Insomnia vs. Sleep Apnea: What's the Difference?

I've always had a question for years. How does someone with severe insomnia get a sleep study if they can't fall asleep. You have to be asleep, to get the information. It seems like a waste of the facility's time and the insurance to show up and not be able to fall asleep and sit there in bed. Sleep medications like Ambien do not work for me.

I go back to Stanford sleep center next week . It is most likely I stop breathing that is why I wake up after few hours at 4 am
