I’d add that there’s an issue of importance and perception. It’s importance can only be dictated so long as we see the results of this tournament, and what it actually reveals (whether it’s related to the players, organizations, the NBA or its fans as a whole). Perception is important too, as for guys like Shaq (who is all about the hardware) this is just an extra trophy to add that isn’t as important as the Larry O’Brien. However, I believe he’s jumping the gun too fast. At the very least, the NBA is trying to do something about the lack of entertainment and investment inbetween post-12 games and the all-star break.

Spot on. Silver has said many times that the game needs to expand and they want to expand the league. Vegas, Seattle, Vancouver are potential future cities. I think the NBA is finally catching up to every other sport in the world with intermediary cups. If I were a contending team, I would look at the play in cup as my first test to see if we are ready. It brings playoff esque intensity earlier in the season and viewership earlier in the season. I don't need to pull Nielson numbers to know that before the all star break, views for games are lower until after the Superbowl when there are no other sports on TV. Where I think the NBA failed in some ways is how they're marketing the tournament. All these pundits are talking about it but there isn't really a reward for winning. The in season tournament looks Silver is incorporating elements of European football, soccer, into the NBA with pool play and knockout rounds. Like how they have the Champions League tournament games during the same time as the English Premiere League (EPL). The advantage of the European football tournaments is that you are getting the top teams in different leagues that would never play each other as part of their own league championships, EPL and Bundesliga for example. The NBA already has this as part of the post season conference. I think a more interesting tournament would be to get a champions league style tournament with the top 2 or 3 teams from other top basketball countries to play against each other. That would be incredible if that happened yearly or every other year.

I enjoy it. I think it should have some other value like home court advantage in a potential playoff series (if the winning team makes it). Obviously, there's plenty of other better ideas, but still. I think the premise of this is cool, and it works in sports across the world outside of the US. One issue North American sports have is we're not surrounded by dozens of neighboring countries... promoting friendly rivalries that motivate our athletes into feelings of pride representing their region vs the best of another region. So we may try to replicate the tournaments, but it's harder to replicate the intrinsic cultural motivations that go winning the league title.

If anyone follows soccer, it's basically a cup competition in a European league. Like the FA Cup or Carabao Cup in the Premier League, for example. That's the inspiration for the tournament I would think. It's a really good idea from Adam Silver and I think it makes things more exciting and interesting, allowing the players to have something else to play for and add to their legacies. I know a lot of dumb North Americans are gonna say "Mickey Mouse trophy" or something and some people like Shaq for example are close minded just because it's new, but if it continues on for 5, 10, 15 years, I'd like to hope it'll gain more prestige.

But the FA and Carabao Cup includes teams from multiple tiers, while this tournament in particular are the same 30 teams. Adam Silver should expand it, not keep it within just the NBA squads.

@@DIAC1987 Well it's a new thing, right... who knows how it'll evolve over time, or if it even will, who knows. That would be very interesting though, but it may interfere with the regular season, so not sure how they would make that work.

@@ant4613 I am pretty sure the other leagues begin around the same time, and its an indoor sport. All they'd have to do is be willing to cut/pause their regular season to make this tournament last from November to Christmastime---which lets be honest is when everyone feels like the NBA season actually starts.

I’m one of the dumb North Americans who actually appreciates ONE champion. European soccer is like Oprah: You get a trophy You get a trophy You get a trophy Everyone look under your seat!!! A trophy!!!!! But it’s just me, a dumb North American 🎤

@@jogendron6320 Uhh, no, it's really not like that at all. You clearly don't watch or follow and are just babbling for no reason.

The fun of European cups is that almost every team in the country, from the amateurs until the top teams can play in the cup and sometimes the local no name amateur teams beats the pros and even reaches the finals. I'd love to see NBA teams go up against top NCAA teams, see how the top talents line up against the pros, G-league teams embarrass NBA teams etc
@Masterful1008 ай бұрын
Yeah this would make it so much better. Maybe even some European teams too. Then there would be a lot more pride at stake for nba players, plus we'd see some huge upsets.

I love the sentiment, but I just don't see the giant killing happening in basketball nearly as frequently as it does in soccer. In soccer the lesser team can park the bus and hope for a counter attack, win 1-0 or draw and win a penalty shootout. Basketball doesn't allow for an analogous strategy.

I love the courts too idk why so many people hate them

College and NBA are different though. In college, winning tournaments means some NBA scout might see you. If you are already in the NBA, its not the same.

They should give out +5 regular season Win advantage for the winner. Not too much to change the season but could be huge advantage for the standing for the play in tier teams to go all out mid season

Man... Stephen curry pretty much explained what the in tournament is its very simple stuff. I wish TNT could've gotten the video of Steph curry explaining the in season tournament

Just give Division winners a trophy. That's all that is needed for the regular season.

2:55 com'on, you can't tell me he isn't bs'ing here. they probably told them to not say anything negative about the court designs, I imagine. + he nearly cracked a smile also.
