An exhibition celebrating the work of French fashion legend Christian Dior has opened at the National Gallery of Victoria this week. Lateline's Emily Stewart caught up with Svetlana Lloyd, who worked for the designer as a house model in his Paris showroom in the 1950s.

Dior were the only couture house that paid overtime, that really says something about what kind of man Monsier Dior was!

i believe this lady is far more sophisticated than the runway models nowadays, she has class oozing out from her. AND SHE dealt directly with Monsier Dior himself.

It was a different time when being an adult carried great cachet. Nowadays we are crippled by the Twitter, Instagram, Facebook mindset where dumbing oneself down and trying to be a perpetual teenager is prized above all else. Besides, models are made to be seen, not heard.

Wow hearing her opinion about the Duchess of Windsor is so classy and tasteful even though she could just say the *B word to sum it up but still, ladies in this era could publicly remark their NASTY opinions tastefully hahaha

yes what a nasty person, not a lady ever, peed allover the place in the end, the paths of glory lead but to the grave, from Richard Burtons accounts they were a truly dreary sad couple.

Facinating to hear this. Glad she got out of fashion to do something she really loved. Fashion doesn't always equate to style, but she has bucket loads of the latter.

Social life was considered prostitute? What did she say? Yes she needs to tell more!!
@glennvannijevelt1133
@glennvannijevelt1133 6 жыл бұрын
That’s not what she said. She said modelling was considered prostitution, hence her social life was very limited. In Paris no prostitute can have decent social life. It is a very snobbish society. But courtesans, on the other hand, have the BEST social lives!

I'm not really interested in the cabine-models of the Couture houses of the 1950s but more in the mannequins vedettes, the supermodels of the time, who changed the image of modelling. After them, even the Aristocrats would put their daughters in modelling schools. Their were beauties who had the freedom to choose their houses and presentations, who would only show collections and never do the fittings for the clients. They were stars, stars of the Parisian chic, right from the sky at night over the place Vendôme, the only place you can see the stars in Paris, as they say until this day. They were travelling a lot, envied, adored, admired from South Africa, the UAE to the USA. They were the epitome of French chic, an image, an ideal. The women themselves were completely lost behind that Fassade, but they never lost their charm. Still today, the couturiers believe that their spirits are in Paris, in the Cafés, on the streets, along with the ghosts of Dior, Fath, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, Balmain, Lanvin, Vionnet, Poiret and Givenchy. Especially five of them were known: Freddy, Praline, Lucky, Bettina and Patricia. Great women, and never forgotten.

That particular short evening dress is called "Porcelaine" made from pink silk faille and decorated with rosettes, from the debut Haute Couture collection by Yves Saint Laurent for the Maison Christian Dior for the Spring/Summer 1958 season baptised "Ligne Trapèze". Svetlana herself modelled this dress back in the day and was even photographed by Willy Maywald dressed in the same silhouette, as you can see in the video after they pan over the whole exhibit. Yves Saint Laurent's tenure at the Maison was quite distinctive by observing the profusion of roses and rosettes which he used to embellish the grandest of evening sheaths and ballgowns..
