In a year that has seen some high profile caddie-player relationships come to an end, we hear from the likes of Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay, Jordan Spieth’s right-hand-man Mike Greller and Rory McIlroy on the role of the caddie

I caddied for a LONG time. Not by choice, but, whenever times were bad, the club allowed me to come back and caddy. Those people were kind and generous to me for many, many years. I will always remember that. As mentioned in other comments, we DO play a role, we ARE a PART of the game. (and that is said with the utmost humility). One Saturday morning, I am out, doing my round with a group of guys I had gotten to know over the years. They were all "get out of the house" golfers, they got together to be with their buddies more than anything else. I think the best player had an 18 handicap. Anyhow, standard par 5, my guy shanks it right, and winds up in a bunker on the right side. He'd been there, I'd ben there, we ALL had been there. Nothing new, and I am pretty confident that IF he was thinking about his score, he was already resigning to a snowman. He is in the trap, sand is wet, and packed hard (early morning). Ball is sitting up loud and proud. Between him and the hole, is a LOT of real estate, a LOT of lumber, (and probably a LOT of bad shots). Looking to the left, the lip of the bunker is 25 or 30 yards away, it's LOW, and if ONLY he could shank the ball.... I told him to take his driver, and swing away. "But, it'll go out! I'll nail that house!" "No, no you won't, don't worry about the house- it's not there anyways..swing away!" Now, his friends are looking. They know he is not a great golfer, HE knows it too. "But, what if I bust my club?" "Jeff- this is no different that the matt you hit off of this morning on the range. Ball is sitting up high, the sand isn't going to catch the club...swing away, you can do this!". So, he goes in there, and swings away. That ball took off out of there like a GD rocket. We ALL thought "oh, crap, he hit it straight! It's gonna hit the house across the fairway...", and then, that infamous shank took over, and that ball trailed off to the right, just like danm near every shot he hit. It was easily one of the best shots he ever hit. He came out of that bunker, and he looked like he could have taken on the world. His 3rd shot was actually ON the green, but, then, he 3 putted..what can you say) As we were wrapping up- his friends ALL made sure to tell him- Jeff- PAY the man! (and he did take care of me). He asked me how in the world I had known to try that. Told him I had been there two weeks ago on a monday morning. (I failed to mention I almost hit that house). I cannot take any credit for that shot. He made the shot. I was just there as the caddy. I was really and truly happy for him, which is something you cannot put a value on.

14 year caddy at Augusta National. You'd be amazed how much players lean on us. Nothing made me feel better than looping for a great guy and him sinking 50 footers with my reads. I mean, yes, I am a caddy, but Im still in touch with so many past players and its something they never forget. Not many courses have caddies, much less single-bag caddies
