It's not correct that denser materials absorb less acoustic energy, on contrary. They absorb and scatter acoustic waves more and that is why they produce stronger echo. The less dense medium, on the other hand, interacts with the waves weakly, so it neither scatters, nor absorbs waves much and that's why there is not too much echo from this medium.
