“Can Asia guide Biden on China?” Keynote Speech by Prof. Kishore Mahbubani
At the “INSIGHT FORUM” organised by Our Hong Kong Foundation, eminent global thinker Professor Kishore Mahbubani called on the US to hit the “pause button” on its geopolitical contest against China amidst the raging global pandemic.
Prof Mahbubani, who is a Distinguished Fellow at National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute, pointed out that the US trade war against China had hurt the American economy without solving the underlying economic concerns it was meant to resolve. Such policies have not raised America’s standing in the world, neither have they weakened China significantly nor led to the progressive isolation of China from most countries.
He said that the Biden administration should press the “pause button” on the contest, especially when billions of people around the world are suffering from the massive economic recession caused by Covid-19. The only way to jumpstart the global economy is for the world’s two leading powers to work together.

In the 1997-1998 financial crisis caused by the attack of hedge fund to the Thai Baht, most of the Asian countries devalued their currency, following the 'advice' of the US. The US persuaded hardly China to do the same, but China did not do so after assessing its own situation and that of her neighbors. One of the reasons was to keep the neighbors Asean economy in a more stable condition, including HK, rather than into further turmoil. China believed this was a political responsibility in Asean, even though she suffered a big fall of her exports. Did the government in Asean countries remember this act of China at that time. As this wise man said, Asean countries should be, and can be more proactive to work together to restore a more peaceful world, make the US know how to work with Asia and China. Eventually this is to your benefits too. Asean are not inferior to the west, stand up and exercise your contribution to the world peace.

The strategy of the US is to rally its allies on two fronts, one using so-called human rights on the western frontier of Xinjiang and the other militarily on the eastern frontier of East and South China Seas by flexing military muscles in the hope of bringing China to its knees. But this strategy is known to most Chinese and doomed to fail. Obviously, all these American moves are responded only by the small circle of allies it has, i.e. Japan, Australia, Canada and European Union( not all nations in this grouping are in full agreement with the US). The US should not forget that the world is not composed of only these nations.

Your third point is exactly why the US has to stop Asia from developing further into an amazing era. Mr Mahbubani has plenty of good insights, but I think he still don't get it that the goal of the US is to destabilize other parts of the world, and any nations that may become a threat to its power. Fortunately, there is nothing it can do about the rise of China, anything it is doing now will only hurt itself down the track, and speed up it demise.

Wong. Kishore is a very accomplished person and you are thinking he doesn't get it that US is an imperialistic beast and thrives on instability. This message is largely meant for the Western audience and if he starts being direct on these points, it will just be perceived as propaganda and argumentative, Instead of influencing the rational minds in the West. He has made many points in between the lines by bringing up Western colonisation and conclusively saying this will not work today, and you think he doesn't know how the US actually is?

As well as Prof Mahbubani tries to articulate the need to guide Biden on China, it is an extremely challenging endeavour. American have long been arrogant and dismissive of the views of other nations. It’s living in its own bubble. We have to pray for world peace and clear sincere heads to manage the worldly affairs.

Does anyone know that the R&D spending of Huawei in 2020 is about the same as Apple and Tesla combined, which is slightly less than the whole country of Australia? This is based on the exchange rate. If we use PPP, it's actually much higher than Australia.
