Culinary specialists must be real badass sailors! Combat units have it rough, but they know the missuon ends at some point and can come back to base. Cooks on the other hand...everyone has to eat every day until the end of their days 😮

Back when I was active duty, I spent my time on the "mess decks", but I met a good number of CSs (They were called "Commisarymen" back then). Many of them were Filipino in those days ... watching them work was a big distraction from my job! They were amazing to watch even then. I can only imagine what the people doing that job today are capable of!

It should be pointed out, how dangerous cooking on a ship that's underway, is. Evasive maneuvers and high speed runs leave cooks open to being thrown around, burned, cut, or crushed. A Navy Chief friend of mine once told me that the worst was trying to cook on a ship, as it was leaving the dock. These things just don't happen, on land.

I was in the airwing but when deployed with our carrier the chow was great and mid-rats was the best !
