Hey, being an Australian surfer it's great to see an 'update' on Bethany Hamilton. I remember when she was attacked while competing in the States. Sounds like she's a full American now. She was a fighter from day '1'. 🌊🦈

Absolutely smart wonderful girl. She has a a better outlook on life than people who had everything handled to them and never had any trauma. I’m so happy she doesn’t hate sharks because they aren’t like humans they don’t do anything out of malice.

I never imagined I'd be one of the kids who survived a shark attack. I felt a sudden, sharp pain in my leg. Looking down, I saw a large, dark shape it was a shark. I screamed for help. My friends were terrified and lifeguards rushed into action. Just as quickly as it had attacked, the shark let go. With all my strength, I was safe, but my life was changed forever.

The important thing to remember is that the ocean is the home of all marine life. Just as the land is humans’ homes. We have to always remember. I was taught to never wear jewelry or swimming attire that reflects the sun in a sparkling way. Most fishing lures have metal on them somewhere which reflects light causing sparkling reflections. I get that a predator would be curious and drawn to things of this nature. I learned this as a teen and have never forgotten it and I live by those rules to this day.

This actually makes me feel 'less' afraid of sharks! We're so often just bombarded with stories of people who die from shark encounters, so to see a large amount of (inspirational) people who've survived, makes surviving an attack seem a bit more ordinary/common (if you get my logic?!). Congrats and thanks to all of those in this video, who've shared their story.x

8:13 argh....a nurse who thinks that wrapping a towel around a limb is called a tourniquet. Its a perfectly fine to use that to put pressure on a wound and reduce the bleeding, but thats not what a tourniquet does. A true tourniquet has to be twisted on so hard to stop all bloodflow, that the victim will scream his lungs out in pain. Not because the wound hurts, but due to the sheer pressure that the tourniquet puts on the nerves.

I was working a contract in Acapulco, so I went swimming: in a split second, an undertow pulled me away! I didn't panic and started swimming sideways as you're supposed to: after a while I saw everyone on the beach looking at me and waving their arms... two local lifeguards made their way to me and insisted I get my full body on the board as they nervously swam on each side of me. I understood enough spanish then to catch the word tiburon 😳 a jet ski came to us and pulled us away... to this day, I think they saved my life! 😬 🫣 🦈 🥰 🇲🇽

The netting allows smaller fish and marine life through, but stops anything big like sharks. I mean, at least a small area on these beaches for kids would be nice no?
