I don't understand why Ned threw everything away like he did. I just don't understand. I'm beginning to think that maybe Ned and Ariel's marriage was more of a business partnership, they crafted this brand for themselves as a loving couple and played the part for the cameras because there was money at stake....still doesn't explain why he risked it all by having an affair with a subordinate employee and being so open about it....

It's typical behaviour of a narcissistic person: They tag along with whatever and whomever serves their image and/or goals with no deeper sense of authenticity. The instant they desire something which is not compatible with the rest of their house of cards, they can blow it all up overnight because they don't have a strong sense of gratitude or consequences. Narcissists routinely destroy their own good fortune this way, just like Ned did.
