Great video & though I alas haven't been there yet, it is always a pleasure to meet Nicole in shows here in Paris or see videos of distillery visits with her giving apparently top notch tours...I can't get enough of her lovely accent, btw (& I understand she's originally from Islay, so it is a not the Campbeltown one). Yes everytime I speak of Springbank on my channel, website or live chats, people surprised to all I had access 20 to 10 years ago, but it was a different world, supply & demand wise as you or Nicole mentioned it...There was even a time where I could try a dram of original Local Barley series (one of the SCs vintage 1966, for instance) for little less than the price of a full bottle of the 10 yo, but now it's too late (for those who wonder, and I can say that of the core range too from 20 years ago) they're different from the ones nowadays....Batch variations at Springbank, as I'm sure you know, are almost the "standard" policy in a way, as they like to experiment, even if there is a red thread I think among em, for instance the famous "Campbeltown funk", even if (& I will come back to this question in a future video in which I'll be reviewing 4 generations of Springbank 10 yo), the funk didn't exist in many older bottlings I tried, believe me or not...Just subded to your channel, btw, and still looking forward to try a sample I swapped last year of one of your very original blended malts...(the first one for Summerton Club)

I popped down yesterday. What a cool wee shop. I hadn’t realised that signing the bottle from the cage was an anti flipper thing. I’d thought it was just a nice thing to do. The demijohn are a brilliant wee twist on the handfill idea too. Was with people so didn’t spend too long in shop but would love to come back and peruse it all more comprehensively as well as maybe doing the tour and that’s before we get in to other distilleries. The respect I feel for them for keeping their prices reasonable in a situation like this is immense. I grabbed a bottle (1 per customer) from whiskybase the other week for 60 or so bucks. It's not cheap but given what they could easily charge for it, it's amazing. On the other hand, I bet customers would turn on them a bit if they didn't and pretty quickly a brand could lose the following it has - especially when your target audience isn't the everyday drinker. So I also think it isn't a dumb business decision. The same goes for bottles that goes unopened. The reason she says over and over that they like customers to open bottles isn't only for altruistic reasons of course. If less people get a hold of their bottles, they lose out on more potential customers

It's terrible that most Springbank whisky bought ends up at auction. You just need to look at the auctions in the U.K and between them all, there's about 1000 Springbank every month. On some occasions you'll see a Springbank that you've never seen before,but they get snapped up aswell.The ten year old only makes an extra £20-£30 but they still appear,is it really worth doing it? Excellent video. Gosh, it wasn't so long ago I could buy any Springbank I wanted. Anything. It's gone so crazy now. I love Nicole and what she says makes so much sense. Nevertheless, I have to say that the distillery is letting its U.K customers down. I know the whole world wants the stuff but they are getting way more than us. Local Barley is ballot only unless you're on good terms with a handful of Scottish retailers. What on earth is going on? By the way don't buy all the guff about pricing for the people. The 21 and 25 are obscenely priced as is the Local Barley. It is lovely whisky but the hype is completely bonkers. What can I say, that's how it is. Great video mate. WT

I hear you Welsh Toro. I personally think that the retail prices are fairly reasonable, but I can understand the hesitance when it comes to the more limited/premium releases like Local Barley - it's not something I'd be jumping at either. I want local barley, cask strength 12 and Hazelburn Oloroso. To stop all of the flippers, just crack the seals and maybe use a 10p length of sticky tape instead (to secure corks for transport). "Unsealed bottles" will be rejected by auction houses, thus putting the flippers out of business.
@TheWhiskyBaron5 ай бұрын
three great choices! I hear your point with the seals, but I'd be beyond annoyed if bottles I was buying from anywhere came already open as it means they have to be consumed and I can't put them in my collection if I want to. I think what they do with putting names on the cage bottle is much more appropriate - just a shame there's no one keeping track of the names of constant flippers!

Twenty years back Springbank core range were available with some of the older expressions being a bit limited but available here and there. Nowadays it's hard to get the core range let alone older juice and when I see any on store shelves the prices are ridiculously overpriced which is sad state of affairs. I'm a huge fan of Springbank so I'll keep grabbing and enjoying from what I've have in my small stock. The 10yo is not worth no $279 bucks no way.

@@TheWhiskyBaron yes it was different two decades ago that's when I started buying for rainy days, but even in 2012 me and others saw something strange with Lagavulin, Caol ila, Highlamd park, Talisker, Springbank and a few others in that the quality, presentation and availability took a hit and prices climbed slowly as more went to different markets. I manage to grab four local barley 16 for 140-150 out the door with a thank you and see you soon from the shop, today one is lucky to get a great bottle at a fair price. Bro, "the every day man" doesn't have thousands of dollars to fly to Scotland, get a hotel, stand in line, and lose a bunch of pay to pick up a Springbank at the distillery shop. Let's call a spade a spade. I love Springbank, but keeping the MSRP low is just a cheap marketing technique to have a bunch of flippers produce scarcity. They should raise prices to what the secondary market is to kill secondary and let market forces determine what the actual price is. This is really not working in favor of the average drinker. Trust me.
@TheWhiskyBaron Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your point but I'd disagree. raising the price would only quash the secondary market, but you'd still have the same people (like myself) opening and drinking the bottles so the end game wouldn't change. by keeping prices lower however it gives the every day drinker a chance, whether that be complete luck via ballot or by taking a trip of a lifetime to experience the distillery first hand. you're right; it's no longer a malt of the every man, but that's entirely down to flippers and has nothing to do with the distillery
