I lubed our 846 exactly the same way. Floor and apron chains got the used motor oil right after a days use. While the chains were hot. Must have been okay. I never replaced those the 25 or so years I had the baler. I did replace the roller chain on the left side. It drives the apron chains. I believe 3 times it used up all of the adjustment in the idler sprocket. I have a 648 auto wrap now. It will bale rings around my old 846. Wrapping a bale only takes right at 25 seconds. A very simple switch with a buzzer alerts you the baler is full. Also the wrapping process has started. You stop the tractor. A quick glance to be sure both twine leads have started. Second buzz. The process is complete.a quick glance to confirm the twine leads have been cut. Then dump the bale. Close the gate. Off again. No throttling back. No stopping the PTO.

I went from an 855 chain baler that I wore completely out to a Deere 566 with net, the net is super fast but is a real PITA when it gets frozen to the ground and all the sloppy crap that sticks to it and the trash you have left to deal with after. I sold the 566 and went back to a NH, a 678 autowrap. I can start a bale as fast as I want to ride the tractor. Belts are much less frustrating to work on than the old chains, I had an 851 before the 855, getting away from the floor chains and only having apron chains was a huge improvement, but eventually the 855 began to have tying problems like you speak of, and after a couple new airbags in the same season, it was time for an upgrade.

That brings back fun times. The 850 NH cachunka-chunking around the field. Always having to bolt the rear window open mid-spring for the manual twine wrapping handle that resulted in a dust layer 1" thick on everything. Having one arm completely wore out from cranking left to right 375 times per bale. One nice thing we had was two holes cutin the rear hatch over the chains for oiling from the ground.

I like your channel a lot. I get a real kick of seeing the vintage equipment you have and use. A chain round baler...I am sure ours went to Baler Valhalla (as much trouble as we had with twine, it may have gone to Baler Hell) in the mid 80’s. I never thought I would see one in action ever again, but then again I never expected to see an ear corn picker in action either.

I myself still bale with a 850 new Holland baler. One of the first models made. It is a 1978 model. Just baled 200 bales with it this summer. New Holland 850 balers and new Holland chain balers have buried more old Vermeer and John Deere balers then you could imagine . That is why they probably stopped making the chain balers cause they couldnt make a profit due to the longevity of them. Been baling with our baler 43 years. Most bearings are still original. Have only changed 4 in the years we have had this baler. Worse trouble now is they quit making almost all the parts for them. I had to have the drive sprockets custom made at a machine shop when they went bad.

That's because Case/International Harvester/New Holland all owned by FIAT now sucks as a company compared to before the Ford Tractor Division buyout of the mid-late 90's... Should always disengage the pto and turn the tractor off before going anywhere near one of those balers. The ram lock was the only safe thing you did. They pull hay in at 6ft a second, once you snag some clothing or go too close to the pick up, you’re already gone, trust me I know a fellow farmer taken in just over 30 years ago now, dead in seconds.

Yes, the very last models could have net wrap. There was one for sale near me last year when I was looking but it was painted like a circus clown (wrong shades of red and yellow), and the guy wanted a ridiculous amount of money for it. NH chain balers are all but worthless in value even though they will bale fenceposts and boulders, and keep on running...

Hi at 2.oo mins you say sealed bearings and they drive you nuts we had some on an old Allis Chalmers Gleaner combine with sealed bearings that several went dry and failed so we had a look at them and found the seal is just a thin steel plate so we drilled a small hole in it right in the middle between the inner and outer bearing races size 1-2 mm or 1/16th -5/64 ths and used a chainsaw bar grease gun the one with the tapered tip and pumped grease in whilst turning the drive system by hand (combine engine turned off ) so as to get grease to spread around inside bearing and did them once or twice during the season just a odd few shots to top up I don’t think we lost any bearings after that hope that helps from the west country England

Yeah that or a grease needle is your friend! Our old Ford 207 disk and Caldwell hipper used sealed bearings. When I replaced all the blades on the disk back in the early 90's I bought all new GREASABLE bearings and new flanges with zerks on them for greasing them and converted it over. Dunno what IDIOT *ever* thought SEALED bearings running in dusty, wet, dirty environments under a HIGH load would ever be a good idea... just STUPID! The hipper used 2 ball bearings pressed in back-to-back in a cast angled housing to set the blade angles... the center race was like 1/4 wider on each side than the outer race, with a square bore for the disk blade axle which was about a foot or so long, with 2 blades and 2 spacers on either side of the bearing housing. They were sealed bearings too. Had a lot of them go out over the years, so I FINALLY modified the housings by drilling a hole in the back and installing a zerk, and as we put in new bearings,I started popping off the seals on one side and putting them back to back with no seals between them, so grease could get in to the balls. Imagine my surprise when I popped the seal off this BRAND NEW BEARING and found that they basically put ONE LITTLE GOB of grease in there about the size of the amount of toothpaste a kid puts on their toothbrush (like 2 frozen green peas!) to lube the entire bearing FOR LIFE. They don't even put the grease in between the balls or on the cage or in the raceway, no, it's right at the edge up against the seal, so the bearing has to get HOT and the grease melt and run down into the path of the balls to get spread around! It's just cheap almost clear kinda tan looking grease anyway, nothing of any quality or substance! Once I started pumping the annulus in the housing between the two bearings full of grease, the bearings started lasting for a LONG time... My advice is on ANY sealed bearing you have to replace, get a grease needle and ease it under the seats and PUMP THAT SUCKER FULL OF GOOD GREASE, because they don't put sh!t in them at the factory! OL J R :)

@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 2 жыл бұрын
@@leeroyexcavator9149 Yep IF you can get a Vermeer to START a bale, they're a great baler... BUT if conditions are not good, they won't start a bale. Had a co-worker hire me to come bale his ryegrass hay because his old Vermeer simply wouldn't start a bale but maybe once in about 10-15 tries... he got disgusted and called me to come bale it. Pulled in with my 40 year old Ford 552 (Gehl 1500) and rolled it all up no problems, never had a hiccup! Those old Vermeers used a "starter roller" with rubber flaps on them and I think his were shot. The newer Vermeers use stiff rubber pickup teeth to SHOVE the hay into the chamber to get a bale rolling-- either way, as soon as the teeth rubbers soften up or the starter roll gets worn they won't start a bale except in IDEAL conditions... and replacing all those rubber teeth every other season so they WILL start a bale is EXPENSIVE! The rubber flap starter rolls at least were cheaper to fix! I like how heavy a Vermeer baler is built, but that "won't start unless everything's perfect" keeps me away from them! OL J R:)

Crowder wheels dont really help...a wider pickup than vale width is only way to go...just rake a foot wider than the bale width and youll have the sqaurest shoulders around

Oil and grease, life blood of old balers and tractors. You think its a hassle to do, but don't do it a few times and see what happens. Bad day maker.

Just saying I've ran those old balers for years start the string and count to 9 really fast and just bump the lever only a inch or two and it will look like the automatic balers and only go across one time will make a much nicer bale than what you are doing

And just who do you propose selling those hay bales to after splashing used oil all over the baler? I assume you sell all your hay to the nearest oil fired power station because I for one wouldn’t feed your hay to any living organism let alone my horse.

Because belts on newer balers slough off rubber bits into your hay too, containing heavy metals like cadmium, and carcinogens such as styrene-butadiene, and benzene. So either way your horse will die of something.

You do realize that oil is gone after about 10 seconds of hay and dust rolling in the chamber... (rolleyes) Typical horse person LOL:) OL J R :)

Do you have a video of how to sting it? My dad just bought one we have never messed with round balers before so if you have one showing that would be great 😊
