Inside the laboratory growing sausages from animal cells - BBC News

A laboratory near Edinburgh, Scotland has found a way to grow sausages from animal cells, reports technology show BBC Click.
The animals don’t need to be slaughtered in the process. Instead a biopsy is taken which can be reprogrammed, meaning this could be a greener way to generate meat.
This type of lab-grown meat is yet to receive regulatory approval for human consumption in the UK, but in Singapore, people have been eating lab-grown chicken meat for two years.

Maybe. It’s still too expensive at present. The majority of people can’t afford to eat it often. Only by mass production can bring the costs down, IMO.

It all comes down to cost. Once mass production of this is cheaper than factory farming, it will quickly rise in use. Public perception will change with time, cost savings, and marketing.
@Jen-Yueh_Hu

The cost will never come down without scale. Which means some sponsorship/subsidies would be required to get the scale going. Regulations would need to be in place against corruption. The best way might be if some private company with its own supply chain wants to invest into the new technology. But which company would want to do that?
@TheGlobalProfessional
@TheGlobalProfessional Жыл бұрын
@@Jen-Yueh_Hu Scale is huge. I think scale will be funded in large part by the traditional food production companies. Purdue, Tyson, McDonalds, Kraft, etc. could cut costs greatly by using these techniques. Much like self driving, scale invitro meat will face the hurdles of regulation and public perception.
@Jen-Yueh_Hu

@@TheGlobalProfessional That is not what this video is saying however. Scale is limited. Also, their business model seems to be the lab producing the starter culture (for lack of a better term) and letting their clients grow/produce them rather than the lab developing into a production company itself. It is like GM companies selling seeds and we already know about the ethical problems with those. (ie plants that do not produce seeds themselves, forcing customers to keep buying more seeds.)

This is definitely the future. Having living cattle that you need to feed and care for and also have huge facilities to care for these animals is a huge costs. Once growing meat like this becomes more efficient and on a bigger scale, it will replace the entire cattle industry. It's not a matter of public perception, it is a matter of cost and efficiency, it will happen regardless of what people think or feel about it. If anything this is much more humane then our current way of doing things. No more animals will suffer in tight and inhumane facilities where they grow up just to become food.

This is not yet a viable protein source. Animal cell cultures require sera, which is derived from animal sources. And while there are companies trying to produce animal free sera, they are still years away from doing so economically.
