but it was ultimately not picked up. Combs also hosted Family Challenge on The Family Channel from 1995-96, and made a number of appearances on the Game Show Network. On June 2, 1996, at around 4:10 a.m., hospital personnel discovered Combs hanging by his bed sheets in the closet of his room. He was taken to the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, aged 40. His death was ruled a suicide.

@@FactsVerseI really feel ray combs got screwed over. He got unfairly blamed for the show's declining ratings. It was the change in the show format that led to the decline. They really did him dirty.

@@FactsVerseRichard Dawson wanted Nipsy Russell to take over Family Feud. I believe that he just passed away or was having health problems and couldn’t.

I never knew that if that was true. But Mark Goodson wanted nothing to do with Richard anymore, but when Mark passed, his son took over production and did not care for Ray. So he unfairly cut Ray loose and brought back Richard against his father's wishes.

@@PlayaPotna1984 It’s also rumored that Ray had issues with Howard Felscher who was also the producer when Dawson hosted, but hearing that made me think was it really all Dawson’s issues? Be cool to hear what other staff members from back then remember.
