As soon as I heard Willowbrook, my stomach dropped. I’m from NY and took care of more than one elderly person who went there. I worked in community houses that would have 4-5 individuals with varying intellectual or developmental disabilities. One house specifically had a man who was in Willowbrook and then other old school asylums until his 50s. His mind had never moved past that of a ten year old, one who had experienced SA, not to mention physical and verbal too. But the issue was he was in his 70s and while his mind was that of a child, his body wasn’t. So he was an actual risk to children. He’d never done anything but given the chance, might have. But we had signed a form with the state police that we would watch him 24/7 and that man was never out of sight. Even at night the house had alarms on all the doors, but he never tried to escape. He felt safe. It was just if there was an open house or family came to visit someone, he would get a bit TOO close to the kids so it was one of the few houses we had two people stationed at. Poor guy didn’t choose to be intellectually disabled due to abuse to the point his mind stopped developing. It was pure trauma. Just the issue was it could be more trauma for others… but he’d never actually done anything. He’s passed now but I always felt so conflicted over him.

If anyone is interested in what Willowbrook was like, in 1975 Geraldo Rivera (yeah that Geraldo) broke into/was given a key to Willowbrook and took a news team in with him. The reports he did are on You Tube. I would caution anyone who intends to watch that it’s absolutely harrowing, I’ve watched some of it, but can’t get through the whole thing.
@robertmoffett348617 сағат бұрын
That whole Geraldo circus was a disgrace. Yes, the publicity was helpful, but the whole " breaking in " thing was a scam. The campus was open to the public. The gates were wide open 24/7, 365 days a year. Virtually every Staten Islander knew all about Willowbrook for ages before Geraldo did

It was common knowledge among Staten Islanders that Willowbrook was a hell hole, all along. Most knew people who worked there. It seemed like people were just resigned to the idea that the state, and "science" , could do what they wished. Tradition, and wartime emergency measures made people very obedient to authoritarianism

Willowbrook was a cesspit of abuse. I had a second job many years ago as an aide at a group home for developmentally delayed people. There was an old man there with cerebral palsy, with spastic limbs and mental delay. He was a really sweet guy until bath time every night. It took three aides to bathe him. We'd wheel him in in a lift sling to the bathroom, and as soon as he saw the shower, he'd begin to scream in terror. What should have been a lovely warm shower was a nightmare for him. They had punished him for "misbehavior" at Willowbrook by turning the hose on him in the bathroom when he was a child. He was tortured so often, he had PTSD. He would shriek and weep during the showering process, no matter how gentle we were. After we'd get him dried off, with a fresh diaper, and tucked him into his sheepskin sleeping hammock, he was happy as a clam. It broke my heart to see him be so terrified of what should have been a lovely warm shower.

A grammatical point - several viruses cause hepatitis. Each on its own will cause hepatitis. Hepatitis is caused by an individual virus, not by multiple viruses.
@robertkirchner798118 сағат бұрын
How about "Hepatitis can be caused by any one of several viruses"?
@frugalbirders74169 сағат бұрын
Several viruses DO cause viral hepatitis. There are a handful of known forms of viral hepatitis. Hepatitis A (HAV), Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and so on. There is a D and E, and likely more will be identified over time. They are all caused by a specific, different virus. They are all transmitted by sharing body fluids. This video talked about Hepatitis A which is classically transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Yes, you eat some microscopic poop or pee after someone with poor toilet hand hygiene gets it into your mouth by touching something that you touch, then you touch your mouth, or by them touching your food directly. Commonly spread in schools, restaurants, and dormitories. Generally doesn’t kill. Generally gives life-long immunity to HAV. The fact that the kids got hepatitis more than once was the clue that there were two different hepatitises, the second eventually being identified as Hepatitis B, which is caused by a different virus than Hepatitis A.
@JohnnyAngel88 сағат бұрын
Anything that inflames the liver is technically "hepatitis". Viral hepatitis strains can be A, B, C, D, or E. Other viruses that can cause it are CMV, EBV, and HSV.

Before blenders, they were literally shaken. Today you can buy modern plastic shaker cups with a fitting in the lid that's designed to blend the contents as it moves through. Obviously it can't chop things up, but it will distribute flavourings, soft icecream, etc throughout the milk better than stirring or shaking without the special fitting. One advantage of these cups is not requiring electricity, and another advantage is they're 100% dishwasher safe, unlike many blender parts that need hand washing

Yes, it could go much deeper. It could go into conspiracy theories. And then the deep conspiracy theories.
