Yeah, DT really lost me with The Astonishing, but A Dramatic Turn of Events and their self-titled were pretty dang good. They definitely aren't the same as they were, which is a shame, but they can still put out good music. I'm holding out hope for their next album. I'm hoping they bring back some of the metal sounds they had in older albums.

Being a drummer, I'm pretty picky about drum sound, so I totally understand that! His snare drum is so low pitched and almost sounds like an aggressive brush hit. There's no crack that the snare drum needs in the the first two albums. The Astonishing had slightly better drum sounds, but still. I'm in a position where I'm not expecting anything, and will just take new music as it comes and hope for the best.

Ron is a genious. Billy and Mike are one of the bests on their instruments. Derik is a mix of Kevin and Jordan, a technical player who has a very good taste. And Jeff is one of the best rock singers. The only thing that can ruin this band is compare it to DT.

As a pro bassist I have to disagree. Billy Sheehan is awesome, not only unbelieveably professional, but also with unbelieveable chops and technique. I don't really think they're comparable that much, they both have such different things to offer, starting from player character, sonic style, showmanship, they're completely different worlds. I think they both be in a world of trouble trying to learn and truthfully replicate each other's best material... and either of them is replaceable in any project they have ever done without a major hassle. I don't even think it's worthwhile comparing the creme of the modern bass players, they're so good at what they do, and so out there that I'd be surprised if there would be much to measure their playing with anybody except themselves...

I'm totally digging this album. It is has a bit of the Awake era feel to it, which is my favorite Dream Theater album. Possibly album of the year. Putting Billy Sheehan in it just put the icing on the cake...... although it he ever quit, I'd be jumping through hoops to try to get an audition with these guys. Haha.

Constantly saying you're over DT - played DT songs in one band then formed an actual DT covers band. Now forming a rival prog metal band with an ex DT member. Sons of Apollo will last 2 albums at the most. and of course the obligatory live DVD and drum only DVD....oh and lets not forget - trying to worm your way back into DT once you realised you weren't gonna be in AX7 full time as youd hoped...AFTER they'd filmed the drummer documentary AND gone thru all the legal stuff to get him in the band..."for the fans"...hysterical.

Four ways I would describe what I've heard from this band so far: 1. What Adrenaline Mob should have been 2. Prog stars midlife crisis 3. Portnoy doing to dad rock what he did to 80's rock with Winery Dogs 4. Bumblefoot's better-than-average-but-not-yet-optimal playground So far sounds interesting, hope it leads to better projects for Ron in the future.

Kotow Boy Look up Portnoy, this is just one of many bands he plays in. You say he's like the prog Dave Mustaine, more like the prog Phil Anselmo. He wanted to play other kinds of music, DT didn't want to stop...here we are. Only difference is the band members made it clear where they stand.

Yup, He was kicked out. When Derek became a full pledged DT member, he turned into a full on rockstar. But Derek's musical ideas doesn't coincide well with what MP, JP & JM wanted with DT's music at the time, (+ the spat that they had with the record label) so they let him go. Then they brought in Jordan & created "Scenes From A Memory", & the rest they say is history. Well at least up to 2010.

well to be honest a lot of SFAM was written when Derek was still in the band. The demos of SFAM have Derek all over them. None the less, DT always wanted Jordan and Derek ended up creating one of the most technical prog instrumental bands ever. I love the fact that Portnoy and Sherinian are working together again.
