My high school was 2 blocks from the airport! The 747 Olympic Eagle flew me and my family to JFK in 1985. We played water wars in the pool at the entrance of the international building at the end of every school year! Both 747 and building are going to be restored and become a museum The 727 is already on display on L. Vouliagmenis The 737 is been restored and hopefully will be displayed like the others. The New project is ongoing and new buildings are rising! It was so sad to see the old airport dilapidated and falling apart! Lastly it is very exiting to see of what’s to come and the new city that emerges in the old airport space over the next few years! Great video, brought back a lot of memories, thank you

Very cool. I lived in Kalamaki as a kid in the 70s and early 80s. My dad was USAF stationed at Hellenikon AFB. When planes approached to land from the West side (the opposite end from where these bros explored), they went directly over our house, about 100 meters altitude. When I say directly, I mean exactly directly. Our house was aligned perfectly with runway about 1 1/2 km away. When we heard jumbo jets approaching (e.g. 747s, DC-10s, L-1011s, etc) or big US military cargo planes (C-130s, C-141s, C-5s) we would run outside to the field next to our house to watch them fly over and land. We had a clear line of sight to the runway from our house. I remember the loudest planes were the Soviet airline, Aeroflot IL-52s. They had all four engines mounted on the tail like the western VC-10s. Their engines were loud because they used low quality fuel. It was all they could afford back then. The Scandinavian Airline stretch DC-8s were my favorites, after the TWA and Pan American 747s. We could actually see the passengers in the window seats as they flew by. Another thing I remember is when we were in trouble with our parents and they were chewing us out, if a plane flew over, they would stop until it had gone by because we couldn't hear them and they couldn't hear their own voices. They would just stop mid-sentence for about a minute. We would all sit there in silence, parents glaring at us. When the plane was gone, they picked up where they left off and continued chewing us out. Fun times!

I like to think my late grandmother flew on the Olympic eagle from New York City back to Athens in first class back in the day. She usually flew Olympic airways to and from her native Greece by herself, but if it was with the family: my grandfather, uncle and aunt who were children back then and my dad had long moved out and married, it was TWA. I don’t know *how* the airline managed to fall so hard from grace.
@Subgunman4 ай бұрын
Carl Icahn who bought the airline bled it to death by basically giving away free seats to his friends. His negligence lead to thousands loosing their jobs. He was able to sell off the aircraft to other airlines while trashing the older undesirable stock for parts. Pure greed on his part. Today he is in bankruptcy, a fitting finish for what he did to many.
@BritanniaPacific4 ай бұрын
@@Subgunman yes, TWA is well publicized, but I was referring to Olympic airways falling from grace. Maybe the Greek version of Carl Icahn?
@Subgunman4 ай бұрын
@@BritanniaPacific basically that’s what happened, Onassis turned the airline over to the Greek government and eventually those in charge started abusing the airline by providing free travel to big shots and politicians. At this point who pays for fuel as well as the labor? The labor force became public servants of the government, retirement was reduced to when you hit 50 years of age and received a sizable retirement pension. Eventually fares were raised to the point that it was cheaper to travel with TWA until it befell the same fate. I believe Olympic airways outlived TWA into around 2009. The same policies that drove Greece into the austerity programs of Germany and the ECB are what caused the airline to fail. Today it is a subsidiary of Aegean Airlines which is controlled by Lufthansa of Germany. While Aegean is thriving and utilizing the Airbus A230 series of aircraft, Olympic is relegated to use the ATR series of aircraft which serve many of the smaller islands due to shorter runways, an aircraft that I avoid because of its past history.
