I've seen this trend in most of my musician friends. At first, they start as diehard metal fans who think every other genre is garbage. The prospect of such fast and technically challenging music is usually what makes them want to learn an instrument in the first place. Eventually they all come to a point in which they dominate their instrument and know so much about the theory, that all music just start to show for what it is, without prejudices. By this point they've all tried to make their own music and gone the path of trying to make it as complex as possible and put every single technique and concept they've learned. After you do this is easy to see why this is not the path to making "great" music. Beyond how technically impressive it may be, does it move you? Does it captivate you? Does it give you chills? Do you want to listen to it non-stop? Usually the answer is no. So they fall back into "simpler" music. Now, with all their knowledge they more easily see what makes "pop" music deceptively simple. Reducing a song to it's core components, trimming fat, making the right arrangements, and making it express as much as it possibly can is *not* simple. After you learn this, it opens a whole world of new music.

When people say "pop" music, they are referring to what plays on like, actual, terrestrial, broadcast radio...but there is nothing good on that at all. There is a rare station here in the US that would play Leprous. I love introducing the band to people and I always give them the smooth soft songs first so they can discover the really good and brutal stuff that forks them in the heart and rips it out for them to look at before stuffing it back in and stitching it together better than it was before...
@russellzauner4 жыл бұрын
Or I just show them a couple Baard clips and they ask if they guy ever wears a shirt and I am laughing because they may as well ask why he is playing drums on their shoes right now

A lot of people including myself would say that The Congregation is peak Leprous. Then people also complain that Leprous is pop now. What I love is that Einar shuts down the pop comparisons to how the BAND sounds now when he has become more a part of the band than the composer. And I also say this as someone who thinks post congregation is just about as good as pre!
@TheDondoran4 жыл бұрын
I've been a fan of Leprous for a while, but I didn't know that a significant portion of the fanbase prefers The Congregation until I watched Simen's bass playthrough of "I Lose Hope." I'm honestly not sure what my favorite album is, but it might even be Pitfalls. It could also be The Congregation or Bilateral, depending on the day. I dunno, they're just a great band.

I personally think each Leprous album is better than the last but that’s not to say that any aren’t good. I listened to their discography in order one at a time when I listened to them for the first time and with each album I thought “it can’t get better than this” and it blows me away every time. I personally think the best album is a regular toss up between Coal, Congregation, Malina and Pitfalls, but I’ve probably listened to Pitfalls and Coal the most.

The new stuff isn't _pop_ pop anyway. It's pop in the sense that Björk is pop, for instance. Definitely not pop as in stuff that's on radio nowadays.

I understand Einar's frustration with metal elitists taking jabs at pop music. Pop genre is meta essentially rn. It wasn't a couple of decades ago. Pop music has artists that are generic but still do well. THat' because the genre is meta. Pop music also has artists that are genuine and work hard. They do well because their genra is meta. Rock also has artists that are generic and they don't survive because rock has fallen out of the main stream or has been falling out slowly. I take problem with the fact that people will hate on pop in general just out of spite that their favorite genre isn't getting as much attention. Pop artists work hard too. Just because you don't like the music doesn't mean they don't.

How come foreign vocalists have an accent when they speak but never when they sing? Always had that question
@theliberation90614 жыл бұрын
From my own experience, it's much easier to keep your accent in check when you are trying to control it. When singing you pay a lot of attention to how you sound like including the way you pronounce, when just speaking quickly you tend to cut corners and say it the way it comes out naturally. That would be my guess, at least. In my case, I think I could pass for some unidentified guy from the UK if I tried hard enough, but normally I just don't care and you can tell I have a slight accent.

45 year old metalhead, thinks genre descriptions are very trivial...Teens love talking about it, feels knowledgable, confident, but in fact very meaningless really. Pop used to require much more tears and sweat in the past, so got much respect...But even pop songs could reflect on some peoples hearts, they were not manufactured only to sell better. Today its just a product, not a song anymore. Make no mistake ALL metal bands want fame and money...to say otherwise is naive. But the product can be much more real and sincere, and sophisticated in the musical sense. Long story short: I love Leprous, seen em live too, on a long concert, I had some uninterested minutes in between, but overall nothing to regret on my side. Keep up guys!

People don't like pop because it's far more about money than other genres (not that it is a genre but it's referred to as one regularly) and manufactured more so. Not that it doesn't happen in other types of music but they don't make as much money or get as popular as a result
