Having just achieved black belt under Sensei Laurie Winter, I am delving as deeply as I can into kata. Your insight is precious to me. It is outside my own experience since I don’t even know all the katas yet. I am 70 years old and new things must come slower now. But I have learned through life to analyze carefully. I find it easy to fall back into old styles from the past ( kyukushinkai, hapkido or shotokan) and wonder what a Goju guy should look like in a fight. After some discussion, my fellow black belts said that he would be standing in Sanchin dachi with his hands in a ‘T’ stance with one hand on his face and the other cupping his elbow. From there he isn’t threatening or subject to cell phone evidence in court, but ready to respond with ju moves like mawashi uke if necessary. Or with the opening moves in the katas you mentioned. The discussion is ongoing as to what a Goju guy should look like in a fight and every guy will have a different answer, but it makes for stimulating conversation.

i think any systematic of rotating palms must feature forward and reverse movement in X,Y,Z axis and by mixing you´ll get diagonal lines, shearing, scooping, ....

I'm not sure I understand completely but think you are referring to Tensho kata and its characteristics?

@@GKCgoju well tensho is supposed to be connected to rokkushu, 6 rotating palms, being called palms is a little misleading because of the palms are attached via 2 joints to the body and connect via legs and feet to the planet, so what i meant is that every movement is circular in all three axis of space, basically i´m saying you are correct :)
