That was awesome! I've seen Fire 5 in use tackling a brush fire in Burbank before, amazing skill to be able to fly so close and low to a burning hill-side to then drop water - just a few feet from homes as well. The film, San Andreas, actually featured actors playing the part of LAFD Air Ops, and started off with a hoist rescue. So awesome!

Of course, “San Andreas” was just a movie and I’m pretty sure that real helicopters do not have a “hover mode” where the pilot can just flip a switch and then move about the aircraft without anyone at the controls.

Seriously, I loved that movie, though a lot of it was way “out there” in terms of belieavability. But it was a fun movie, that’s for sure. Even from the beginning. All hell breaks loose, so our main character decides he’s just going to take the copter up to San Francisco. Sure, why not!

Thank you! We know how important it is for them to have been there as firefighters on a brush fire, or EMT/Paramedic on medical calls, so that the water drops and hoists (among other things) are seamless. It also ensures these individuals have proven themselves as hard workers and proficient learners in everything they have done for the LAFD prior to becoming a pilot. This is also true for our fire inspectors, divers, boat pilots, and even the individuals behind this keyboard!

LAFD thank you for your sharing more about the department. I have my interview with your department on 9/11. I love all the different opportunities (especially becoming a helicopter pilot) your firefighters are offered within the department for growth and training.

We agree! Nick with MPD does a fantastic job and we would love to launch a similar program. However, we do not have the staffing or budget to have the dedicated staff/equipment the endeavor requires. We hope to be able to grow #InsideLAFD and produce engaging content within the limits we have so stay tuned!

Nice Video overall, but maybe for a future video maybe more around the ground ops portion would be cool. So why did LAFD decide to go with the Agusta and not the FireHawks like the County uses?
@lafd

Craig DeRoss, Our friends at the Los Angeles County Fire Department with - and other agencies that are soon to obtain - the Sikorsky S-70 Firehawk seem very happy with their acquisition. Since 1961, LAFD Air Operations has maintained a fleet of all Bell helicopters. Our early involvement and official selection of what is now known as a Leonardo AW139 took place while Bell was an integral element of the design team for a yet to debut aircraft - designed formally as a replacement for their venerable Bell 412 via the consolidated Bell/Agusta Aerospace Company. Much in the way that Sikorsky has changed hands in recent years (now owned by Lockheed/Martin), Bell made some far reaching corporate decisions over the last two decades that caused them to change participation in several projects. Though the AW139 has very strong Bell DNA, it was commercially built and known as an AgustaWestland aircraft at the time it debuted in LAFD service. The made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania twin-turbine airframe remains popular with our pilots and other aviators, and has been a very efficient and affordable addition to our fleet, which will in the future have five AW139's as a standardized element (with associated benefits) to fulfill our agency's medium duty helicopter roles. The LAFD design participation and selection process for the AW139 was guided solely by an assessment of our agency specific operations, for which Leonardo (nee Bell, AgustaWestland) proved to be the most responsive and responsible bidder to our agencies expressed needs, demands and funding. That much offered, two of our LAFD AW139's with more than a decade in the air, are already in the latter half of their lifetime with our agency. While we would not hesitate to add more AW139's to our fleet in the future, such decisions regarding future LAFD aircraft will be made in the best interest of the people of Los Angeles, in an aviation market - and fire service - that will continue to evolve. We hope this information helps. Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service, Brian Humphrey Firefighter/Specialist Public Service Officer Los Angeles Fire Department

Lowest bidder? Who knows. Seriously, it would be interesting to know why they went with one type over another. Back in the day, everyone was using the Bell 212, 412, etc. I know the newer copters are faster and more efficient, but there’s nothing like the sound of a Huey!

Flew goggles on UH-60’s (crew chief) in the Army. What’s it like flying goggles on a fire? Sounds pretty wild. How do the goggles handle the fires? Looks like an awesome outfit, gives me the burn to get back into Rotary Winged maintenance.
