I have a guilty pleasure for this movie. Mostly because I live in Pittsburgh and to this day I still call the PPG Building the “Inspector Gadget Building” or “Dr. Claw’s Building.” In fact when I was a toddler, my mom told me about how we walked past the movie set to get home and my dad got pictures of the gadget mobile when we were still living in the neighborhood where they shot the first scenes with the car.

It would've been better if Scolex was a henchman hired by Dr. Claw to masquerade as the evil mastermind. Dr. Claw could've helped Scolex lose weight in exchange for his services. Dr. Claw could then be revealed in a mid credits scene. It would've made Claw's recasting in the sequel make more sense.

Matthew Broderick is probably my least favorite actor. He's not the worst actor in the world, and he is most likely a nice person, but he looks so awkward in every film he's in. He was barely passable in Lion King.

An oldie but goldie! I know alot of people vibe with the sequel for this since it follows the show better but I actually like Broderick's take on Gadget over Stewart's Gadget as he ACTUALLY does detective and police work (he still retains his bumbling naivety though somewhat). And he was relentless on catching Claw in the end, I even love how he shows up and yelling for Claw's arrest for the 3rd time! Plus, even as a kid, I kinda got tired with Gadget being so clueless and just taking unknowingly the credit that Penny actually did the sleuthing. And I love the props by the late Stan Winston here!

Broderick vs. Stewart is an interesting debate, but overall the sequel is a better movie, partly because Penny basically had no characterization in the first film.

Honestly I liked both movies. They weren't a bad way to get introduced to the shoe. Plus the sequence where they're turning him into inspector gadget in the first movie I thought was cool as a kid. However I do prefer claw in the sequel mainly because of how the manage to hide his face.

1:45 speaking of the godzilla 1998 movie. In godzilla, mothra, king ghidorah: giant monster all out attack (2001), it starts off with a military briefing scene where soldiers are discussing about the history of godzilla and other kaijus appearing. They briefly mention the events of the godzilla 1998 that happened in new york. The camera cuts to two soliders talking to eachother wether that was really godzilla that attacked new york or not: Soldier one "The New York attack was Godzilla, right?" Solider two "That's what all the American experts claim, but our guys here have doubts." I did like this brief dialgoue because toho has retconing godzilla 98 film by confirming it was not godzilla that attacked new york in 1998 but a different monster.

Plus, Toho's Godzilla fought & quickly defeats Tristar's Godzilla aka "Zilla" (who replaced Gorosaurus) in *"GODZILLA: Final Wars".* Interestingly, Patrick Tatopoulos (the designer of Tristar's Godzilla) was thrilled to see his creation appear in a Toho film that he was not even fazed by its quick death.

15:27 I can see that. Infact I was directing this here's how I would've kept claws face hidden: When his hand gets crushed it should've been an over the shoulder shot from his perspective. That or its over head zoomed in shot of his hand just as its about to get crushed; and then it cuts to an exterior shot of him yelling my hand. And then when the claw is first seen every thing is shot at waist level from the hand's perspective. As for revealing that scolex and claw are the same person, the way it gets build up is by never showing scolex's hand and clever use of lighting.

The joke in this film that kills me is that failed 4th wall break. All they would have had to do was have Claw say his line, Gadget makes this face 😑 at the camera, and then have him switch back to telling Claw that he’ll never get away with this or something like that.

I was fortunate to find a copy of the cartoon volume 1 not too long ago this year. Partly got it mostly for Cree Summer as Penny, especially because I randomly found a copy of Inspector Gadget Saves Christmas on DVD several years back (Doug also reviwed that), because while it's not a great movie, it's honestly a piece of history and was cheap at the time (like, $2, I think). Good or bad, we'll have to wait for time to tell properly. Oddly, Don't have this movie. You'd think I would, but I don’t for whatever reason 🤷‍♀️

I didnt grew up watching the cartoon because most of my stuff early in life was DVDs & VHS Tapes because ofc mom raised me herself so not that much available nor good Internet and I therefore grew up with this and loved it as a kid, it's still pretty good if not still great and I saw Inspector Gadget 2 and I just...didnt like the look of it or the sets, also wasnt memorable but the first movie was & to extent cartoon with much footage as I saw online.

This is kinda a crazy idea I had. But what GENRE is this movie? It’s SUPPOSED TO BE Childfriendly-Nostalgia-FamilyFilm, after all if they could get 25% of the people who liked Gadget in the theaters, plus a few general audience movie fans… It could have been okay…. But it’s not A Nostalgia piece… because nothing is played straight according to the rules of the actual universe. Penny Does nothing and is only a damsel in distress. Brain (Almost wish I wrote Brian Griffin) is just there… to be there and is the wrong breed The Chief, actually looking the part, except being 50s-black haired-greying as opposed to late 40s Sandy blonde… has horrible comic relief and seems to be too dignified? The Mayor is unneeded in fact I think Doug cut her out of the review… Claw is not related at all And Gadget himself is not the Whimsical Don Adams-Max Smart Expy. Also the gadgets are both too mechanical and goofy… I believe… the end result…. If you look at the boy band songs…. The B plot turned A-plot which is the love story…. Not the Gadget vs Claw Vs Penny thing AND the ill-requested including for pg-adult jokes…. It’s a failed romantic comedy…. Where the romance is 60% of the plot and the comedy is 20% and the remaining is…. Filler…. I think they thought 4-quadrants Family Blockbuster so hard… this is closer to Mama Mia, than either inspector gadget…. Or die hard… It’s a shame.. its SO bad it’s… “bad movie-bad”… but could have been more.
