Only the exterior of Timberline Lodge was used in Stanley Kubrick's movie The Shining. So unless you've visited here, you probably don't now just how amazing it is inside!

It can be seen in everything people do today. Mediocrity is the order of the day. Look at the woeful state of automobiles. They were once an object of intense pride. Today, they are appliances no different than a dishwasher. The few people that try to make the ugly, bland, soul sucking, automobiles some sort of an object of pride get a lot of hate from the appliance drivers. However, if someone wants to change the bland, lack luster, ugly, houses of today, they get praise. I do not understand that. With so much ugliness in the world today, even making a pen an object of pride by making it beautiful should be appreciated and respected.

I use to like to go out to Timberline when I lived in Portland, whenever I felt a need to get out of the city. Which became more and more and eventually I moved away. Whenever relatives would visit me the Mt Hood area including Timberline, was always on the top of my list as where I would take them. It's a beautiful building in a beautiful setting. Well worth a visit.

I first walked through those doors in 2015 as a traveler from Kansas. The last time I walked out of those doors was in January of 2018. I ended up working in the kitchen and living in the employee locker room (for a couple months)... Part of my heart belongs to Mama Hood and Timberline Lodge.

What incredible architecture, inside and out! I can see why it was selected to be the exterior model of the Overlook Hotel in the motion picture, "The Shining." The building is a work of art. I would venture to say, it is a monument and a landmark.

I must add to this. I lived near enough to Timberline Lodge to go often from childhood, summer and winter. I was born in 1951. I spent my honeymoon night there, but only 1 night because someone had reserved the entire lodge after that! Everything in Timberline Lodge was made by hand (1936-1938 to give people jobs in the Big Depression); all the iron work, all the furniture, all the woodcarving, hand woven fabric on all the chairs, handmade rugs on the floors, handwoven giant draperies on the windows. The rugs, drapes and upholstery were replaced again with handwoven fabric and handmade rugs around the late 1970's. My husband worked for a short while in Portland repairing older peoples' homes for free in the early 1970's, and we actually met Orion B. Dawson (who was the designer and overseer for the wrought iron in the lodge) when my husband worked on his house!!! What a wonderful experience. He also did the wood relief carving such as is shown in this video of the oxen and covered wagons going over the Oregon Trail. He gave us lessons in wood carving for free! He also gave us some blueprints of the work he designed. We were wowed! His wife played in the Portland Symphony and taught violin. She gave us free violin lessons. A wonderful, wonderful couple.
@lorikirkwood5414
@lorikirkwood5414 Ай бұрын
I must correct my comment concerning the wood relief carving. While Orion B. Dawson did this kind of carving, the carving at Timberline Lodge was done by someone else. He may not have designed the wrought iron work, it seems, but he did oversee all of the wrought iron work. Many, many people participated in the artistry in Timberline Lodge.

Now days, the fireplace wouldn't be made from railroad ties. they would be cheap castings made in China.
@indridcold8433
@indridcold8433 3 жыл бұрын
It would not even be that. What do you think it is, 1990? Today, it would be particle board with a cheap printed laminate. The logs would by styrofoam spray painted in Earth tones with sparkly red paint in the cracks. The fire would be some cheap, red, lamp over the fake logs but recessed above the fake fireplace opening so the LEDs can not be seen. The mantel would be made of blow molded plastic, made in China of course. The brick that is supposed to contain the fire and goes all the way up to the chimney is just printed paper over particle board. The fireplace utensils that are supossed to be used to move real logs, sweep ashes, and the such, are made of cheap, hollow, rolled, sheet metal, made in China of course. The American flag over the mantel is made in Hong Kong, which is China anyway, but it makes the supply company feel better. The check in counter is made of particle board with a sheet plastic top that is made to sort of resemble something vaguely like marble. The check in desk attendant is a teenager on work release wearing a tuxedo print T- shirt, black jeans, and an ankle monitoring device. The bellhop is a prostitute on probation. The bartender is some homeless guy that lives in his broken down camper that is parked in the parking lot. As for the parking valet, there is no parking valet. You just gave your keys to a car thief.

Beautiful. The interior of the fictional Overlook was modeled after the Ahwahnee hotel in Yosimite California. When I saw the interior of that gorgeous hotel, not only was I taken aback by its beauty, but amazed at how much it resembled the fictional Overlook that was built on a UK soundstage.

It was built in just 15 monrhs by the Works Progress Administration. Franklin Roosevelt started the WPA as a way to create jobs during the Depression. Recent Italian immagtants who were skilled artisans in wood crafting did mucj of the woodwork. I was there in 1991 and forgot huw beautiful it is.

@indridcold8433
@indridcold8433 3 жыл бұрын
The Stanley in Estes Park, Colorado is the original Grand Overlook Hotel inspiration that King used. For the Kubrick motion picture, the exterior was inspired by The Timberline Lodge on the base of Mount Hood, featured in this video. For the interior of the Kubrick version of the Grand Overlook Hotel, the inspiration came from The Magestic of Yosemite. The three hotels are the unholy trinity that make The Grand Overlook Hotel. Stephan King's television miniseries, "The Shining," also features, The Stanley Hotel for The Overlook. The Stanley and The Magestic at Yosemite are supposed to be actually haunted. Please remember to stay at Room 217. Remember that Room 237 does not exist in the Magestic at Yosemite. Either way, do not try to write a novel in any of the three hotels after having stopped drinking five months earlier. You may wind up, "correcting," your spouse.

I'm guessing probably a WPA project, especially if Roosevelt presided over the opening. In the height of the depression, Roosevelt made the bold move of dealing with massive unemployment by putting people to work on government projects. It was responsible for everything from roads and bridges to beautiful lodges and park buildings.
